Straight from the cobbles to the Ardennes, and a tough stage from Geleen to Flemalle.
So many KoM points on offer make featuring in the breakaway vital. Kuznetsov takes full advantage by winning the first 4 climbs. Also picking up points are Bagot and Edet.
Sanz completes the break but clearly didn't get the memo about chasing the KoM jersey. Insausti does score some minor points behind, but not at all enough to defend the jersey.
The action really kicks off with just under 50km to go. Sanchez Gil attacks the peloton. Diggle and Kwiatkowski decide to go too, and so does Roux.
Sanchez is solo for a while but then the other 3 catch him, and with 2 Rothaus riders at the fore they catch the breakaway. That's only a 1'10 advantage with 31km to go though.
Wikipedia were particularly astute to the threat and chasing, alongside Lotto for race leader Burghardt. Van Garderen now goes on the attack, with Burghardt attempting to follow!
There's a delay with no response and a slowing in the peloton. Flügel then launches, needing to respond to the Rothaus danger. van der Hugenhaben follows him, and a little later so does Gilbert. Bewley, Schumacher, Cancellara and Konovalovas also come up as attacking over the top of this climb.
Van Garderen has reached the front group. The break are gone now, so it is Kwiatkowski, Sanchez, Roux and Diggle with him.
Burghardt and 3 of the breakaway are at 30 seconds.
Gilbert, van der Hugenhaben and Flugel are at 1'10.
And there's a group of 7 now at 1'40: Schumacher, Konovalovas, Van der Velde, Cancellara, Kruijswijk, Boom and Bewley.
The rest of the peloton at 2 minutes. Representatives from VolksWagen, Tinkoff, Project 1t4i and Bouygues leading the chase.
Burghardt is really pushing hard here to reach the first group - could he even extend his race lead today?
Behind him are the strong trio of Van der Hugenhaben, Gilbert and Flugel, who should be able to work well together here.
Rothaus are really taking this stage by the scruff of the neck. Sanchez Gil instigates attacks from the whole first group just as Burghardt seemed to be closing in.
Gap extended, it's now Roux to go for it on the descent.
Here's the latest race situation. That Schumacher led group of 7 has now been swallowed up by the large peloton and trail by 2 minutes with 15km to go.
Gilbert leads his group of 3 with their eyes firmly set on closing down the gaps in front. They only have 16 seconds to Burghardt, but it is a whole minute to the leaders.
No shortage of attack attempts from the peloton on this downhill. Schumacher, Cancellara, Boom and Pozzato are all right amongt it, while Project 1t4i just focus on chasing.
The final climb summits with 12.5km to go, and Van Garderen is putting the hammer down - he has a lot of time to make up. The Rothaus duo are able to keep with him, but Diggle and Kwiatkowski are now dropped.
The gap to Gilbert, Flugel and van der Hugenhaben is holding firm at 1 minute, with Burghardt now amongst them. Just 30 seconds back to the peloton though, now being led by Schumacher.
Into the final 10km and the flat before the final uphill finish. Van Garderen realises that he has to do this by himself, with no help from the Rothaus duo - not even Roux is being used up to extend the gap. They have been on the move for 20km longer than Van Garderen, who is the stronger rider, so maybe it's all they can do to hold on now? Or maybe it is just tactics.
Diggle and Kwiatkowski are now 54 seconds down, with the main chasers at 1'08. VolksWagen are fighting back against Rothaus now as Pozzato has bridged across to the group!
They catch up with Diggle and Kwiatkowski but with 3km to go they are all but caught by the peloton. Swisscom have been chasing, but curiously so has Ballan! Will any other Rothaus rider try to get in on the action today?
The lead trio still have a lead of 1 minute, so as his group are caught Flügel attacks once again.
Van Garderen is clearly tiring now, but still no support from behind.
Flügel is flying. Can he do the unthinkable and storm past Rothaus for the stage win?
Final kilometre, and now, Sanchez Gil strikes!
Van Garderen has nothing left to sprint with, so it is going to be a stage win for Luis Leon Sanchez Gil! And make that a 1-2 for Rothaus as Roux just manages to squeeze past the American for 2nd place.
Flügel takes 4th place, 29 seconds down.
And in at 53 seconds is the peloton, Sagan,
Costa and Claeys leading the way.
After such an action packed stage, it feels somewhat odd that 100 riders are credited as finishing within 1 minute of the front, but that is what has happened.
So Burghardt will keep his lead going into the first time trial, with 1'35 on Bewley, 1'43 on Pozzato and 1'47 on Boom. 13 riders lie on 1'55 - which is down from the 17 at the start of the day. Leading U25 riders Senechal and Teunissen lost time, as did Cominelli and Broers. Van Garderen moves up to 18th, 3'17 down. LL Sanchez now 19th at 3'42 - and the Spaniard can time trial well - and could be in reach of the weaker time triallists of the 5th-17th group.
Bewley keeps his points lead, with Pozzato the closest rival. Kuznetsov is the KoM leader with 64, ehead of Bagot on 58 and Edet on 52. Rothaus pair Sanchez and Roux are next in the standings. Polnicky is now the lead U25 rider but neither he nor closest rival Sinkeldam will enjoy the time trial.
