Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Stage 2 is from Tienen to Tilloy-Lez-Marchiennes, and most importantly features cobbles!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-1.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Insausti is back in the break and wins the only KoM sprint. He isn't the only decent cobbled rider in the break, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Senechal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Teunissen in there too. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Navardauskas completed the breakaway, but quickly fell away when the cobbles began.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-2.jpg

In the peloton i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley are straight to the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-3.jpg

And it absolutely rips apart. A few riders make the first group but immediately sit up to wait for team leaders - including i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Vanmarcke, Nooytens, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rowe, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Verbist and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Drucker.

A group of just 23 forms. Key names in here include Bewley, Cancellara, Burghardt, Boom, Gusev, Pozzato, Boonen, Summerhill, Gilbert, Sinkeldam, Kruijswijk, Schumacher, Kluge, Van der Velde, Roelandts, Ballan and Stybar.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-4.jpg

Just behind Wikipedia are Project 1t4i are pushing a chasing group along in a bid to catch up. For Wikipedia, Eeckhout and Flaksis want to bring i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen back up to join Gilbert and Schumacher as the leading puncheurs. Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Sinkeldam and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Broers are riding for their time triallist leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Posthuma. The Privatbank rider is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Vaitkus.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-5.jpg

Now 1'30 down is the group led by Vanspeybrouck, Vanmarcke, Nooytens and Van Keirsbulck. The main cause of the wait is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png van der Hugenhaben and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-6.jpg

They've also collected i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Cornu, who teammate Vanspeybrouck has initially dropped behind when waiting for their Dutch leader. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Konovalovas, Van Heerden, Swift, Nolf, Claeys and Sagan are also in this stretched group.

Further behind Good Energy's strong trio of Brits i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Blythe, Fenn and Rowe have bizarrely waited for Guarnieri. The next group after that includes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa. Prio-Porto had actually relayed the peloton for a lot of the non-cobbled sections earlier in the day. Whatever they were planning, it hasn't worked.

Back to the front of the race, the remaining break of 3 still lead by 1'30. But the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Project 1t4i unit of Sinkeldam, Broers and Poosthuma have now reconnected with Van der Velde, Leezer and the rest of the remaining peloton. Sinkeldam and Broers are their best cobbled riders and they now hit the front of the group to close that breakaway gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen could not keep up and now trails by 50 seconds, and now i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher is having to really battle to stay in contact too. He could be the favourite for victory were he manage to hold on.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-8.jpg

Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Burghardt has attacked! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Ballan tried to follow but couldn't match the German, who reaches the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-9.jpg

12 km to go and they are 50 seconds clear of the peloton.

On the next cobbles i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Summerhill attacks.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-10.jpg

Burghardt blasted the breakaway out of his wheels, as the American now tries to reach him.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-11.jpg

They link up and their lead starts to climb rapidly.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-12.jpg

It goes over 1'30 with 5km still to go as only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Polnicky relays for the peloton. Why aren't Bewley, Boonen or Cancellara reacting?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev does finally attack!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-14.jpg

This leads to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Sinkeldam finding one last effort to bring him back, but immediately i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom counters, which only Gusev tries to follow.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-15.jpg

At the front Summerhill and Burghardt have reached the final kilometre. Burghardt is heading for the race lead after the American crashed yesterday, but it looks like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Summerhill might win the stage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-16.jpg

But Burghardt is fighting back!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-17.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Marcus Burghardt wins the stage!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-18.jpg

And now the clock starts.

Bewley, Cancellara, Pozzato and Roelandts are all just sat there behind Sinkeldam, watching and doing nothing.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-19.jpg

Finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley tries something with 1km to go, on what has been a disappointingly tame defense of his race lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-20.jpg

It's too late for 3rd place though, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom holds on ahead of Gusev.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-21.jpg

The gap for this peloton of 27 to Summerhill and Burghardt is 1'35. The top puncheurs in here are Schumacher, Gilbert and Pozzato, while the best time triallists are Cancellara, Posthuma and Boom.

Van Garderen did his best, but despite being shepherded by the support of Eeckhout and Flaksis, he finishes at 3'58 with a tougher task ahead on the hills.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-22.jpg

Not far behind, Vanmarcke and Vanspeybrouck lead in their group at 4'35. Cornu, Van den Broeck, Sanchez and Konovalovas are all in here.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-2-23.jpg

The Good Energy team finished at 6'50, with Costa in at 8'16. Many strong puncheurs had their GC hopes wiped out altogether, most notably Flugel at 12'27.

Bewley maintains lead of the Points jersey, while Insausti extended his KoM lead. The Spaniard, along with Teunissen and Senechal, survived in the peloton to the end of the stage. The latter two lost no time yesterday, unlike Insausti, and thanks to time bonuses gained on the stage now hold the top two U25 positions - Senechal infront of Teunissen. Polnicky and Sinkeldam were the only other young riders to make the selection. 4 teams managed to get 3 riders into that group.
