Deutschland Tour - Stage 1
Selwink
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2321.jpg

As already announced, the 2014 Deutschland Tour starts with a sprint stage. Favourites therefore are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati.

Not all riders seem to be looking forward to racing today, as the sky is very grey and it looks like it may start raining any time.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2329.jpg

It takes a very long while before someone attacks, but after 10km Spanish cobbler i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Insausti attacks.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2330.jpg

When he's reached by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Viennet, it starts raining. Nevertheless, the duo is quickly allowed to gain and soon the lead exceeds a minute.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2331.jpg

One more person is bothered to attack, and it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev who completes today's break.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2332.jpg

By the time the group of 3 reaches the intermediate sprint, which is won by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Insausti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Viennet the lead already reaches the 4m30.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2333.jpg

In the pack the GC teams and sprinter teams share the work, but for now it's mainly Phinney's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Wikipedia that helps out with large parts of the chase.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2334.jpg

At the Lebach, the first of two categorized climbs today, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev once again wins. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Viennet comes 2nd this time. The lead has grown to 7 minutes already, but there are still 118kms left to ride.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2335.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Insausti realizes his weakness and exhaust after the climb and doesn't attempt to catch up with the two others. He drops back to the pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2336.jpg

When he is caught by the pack, which by now is currently lead by sprinter teams only, the finish line is 100km away and the two leaders have a gap left of 6m40.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2337.jpg

At today's 2nd and final categorized climb i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Viennet beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev, which gives us the interesting situation of equal points. When 5 minutes later i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png El Fares crosses the summit as third, the verdict is given. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Viennet is given the mountain's jersey for tomorrow and the day after.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2338.jpg

While i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev wins the second sprint as well, the sprinters are preparing for the intermediate to test their legs. In the end only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Avelino could break out of the pack and actually sprint though. He thus comes third.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2339.jpg

For today's final sprint, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Vorobev once again wins and adds his total of bonification seconds up to 18, the sprinters are trying to redeem themselves. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek positions himself best and after getting a large gap the others give up their efforts quickly. The lead for the break, 35km from the line, is 2m45.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2340.jpg

The pack has worked hard and with 20km to go the gap for the duo up front is down to 1m20.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2341.jpg

With 16km to go the leaders collapse and two kilometers later their adventure ends. The pack is now grouped up and preparing for the mass sprint.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2342.jpg

With 12km to go the inevitable happens: a crash! Only 7 riders are taken down, but among them is outsider i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Keukeleire. His situation is not as bad as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png De Gendt's, as the Belgian has to abandon. The other riders down are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Wiggins, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Durbridge, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Gonzalez Salas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Morabito and possible top-10 candidate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2343.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Good Energy realizes its leader is down and immediately 4 riders drop back, hoping to bring him back but probably to limit his losses.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2344.jpg

When going into the last lap, 7km from the line, we see a surprising image: record winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Fothen is leading the pack, to support his sprinter Avelino.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2345.jpg

With 4km to go we see the sprint trains clearly forming, and so far i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Prio - Porto has the strongest.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2346.jpg

This train seems to collapse a bit and the others take over. With 3km to go this is the situation:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Terpstra
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Reijneni439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Avelinoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Tzortzakisi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Von Hoff
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Giauxi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Cioleki439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Impey
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Reimer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Zabel
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2347.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Giaux does an incredible job for Ciolek and with 2kms to go he not only manages to get him next to the other sprinters, but also has the highest speed and the inner curve.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2348.jpg

Just 400m later hell breaks loose! While i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek handled his corner well, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Reimer did not! He goes down, and takes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Zabel with him.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2349.jpg

Up front the sprinters launch with 1.5-1km to go.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2350.jpg

At the crash scene more news reaches us, and this time it's big again! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Phinney is down!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2351.jpg

Up front we get the expected battle of the three. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek takes the lead, followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs. Interestingly, it's Mohs who has the highest speed of the three, and Ciolek the lowest.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2352.jpg

The gaps are getting smaller and smaller, but with 500m to go we still have the same order.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2353.jpg

However, just 100m later i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs overtakes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati. He has one more rider to overtake now, but it seems likely we'll have a German winner today at least.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2354.jpg

The gap is getting smaller and smaller, but so is the distance to the line. With 100m to go it's still i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek in the lead though.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2355.jpg

And at the line it's
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2356.jpg
a very close gap! The photo finish shows us that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek wins though! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs comes 2nd, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati.

Far behind that we find i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Impey taking fourth, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Tzortzakis. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Avelino comes 6th. Also interesting is two GC contenders in the top-10 today already.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2357.jpg

In the back of the pack we find our crash victims. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Phinney can start tomorrow's team time trial without time losses. Whether he's injured we'll see in the coming stages though.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/MG%20Reports/PCM2358.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Good Energy did everything it could, but Faiers loses 5 minutes and seems eliminated for a good classification.
