Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 12
SportingNonsense
A stage race feast of mountains comes to an end with a flat 20km ITT in Bogota - which some will enjoy more than others.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-1.jpg

One of the strongest against the clock is the 3rd to start, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Jesse Sergent. He sets the benchmark in 28'21.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-2.jpg

The challenge came from Wikipedia. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg fell 5 seconds short, but taking the lead by 5 second was the American i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Brent Bookwalter.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers took 3rd, with the same time as Sergent, and this was enough to move ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Solis for 20th in GC.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Moschella, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Henao Montoya, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Costagli remain in their same positions from 19 to 16 after the ride. Moschella and Henao started the day on the same time, but the Colombian rode a faster time trial.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Brambilla was the fastest Project 1t4i rider today, which on a personal level keeps him in 15th in GC. Combined with the times of Henao and Van der Velde, it also secures the Teams Classification win.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-5.jpg

If there was a question of whether the early time triallists would hold on for a top stage result, it is about to be answered.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kritskiy smashes the time of Bookwalter, beating him by 1'04. 2nd yesterday, will he be 1st today?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Monsalve and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón have been inseparable this race, finishing together on all mountain stages. That changes today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-7.jpg

An impressive ride puts Anton 4th, level with Faiers and Sergent. Monsalve could not respond, going 12 seconds lower. The Spaniard wins this battle then, but he does not take 12th in GC - as Kritskiy has overtaken both of them!

Next up, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Martijn Keizer. The most likely man to beat Kritskiy, and he is up at the checkpoints. 6 seconds at the first, 13 at the second.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-8.jpg

The Dutchman takes the lead! 18 seconds faster than Kritskiy, with only Amador likely to challenge him now.

Next are a pair of Heinekens. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Eastman has impressed, as 2nd best young rider, and is looking behind him trying to hold off Keizer for 10th in GC. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic is aiming forwards with a chance to overtake Guldhammer.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-9.jpg

It's a great ride from Eastman as he goes 3rd, but a loss of 1'13 is too much, so 10th place belongs to Keizer. Brajkovic then takes 3rd from him, finishing 29 seconds slower than the fastest time.

Here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Guldhammer then. Best young rider in the race and, for now, 2nd in the Points competition. He has 1'21 to play with on Brajkovic.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-10.jpg

That turns out to be plenty. The Dane loses 1'31 to Keizer, but that does not matter. He keeps 8th overall by 19 seconds.

Nothing to ride for for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Denifl, he will finish 7th overall. His time is the 5th fastest so far, 2 seconds ahead of teammate Brookwalter.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-11.jpg

What an incredible race it has been i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza and he still has a chance of fighting his way back into the Top 5, with small gaps infront of him. He beats Denifl today, 1'18 off Keizer.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-12.jpg

It's not to be for the Colombian as both i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Contador
and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Velits go faster than him. 6th is still way above expectations.

In the battle for 4th, Velits holds a slender 8 second advantage on Contador going into the stage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-13.jpg
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-14.jpg

But today they are completely unseparable. Same time at all check points, and then at the finish. Together they are 59 seconds behind Keizer for 4th/5th on the stage - the Spaniard marginally faster, but it is Velits who will take 4th in GC.

Costa Rica champion i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador is the last threat for the stage win, but will need to improve on an 11 second deficit early on.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-15.jpg

It is at least 3rd on GC for him, but not quite 3rd on the stage. Ending 34 seconds down, he is behind Brajkovic. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Martijn Keizer therefore wins the stage for Rothaus!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado extended his advantage on Amador to 64 seconds yesterday, and today he might need all of that.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-16.jpg

Actually it is a good time today for the Portugese. 1'07 down is 7th on the stage, and he keeps half of his advantage on Amador. The Costa Rican will edge in front of him in the Points competition though, as they both jump Guldhammer for 2nd and 3rd.

Finally, the man of the race i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon. Pretty slow today, 2'12 behind Keizer.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-12-17.jpg

But who cares about today? It was all about Stage 11 for Alarcon. His final winning margin in this race is 2'54. The amount of time he finished ahead of Machado yesterday? 2'57!

117 finisher in all, one of the most attritional races of the season. VolksWagen and Pokerstars only had 2 riders left by the end of it! Vuelta a Colombia has once again proven to be an entertaining ProTour race.
