Next flat stage, this time a panflat 166km point to point race from Chico to Yuba City.
Thorsen took out a narrow win over Drujon in the opener and looking at his team's strength yesterday, we may expect him to be in the mix again!
Yesterday's solo-escapee and KoM-leader Crane managed to join today's break of the day, too. He's accompanied by English, Donald and Rousseau.
The latter would take the only intermediate sprint ahead of English and Crane to score some bonifications. None of those lost time yesterday, by the way.
Opposing to yesterday, we do have heavy crosswinds today: the wind blows at 46kmh and the peloton is already quite stretched with teams like Belarusbank and Magna chasing the breakaway group.
48km before finish, the escapees hold on to a 1'40"-gap and are likely to face a tough challenge for the remaining kilometres..
..indeed too tough to survive: the peloton is control again and reeled the group in already 14km before finish! Bonsucro, Magna and Belarusbank as those teams, who did most of the work today.
The wind is still blowing and it ain't no real surprise to see a rather less organized bunch sprint now. Belarusbank though again set up a train for Thorsen, same goes for Magna and Drujon. 3km to go, we have 12 riders going clear from the bunch:
Clarke Kankovsky Thorsen Speirs Manarelli Drujon Andriato Stroetinga Mezgec Sweeting Haddou Nateghi
We do also notice the first small groups being dropped by the peloton, with Boaro and today's escaping group as the most notable names..
..and another notable thing is the peloton allowing those 12 sprinters a huge gap for the final 2km: the bunch is already 40 seconds down and is likely to finish with a gap today.
At the very front, we still see Kankovsky/Thorsen leading the long train, while Magna's Speirs couldn't pull Drujon to the front. He found a place right behind Andriato though!
Thorsen is on his own just at the kite, so way earlier than he was yesterday! Manarelli and Andriato, as well as Drujon and Mezgec right behind, opening up a small gap on Stroetinga/Sweeting!
Close to the final corner, Thorsen more and more suffers and Andriato/Manarelli go past him to take the leading positions!
Drujon trying to slip through on the right side, Mezgec now accelerating to move past Andriato..
Just a few metres to go and Andriato still in the lead.. Mezgec on second now, as Manarelli and Drujon can't really make up some ground! Thorsen likely to finish fifth today..
Mezgec comes closer, but Andriato holds him off with just one bike length to go..
..and it's enough to take the stage: Andriato celebrates a nice win ahead of Mezgec and Manarelli! A nicely timed sprint by Andriato in particular.
Drujon and GC-leader Thorsen complete the Top-5, as the other sprinters couldn't hang on with today's very best.
The peloton eventually lost 1'06" on this group (where Nielsen caught up late)! It's unlikely those guys will be a factor for the GC for a long time, but still a quite interesting bunch sprint then.
Thorsen will enjoy one more day in yellow, now leading by 4" on Andriato and 8" on Manarelli. Tomorrow's next flat stage will offer those sprinters another chance to deliver.
