The Tour of America kicks off with the first of three consecutive (almost) pan-flat stages, which are expected to be for the sprinters. 178km in total, today's route features an easy second half towards the finish in Chico.
Mezgec, Manarelli, Drujon, Andriato and Belarusbank's Kankovsky may be considered as the top-favorites for a possible bunch sprint today.
Crane was the only one out of a small group of attackers to finally go solo for the break of the day. The US boy will therefore take the first KoM-lead by winning today's two sprints in the first half:
KoM-competition Crane 11 Van Zandbeek 4 Rousseau 3
Crane would of course also take the only intermediate sprint, where Thorsen sprints for a second place ahead of Mezgec, about 6 minutes later with still 94km to go.
So may Belarusbank go for Thorsen as their main sprinter here?
One thing is for sure, the team looks set to be play a main role in bunch sprints: accompanied by Kazzinc and Bonsucro, it's mostly Belarusbank chasing hard in the second half of the day.
The peloton narrows the gap to Crane back to just a minute with now less than 20km remaining..
..and those sprinter teams deliver, reeling today's solo-escapee right in time for the expected bunch sprint. An overview of the trains with 3.5km to go:
Pereira Aguilar Manarelli Clarke Kankovsky Racault Thorsen Speirs Haddou Drujon Andriato Rohregger Sweeting Mezgec
So Thorsen indeed the sprinter for Belarusbank here! A few more names still trying to join those three trains..
..like Ewan, Nateghi and Stroetinga or De Ketele, who all jump behind a more and more suffering Bonsucro-train with 2.3km to go!
Belarusbank's train going strong into the lead, while Sweeting caught up to Andriato and Mezgec still fighting to join the mix!
Kankovsky now leading Thorsen/Haddou towards the flamme rouge, with Magna's Speirs/Drujon still on their right..
..on the left side of the road, Manarelli kicks off his sprint, while Mezgec is led by teammate Lee to finally catch up to those names ahead..
A few hundred metres to go and Kankovsky still leading out Thorsen! Haddou still behind Thorsen, too.. Drujon now kicking off his sprint with a small disadvantage on the leading duo!
Manarelli also couldn't really make up some ground in the meantime and Andriato/Sweeting may be boxed in behind Drujon! Mezgec accelerating from too far behind, it seems.
Here goes Thorsen now! Kankovsky with a smart move to maybe blocking a now really fast Manarelli, while Drujon tries to slip through on the right side! Haddou though trying to hang on with Thorsen now..
..but he suffers big time and won't be a factor here:
It looks like a fight between Thorsen/Drujon and Manarelli! Mezgec moving forward as well, but he's out of reach for the win..
..which goes to.... Thorsen! A tight decision, but Drujon has to settle for 2nd ahead of Manarelli!
Definitely a huge day for Thorsen, who might not have expected to win stages on the PCT-level. A great leadout by Kankovsky though, who completes the Top-5 behind local hero Sweeting.
Mezgec 6th ahead of Andriato and Haddou/De Ketele.. Haddou had no power left to benefit from his great position behind Thorsen, who of course takes the first GC-lead thanks to his victory today!
