Second consecutive mountain stage, which comes rather short (130km), but features a longer summit finish than yesterday. The climb up "Mosquito Flat" though ain't that steep.
Anyway, Kashechkin looked strong yesterday and slipped into yellow by just 12" on Eastman, as those two appear to be the strongest as expected.
It took quite a while for a first group of 3 riders finally allowed to go clear, as several earlier attempts were shut down by the peloton immediately:
Montenegro, Camargo and former race-leader Danacik now go for a mid-race breakaway with just 64km remaining. Danacik (+ 5'39" as 15th in GC) of course as the best placed rider of those three..
He also adds a few more points to the mountain classification, even though he did not really contest for the two sprints the group went for:
KoM-competition Rousseau 67 Stoenchev 48 Danacik 42
The peloton looks also still in control, narrowing the gap back to 2'20" with about 33km remaining. Several teams like Boeing and Mobil in particular do not want to let Danacik go for a succesful breakaway again..
And so those three escapees are soon to be caught by the bunch with now just 11km to go, where we also see the first notable attack:
Eastman goes, putting the well needed pressure on Kashechkin that way!
The breakaway is chanceless and swallowed by this remaining bunch (25 riders) soon, while Eastman opened up a 45"-gap at the 5km mark!
The pace is moderate, but it's still an elimination race in this elite group behind Eastman. Most notable names being dropped so far:
Gaimon
Hudecek
Sequera
Zaini
4km to go and now goes Kashechkin, soloing away from the first group and facing a 50"-gap on Eastman! It's definitely a chance for the US boy to slip back into yellow!
No one else is able to follow, so it's all about the fight between Eastman and Kashechkin today: 41" advantage for Eastman with less than a kilometre to go, so the virtual new leader at this point!
The group behind gets smaller as Vasquez/Torres, Tsikhanau and Peterson can't follow anymore..
Eastman bounces back from his losses on the previews few days and takes this stage solo! A strong early attack and in addition to bonus seconds, also a notable gap on Kashechkin..
+ 43" for Kashechkin, who might have underestimated that attack!
+ 1'48" for an 18-men-group with Rodas, Rohregger and Txurruka completing the Top-5 today!
+ 2'18" for Danacik
+ 2'43" for a group with Vasquez
+ 5'35" for a next group with Gaimon
Eastman re-takes the GC-lead with Kashechkin now 39" down on the top-favorite. With Doi already being 3'42" down as 3rd, it's more and more clear, that we will see the expected 2-men-battle for the overall victory here.
Just minor changes behind those two, but Rodas (4th) keeps to impresse for the CT-team.. Kashechkin, despite losing yellow for now, at least grabs the points-lead (77pts), with Thorsen (70) and Andriato (70) chanceless to score major points on those stages.
