Next flat stage on the menu, but it's by far the most challenging so far: featuring two rather short, but steep climbs (with the second close to the finish), pure sprinters may fear being dropped or losing much energy to survive at the very front. The 200km in total make for an even more tricky route here.
So it will be interesting to see, if double stage-winner Thorsen will be a factor again.. other sprinters like Drujon, Andriato or Mezgec may fancy their chances today, while also puncheurs may give it a try.
The break of the day with three riders establishes a comfortable gap quickly: KoM-leader Crane again manages to join the break, aiming to add more points (11pts so far). But also Donald (9pts) and Rousseau (3pts) could well slip into the polka dot today.
Anyway, with now (92km to go) three mountain sprints being contested - and Crane taking out two of them - it's looking good for him to defend his jersey today:
KoM-competition Crane 31 Donald 21 Rousseau 19
Still one Cat2-climb to come though..
It's some tough conditions today with a lot of rain and notable crosswinds up to 30kmh:
the peloton - led by Bonsucro, Kazzinc, Heineken, Belarusbank and Magna - is of course on the chase with now 58km remaining and the gap down to 3'45"..
It may become a close one for the bunch and their way to pull those escapees back: 26km before finish, the leading trio enters the final climb (about 4km length) with still a 1'50"-advantage on the peloton!
Crane keeps being the strongest in this group to also take out this final sprint and also dropping his former breakaway companions easily!
KoM-competition Crane 41 Donald 21 Rousseau 19
23km to go for him, and he's now leading solo by 1'30" on the peloton!
We take a look back at the bunch and we notice a major split! The climb apparently made a whole lot of riders suffer and 22 riders went clear at the hilltop:
Peterson, English, Stetina, Eastman
Drujon, Rohregger, Racault, Ticona, Pauwels
Mezgec, Agudelo, Boaro, Pozzo
Shimizu, Doi
Kashechkin, Andriato, Milan
Di Gregorio, Rodas
Txurruka
Dyball
So quite an interesting mix of GC-contenders and top-sprinters, who obviously were smart (and strong) enough to be at the front of the bunch there.. apart from less strong climbing sprinters like Thorsen, also some GC-contenders now fear to lose time today, as the bigger peloton is already down by 47" on this new chasing group:
Haga, Montenegro
Sarmiento
Vasquez
Also puncheurs like Zaini or Gaimon clearly didn't pay enough attention here..
This may be all good news for Crane, who enters the final 5km with still a 46"-gap on the chasing group.. will he maintain his gap til the end?
Kazzinc is leading this group for Mezgec, as also Andriato and Drujon move forward to soon kick off the sprint.
More important for the GC-fight: the dropped peloton is still down by more than 40 seconds with now 4km remaining. This is likely to be a gap at the finish, too!
And it's also clear, that Crane will win this stage: Mezgec kicks off his sprint under the kite, with Drujon, Andriato and also Eastman and Kashechkin right at the front of this group..
..in the meantime, Crane celebrates a nice stage-win, as well as his still lasting KoM-lead! Well played.
+ 28" for the chasing group, where Drujon and Andriato grab the remaining bonus seconds ahead of Mezgec and Rohregger.. that's the points-lead for Andriato, as Thorsen of course didn't score any points today.
+ 2'13" for the bigger bunch with the already mentioned names! So this group actually lost quite some ground on the final kilometres. Not the best news for those GC-contenders being caught behind in this split today..
As for the GC, Eastman of course did enough to defend his lead ahead of teammate Peterson and Drujon, who moved up to 3rd today. Mezgec and Stetina round up the provisional Top-5. Tomorrow's first hilly rated stage will be another test for the GC-favorites, while those sprinters may suffer for the first time here..
