The tour is heading for San Diego today and it's a short (149km) and almost panflat profile to take some kind of a rest prior to tomorrow's queen stage.
The sprinter teams delivered so far and so we should expect another bunch sprint: Ewan took his first win yesterday, while Drujon and Mezgec looked strong, too. Manarelli, Andriato and Kankovsky/Thorsen may be in the mix as well though.
Meiji's DS might have had some serious talks with Zaini, who's joining the breakaway again: accompanied by Davila and Fritsch, there's no threat for the GC and therefore just hoping to go for line honours at the end..
We've already seen those teams sharing the work on the chase: Kazzinc, BelarusBank, Magna and Repsol look set to pull the break of the day back.
45km before finish, the peloton narrows the gap back to 2'40"..
..and 36" with now 6.5km remaining!
The escaping trio puts up a huge fight, but it might just end as it did yesterday, when the breakaway was caught right in the middle of the sprint..
..not quite yet, but as the sprinter teams set up their trains, the gap is narrowed to just 15" and the pace is definitely on the bunch's side:
Clarke Kankovsky Thorsen Stroetinga Boaro Pereira Lee Hrinkow Mezgec Racault Aguilar Sweeting Speirs Manarelli Nielsen Drujon Ewan Kashechkin Haddou Van Zandbeek
Like yesterday, Andriato ain't to be found at the front early into the sprint. He seems to have suffered the most on the previous days..
BelarusBank though perform like they did in the first week, as Clarke set up a nice leadout to pull Kankovsky/Thorsen and Stroetinga to a nice position with the kite approaching!
Mezgec/Manarelli and Drujon two bike lengths in arrears.. Ewan not yet as fast as yesterday, while Nateghi is popping up now..
Those names won't be much of a factor today though: Kankovsky/Thorsen with a nice advantage under the kite, as Stroetinga fades..
Moving forward with better speed now: Drujon, Mezgec, Manarelli, Sweeting!
They all won't stand a chance against Thorsen, who's going strong towards his third stage-win here!
It will be a thrilling fight for the runner-up though: Manarelli, Drujon, Mezgec and Sweeting head-to-head..
..and while Thorsen bounces back in style from yesterday's no-showing..
..it's Mezgec and Drujon completing the podium ahead of Manarelli and Sweeting! Drujon as the most consistent sprinter in the previous week and therefore new 2nd in the points-competition.
Luckily, there were no accidents today and also Eastman looked okay today. So the biggest news is this pure sprinter from Australia continuing to deliver big time for his team! If you had told me such a scenario prior to the race, I would have bet all my money against you. No offense.
