Tour of America - Stage 3

Third consecutive flat stage and we are heading for Sacramento, where also tomorrow's long TTT will be held: today, it's 195km in total, featuring a climb halfway through the race.

Still a mostly flat stage and so the sprinters will go for line honours, most probably: Thorsen still leading the GC, but especially Andriato, Mezgec and Drujon looked quite strong yesterday.

i.imgur.com/kboO9LV.jpg

The first 3 riders to go clear are allowed to go for the break of the day: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Wolf, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Donald.

Fritsch as the best-placed in GC with + 1.30 on Thorsen, while his companions are already down by more than 4 minutes there..

i.imgur.com/e8B1TAN.jpg

Fritsch is the first to be dropped though, as he couldn't follow Donald and Wolf when they sprinted for today's second mountain sprint:

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Crane 11 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Donald 9 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Fritsch 8

So Crane will remain the mountain-leader thanks to Donald (1pt prior to the stage) not taking maximum points today!

i.imgur.com/49p16j1.jpg

The two remaining escapees enter the final 50km with about 2 minutes ahead of the bunch, where Thorsen sprinted for the remaining point at today's only intermediate.

The biggest news though happens just a few moments later and we're sorry to not provide a picture of it: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Nicácio suddenly stopped and jumped into his team car to quit this race already on third day! Being listed as one of the serious GC-contenders, this is horrible news for Bonsucro. He wasn't in any accident, so he must have just suffered a different kind of injury during this stage. Tough luck and something we really didn't wanted to happen. Bonsucro will for sure have a lot of things to talk about tonight..

i.imgur.com/y0KdsPi.jpg

Back to actual racing though: the escaping duo fights to hold off the bunch, where the sprinter teams once again look set to swallow the breakaway right in time..

i.imgur.com/HdKl2QX.jpg

..yes, they do. No luck for the escapees and the trains are set up to enter the final 3km for yet another bunch sprint:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Clarke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Kankovsky
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Thorsen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Andriatoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Speirs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Pereirai439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Drujon
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Aguilari439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Stroetinga
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Manarellii439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Sweeting
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Nateghi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Ewan

Business as usual with Belarusbank proving to have an early strong train.. Bonsucro setting up a train this time, willing to shake off the Nicácio-shock.. most notable name missing this early action: Mezgec!

i.imgur.com/g734EvN.jpg

Still no sign of yesterday's runner-up to be a factor today, now that we enter the final 2km:

Kankovsky taking over the final leadout now, with Magna still hanging on, but Bonsucro's train falling a few more metres behind.

Catching up to Ewan are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Gaimon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Haddou and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Nielsen..

i.imgur.com/xF5PMUf.jpg

There's a clear gap behind Belarusbank's and Magna's train with the flamme rouge approaching!

Kankovsky/Thorsen/Andriato still going strong, Speirs/Drujon/Stroetinga/Sweeting still trying to hang on..

Aguilar/Manarelli/Nateghi/Ewan already quite a gap behind, which might be too much to make up for..

i.imgur.com/zbBpmzb.jpg

Also Magna's duo more and more in trouble to keep up with Kankovsky's pace here! Thorsen still behind his teammate, as Andriato now kicks off his sprint to move forward!

i.imgur.com/rJbpsMg.jpg

This will go to either Thorsen or Andriato, with the Australian finally leaving Kankovsky's wheel to go head-to-head with yesterday's stage-winner!

Drujon/Sweeting/Stroetinga might have a chance to fight for the final podium spot, while Manarelli or Nateghi are further metres behind..

i.imgur.com/5g1UOiM.jpg

Thorsen with a small advantage over Andriato with the line coming closer..

i.imgur.com/CQXB9ue.jpg

..and he takes his second stage-win here: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Thorsen once again benefits from a great leadout by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Kankovsky, who also managed to finish 3rd today! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Andriato runner-up today, as those two appear to be the strongest sprinters here so far.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Drujon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Stroetinga round up the Top-5, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Mezgec has to settle for a disappointing 14th place today.

GC-wise, Thorsen of course grows his lead back to 14" over Andriato and 30" on Manarelli. A frustrating stage for the South American team to lose i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Nicácio that way... tomorrow's TTT will for sure mix the whole GC, but it will be interesting to see, how those 13 riders with up to 1'52" of advantage on some GC-contenders will end up there.
