A flat stage, featuring a loop around Helmet to make for a 245km road race today! With those short climb given a HC-rating, the battle for KoM may be well on today.
As for the win, we may expect the sprinters to deliver yet again: Thorsen (though fearing those climbs), Drujon, Mezgec, Manarelli or Sweeting may be the favorites, while Andriato struggled most recently.
We see indeed two riders in the breakaway, who could be aiming for the KoM-lead (Eastman/79pts) today:
Fritsch (48pts)
Zaini (26pts)
Craddock
are allowed to build a gap up to 10 minutes in the first half of this long day..
Zaini would pretty dominate those three mountain sprints, but Fritsch grabs good points as second placed in all of those contests.. Zaini though also attacks his breakaway companions for solo-effort with still 80km and no more mountain sprint remaining!
It ain't the KoM-lead for neither Zaini nor Fritsch though, as Boaro (2nd in KoM prior to the stage, 75pts) kept collecting the remaining points on each contest:
KoM-competition Boaro 95 Fritsch 90 Zaini 86
The peloton, by the way, won't give up on the stage that easy and narrowed the gap back to less than 6 minutes in the meantime..
..and so it may become yet another empty-handed escape by Zaini, who's already soon to be caught by the peloton with about 10km remaining!
Yap, he's chanceless, as the sprinter teams like Kazzinc, Magna and Bonsucro once again managed to control a breakaway in those flat stages here:
Danacik Lee Mezgec Stroetinga Nateghi Txurruka Sweeting Aguilar Haddou Manarelli Andriato Ewan De Ketele Pauwels Speirs Drujon Gaimon Robov Haga
Should be worth a mention, that Thorsen won't be factor today, as those riders at the very front already established a small gap on the further riders in the bunch!
Bonsucro's train closing up to Kazzinc a few moments later, while there's a lot of movement on the positions behind those two trains:
Haddou/De Ketele/Andriato going from left to right..
Mezgec kicks off his sprint prior to the flamme rouge, with Stroetinga, Nateghi and Sweeting right behind..
..also Bonsucro's train now moving from right to left, while Drujon kicks off his sprint from a bit behind.. Andriato and Ewan struggling to keep up..
Mezgec still in the lead with now Sweeting and Nateghi easily dropping Stroetinga, who will again fade late into a sprint!
Manarelli yet again with a late, but strong kick, while Drujon may not be amongst the very best today..
This will be a tight sprint, as Sweeting tries to move past Mezgec with the line approaching.. Manarelli with the better spped, flying past Nateghi, but a quite a bike length behind..
..and therefore too late to beat Sweeting, who goes for his second stage-win here! Manarelli 2nd ahead of Mezgec, Nateghi and Drujon..
It might not be too visible on this screen, but this leading group actually opened up a quite huge gap on the bunch, which may be good news for Txurruka (GC's 11th) and Haga (7th) in particular!
And yes, there are gaps today and we see yet another major split, with a group of just 10 riders crossing the line next:
+ 54" for most of the GC's Top-10 like Kashechkin, Eastman, Rohregger or Doi, who all did rather well to be at the very front and not lose more time!
Opposing to at least two other riders:
+ 2'02" for Rodas (GC's 4th) and Stetina (12th)! A rather stupid minutes-loss against group Kashechkin and even worse, two minutes on Haga/Txurruka!
And so we see some unexpected minor movements inside the GC's Top-10 today:
Rodas loses a bit of ground to maintain his 4th with now just a few seconds on Dyball and Haga, as the latter jumped from 7th to 6th today! Txurruka with a jump onto 9th, so Bonsucro with some good stages most recently!
Boaro as the new KoM-leader, while Kashechkin holds on to his points-lead..
