The first week concludes with another flat, but challenging stage - and we're again heading for San Francisco and it's famous steep roads! 157km in total, the profile features several short climbs and will hurt pure sprinters' legs for sure.
It's therefore not a stage made for double stage-winner Thorsen, while sprinters like Drujon, Andriato, Mezgec or local hero Sweeting may hope for a victory today..
And of course it's a nice opportunity to contest for the KoM-classification with nine mountain sprints today:
Rousseau (19pts) clearly will have this ambition today, as he's part of a 2-men-breakaway accompanied by Stoenchev (both lost more than 7 minutes in the GC so far).. the first four early sprints see Rousseau already closing up to mountain-leader Crane..
KoM-competition Crane 41 Rousseau 38 Danacik 31
We're already jumping into the final 45km of the stage, where the peloton - led by the usual sprinter teams - narrowed the gap back to 1'54" in the meantime.
Thorsen takes the remaining 2pts in today's only intermediate sprint to go for a tied lead in the points-classification:
Points-competition Thorsen 70 Andriato 70 Drujon 68
The escaping duo reaches the challenging up-and-down-final with still a small advantage on the bunch and so Rousseau finally took the lead in the KoM-rankings with three more sprints contested.
He's dropped by Stoenchev 17km before finish though, so the Bulgarian will go for a late solo-attempt with the peloton a minute in arrears!
It's going to be close for sure: Stoenchev keeps fighting his way to the finish and climbs the last ascend in San Francisco with a 50"-gap on the bunch, which is soon to swallow Rousseau!
KoM-competition Rousseau 67 Stoenchev 48 Crane
So at least one nice achievement for Rousseau today, while Stoenchev still can hope to hold off the bunch til the finish..
A few moments later, we see a first serious attack out of the peloton: Pozzo (GC's 9th) goes on that final climb, trying to bridge across Stoenchev!
Also Kashechkin launches a move, jumping behind Pozzo to establish a small gap quickly! His great ride yesterday already proved his good shape, so this may be a dangerous attempt, too..
The flat finish though will make it a tough challenge to hold off the 51-men-peloton: while Stoenchev keeps fighting to maintain a 30"-gap on Kashechkin/Pozzo, the bunch is just a few seconds behind the chasing duo with still a few sprinters left in the mix.
Most notable names being dropped: Thorsen/Tshikanau, Haddou, Stroetinga and Vasquez/Torres! No real surprise to see those sprinters dropped, while GC-contenders like Vasquez clearly lacked the hill-skills today..
We're coming closer to the final km and Kashechkin/Pozzo are swallowed by the sprinting bunch now:
Sweeting, Drujon, Manarelli amongst those at the very front of the group, with Sweeting as the fastest at this point!
And he flies past Kasheckin to almost catching up to Stoenchev under already under the kite! Some tremendous speed!
A few metres behind, De Ketele, Ewan and Gaimon with some good speed now, too. While Drujon can't keep up and suffers big time now. Same goes for Manarelli!
Sweeting though keeps pacing and flies past Stoenchev, who has nothing to counter here.. De Ketele/Ewan won't fight for the win, but now face some more riders moving forward from behind..
Sweeting with a dominating win in a stage, that he certainly had aimed for prior to this race. Kicking his sprint early wasn't any issue today, a well played move..
It's a tight sprint for the runner-up eventually, but De Ketele managed to hold off an extraordinary fast finishing Briceno to take this 2nd place today.
Gaimon/Di Gregorio round up a great stage for their teams, while young gun Ewan completes the Top-5 ahead of Kashechkin and GC-leader Danacik. So no notable changes in the GC today, which is likely to change tomorrow, where the first mountain stage awaits the peloton!
