Welcome to Philadelphia, USA, for a one-day flatish event. Today we have a circuit race ending in a hilly section, the Manayunk Wall, a 1km and 6.2% gradient slope, which maxes at 11%. We’re having 8 times of this. Let the fastest puncheur/ toughest sprinter/ gutsiest escapee win.
The break of the day forms quite early and peacefully. It consists of 7 men:
O’Shea
Oram
Robov
Putt
Kraft
Devine
Murphy
Their lead peaks at 6’30, at which point the peloton wakes up to do the required chasing. Amex, Venchi and Gazelle are the ones assuming the responsibility.
We cross through the finish line multiple times, which gives the riders the chance to profound their reconnaissance of the uphill section.
With 33km remaining Delgerbayar tries to agitate things. The front group is 1 min away at this point.
The Mongolian champion goes nowhere though. This move ignites further restlessness up front as the front men start inconsequently attacking each other
However we reach the last lap and the gap is still 1’21. But with 20km to go the odds aren’t in their favour.
Entering the last 10km the front group still has 30’’ on the bunch, and so Santambrogio tries to disturb things, with an attack of his own. He is followed by Wurf
The Italian catches and even distances the front group while Wurf just gets swallowed back.
Further ahead, as his companions are about to get caught, Murphy makes one last effort to make it to Santambrogio
Inside the last 5km this is the race situation:
As Murphy gets caught we see the first trains forming.
On the right it’s Venchi with
Dockx, Corti, Van Stayen, Steegmans and Vantomme
On the left it’s Amex with:
Selig, Grillo and Breschel
While Keough, Hoffman and Napolitano are yet to commit to one of these.
Santambrogio though is immune to all this frenzy and faces the final ramp with a 23’’ advantage, but there is still 1.5km to go!!
The peloton takes the final curve with the trains now in full swing. Amex has taken the front but Hoffman has caught Breschel’s wheel. Right after them comes Venchi with the prior configuration minus Dockx. Also in the mix are Bar, Briggs, Greipel, Goss and Haussler
Poor Santambrogio just doesn’t have any more in the tank and gets reeled in by a roaring pack led by Breschel. Hoffman is well positioned as well while Van Stayen couldn’t quite cash in on his team’s efforts
The final hill is over but there’s still nobody alongside Breschel!
And so the danish champion takes full honours here in Philadelphia!! Very well played by his team today, timing the capture of the final escapee to perfection while positioning their leader in a magnificent way. Congratulations.
Van Stayen still manages to steal 2nd place from Hoffman, while Steegmans finishes in a comfortable 4th
Behind them it’s much more tight, with the following riders completing the top10:
5th Ethan Weiss
6th André Greipel
7th Maxime Vantomme
8th Cameron Wurf
9th Jocelyn Bar
10th Matthew Goss
