Game plays slow and responsive as if laptop is unplugged

Hi,

My laptop has been whirring more loudly than usual for about the last week or so when I play PCM. A bit earlier today, while playing the Dutch ITT championships in custom career mode, I noticed PCM was very, very sluggish and slow to respond, in the same way it would react if I had unplugged the laptop - perhaps even a little worse than that. However, the laptop is not unplugged, does not suffer from issues relating to the battery, and I tried another lead and the game was still very, very slow.

I turned the computer off and on again, and the game is still very, very slow. Videos seem to work fine, other games, including more heavy-duty ones than PCM, seem to be working much better although not perfectly. For reference my computer uses NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

I have now noticed my laptop is silent while attempting to play PCM or another game - which probably hasn't been the case since the week I bought the laptop. If something has gone badly wrong internally, what could it be and why would it affect PCM so badly?

Not intended as a bump but the game seems to work in another room - I guess it's not a PCM/gaming issue.
