The Tour of America is heading for Hollywood, where this 146km hilly stage may be more interesting as for GC than yesterday's.. a steady up and down and some short, but challenging climbs all over the place!
Eastman vs Kashechkin, as always? Or will top-puncheur Zaini finally deliver? Or will we just see a breakaway telling the story like yesterday?
The break of the day is quickly found again: Boaro, Fritsch, Davila and Klimiankou!
Davila as best-placed in GC (+ 35.37) and Klimiankou (14pts) as the most dangerous threat for KoM-leader Rousseau (67pts)..
Heineken won't just give up on the stage like they did yesterday: the team keeps the gap to the breakaway about 4 minutes for most of the time, eventually narrowing this disadvantage to 3 minutes with now 37km to go.
Here's where we see the first attacks in the bunch: Shimizu (GC's 14th) and also Kashechkin give it a go! Eastman though jumps behind quickly.
And looks in control so far: while Shimizu managed to open up a gap, trying to bridge across the breakaway, the peloton is alltogether again 30km before finish. No luck for Kashechkin yet.
The race settled down until the final climb, where we see some more movements back in the bunch. But first, Boaro drops his breakaway companions, where Shimizu finally caught up.
The Italian enters the final 12km with a 1'35"-advantage on the peloton, which goes more and more into pieces.. with the final mountain sprint done, Rousseau will love to see that he "survived" this stage again:
KoM-competition Rousseau 67 Klimiankou 62 Bazhkou 60
A small group with most of the GC-contenders established a gap on the peloton and at the hilltop, we see Kashechkin going for his second attack today!
He's following a strong move by Gaimon, while also Pozzo tries to join him! Will the Kazakh (+ 1.42 in GC) gain back some time on Eastman here?
Well, ain't looking too bad, actually: Kashechkin opened up a 1-minute-gap on group Eastman with now 5km to go for him!
Gaimon another 13" ahead, yet trying to join the early escapees, who struggle to follow Boaro though!
And yes, Boaro takes the stage thanks to his well-timed attack on the final hilltop!
+ 50" and 2nd place for Klimiankou, who may be a KoM-contender from now on..
+ 1'21" for Gaimon and Kashechkin, who caught up to the remaining early escapees!
A strong showing by both, while especially Kashechkin definitely gained some very valuable seconds on Eastman that way..
+ 2'13" for Eastman and his group of 16 riders!
Quite a loss, but enough to defend his GC-lead. Kashechkin though bounced back from his losses against Eastman in the mountains to narrow the gap back to 50".. Rohregger keeps his 3rd ahead of Pozzo, Doi, Rodas and Di Gregorio, while Stetina drops down to 9th place thanks to finishing in a next group behind Eastman today.
Tomorrow's 50km ITT will definitely shake things up again, so if this stage today was a sign of strength from Kashechkin, Eastman may already fear tomorrow's tough challenge!
