Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 7
SportingNonsense
The 2nd hill stage of the race and a lot of riders have plenty of motivation to gain time today. The race has hit Sweden and roads that will be familiar to PCT riders as the Husqvarna circuit is also used in the Scandinavia Open Road Race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-1.jpg

It's no advantage to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Puusepp, as Privatbank did not take part in that race, but still he has made it into a strong looking breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-2.jpg

We also have i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pineau, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Laengen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Albasini, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Kuznetsov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Terpstra, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Kinney, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Gallego Martin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Clement.

King of the Mountains leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Kuznetsov is clearly out to secure that classification, but he is beaten by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Clement at the first of 4 laps of the final Husqvarna circuit.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-3.jpg

With 38km to go, they hold a 2'50 lead on the peloton. The pace certainly seemed to surge in the peloton on the first climb, but Cancellara, Van Garderen and Schumacher are all comfortably at the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-4.jpg

On the 2nd lap of 4 Kuznetsov did manage to win the KoM climb, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert launches the first GC attack. He is 9th overall, and looking upwards.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-5.jpg

Schumacher and Cancellara follow, as do Claeys, Van der Hugenhaben, Bewley, Diggle, Sagan, Kwiatkowski, Reimer and a couple of others. Pressure on 1t4i and Rothaus!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-6.jpg

Posthuma and Boom both hold podium positions, and would like it to stay that way. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Van der Velde, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Sinkeldam - all in the Top 20 themselves - team up to counter the threats.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-7.jpg

But two so far avoid capture. It is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher. With 17km to go these two are just 1'20 off the break, while 30 seconds clear of the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-8.jpg

This is the 3rd lap now and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen quickly attacks to chase after Gilbert and Schumacher. The two National champions have now caught the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-9.jpg

More attacks from the peloton too, led by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-10.jpg

I did say that Schumacher and Gilbert had caught the break, well not quite all of them! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Puusepp leads onto the final lap. Closely followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pineau, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Kinney and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Laengen.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-11.jpg

They still hold 1 minute on the next group. Schumacher, Gilbert, Van Garderen and Pozzato are now together with other remnants of the early breakaway. Crucially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Albasini has waited for his team leader, and is now commiting himself for the cause.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png van der Hugenhaben attacked before the summit and is now looking to bridge across, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri also setting off on an adventure.

The peloton are over a minute behind Schumacher, Gilbert, Pozzato, and Van Garderen. No sign of Simply Red Bull, who may already have burned up all of their resources. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher is now up to a net 2nd overall, with Gilbert and Pozzato threatening to move up to the Top 6 too.

Panic stations for Rothaus clearly. Fortunately they have the strength of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Roux to work hard to reduce the deficit.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-13.jpg

Kinney, Puusepp and Pineau enter the final 5km, still leading, and as the final climb begins it is the American who makes the first move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-14.jpg

Laengen is caught by the chasers, who have been joined by van der Hugenhaben. The Dutchman is caught the wrong side of a split though, behind early breakaway riders. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato goes on the attack, seeking a killer blow for VolksWagen in the relegation fight.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys launches clear of the peloton now, and here goes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom chasing after him!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Cancellara is right there but cannot react. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley tries to follow but it is short lived.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-17.jpg

The stage fight seems to be going i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Kinney's way - he has opened up 40 seconds on Puusepp and Pineau - and the chasers are surprisingly making no gains.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-18.jpg

This is because rather than push on themselves, they are letting a tired i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Albasini do all the work, and Pozzato's attack was unable to stick.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom is starting to pull out a gap on a faltering peloton, already up to 35 seconds - he needs 30 more on Cancellara.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-20.jpg

But he hasnt been able to keep up with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys, the Belgian now part of the chase group ahead. He will have to do it all himself.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-21.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Kinney celebrates a well earned stage win, as Wikipedia fight back in the championship fight.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Puusepp and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pineau are the other breakaway survivors. A great result for PCT wildcard Privatbank, and more crucial points for VolksWagen.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-23.jpg

Now here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher taking 4th place, let the clock start as he bids to take the race lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-24.jpg

Pozzato, Van Garderen, Gilbert, Claeys and Albasini will all receive the same time, 55 seconds behind Kinney.

Now it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom, passing Laengen at the end. He is clocked at 1'34 after a fierce effort. It's enough to keep him ahead of Schumacher by 5 seconds, could it be the race lead?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-25.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Sagan is next, darting away from the peloton at 2'08.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-26.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Burghardt, of all people, leads in the peloton at 2'21, with Gusev, Kruijswijk and Posthuma close to the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-7-27.jpg

Cancellara will keep the race lead! He holds on by 18 seconds on Boom and 23 on Schumacher. If only Boom had managed to follow Claeys all the way up to Schumacher's group!

Posthuma slips to 4th at 48 seconds, while Gilbert and Pozzato now climb up to 5th and 6th respectively. Van Garderen manages to go up to 12th.

There were no further gaps down the field, so Sinkeldam hols on to his 16 second lead on Polnicky in the U25 competition. No points for Bewley today but he keeps his 3 point lead on Swift, while Kuznetsov consolidated his KoM lead - and that is sealed with only a TT to come.

Former teams classification Top 3 1t4i, Simply Red Bull and Becherovka all lost out today, and Pendleton's capitalise to take the lead - but only 20 seconds separates those 4 teams.
