The final mountain stage, with a huge finish to Cerro Calima.
7 go into the breakaway:
Kwiatkowski
Ivars
Ruijgh
Laengen
Vysna
Atapuma
Rosch
Just one in here is interested in the KoM points and that is Rosch, who already has a stage win from the race. He makes a good start by winning the first Cat 1 climb.
Let's go straight to the final 30km. The break lead by 5 and a half minutes but most of the remaining distance is uphill.
Kritskiy has not had a great race so far, but he immediately attacks.
Immediately Alarcon hits the front, there's going to be a lot of suffering today!
Going up part 1 of the final climb, a split occurs under Alarcon's pressure. 21 in front, but some big names behind: Keizer, Eastman, Brambilla, Dombrowski, Faiers, Medvedev, Costagli
The breakaway leads over the summit of the Cat 1 climb and crucially Rosch is first over. This takes him to 68 KoM points. Didac Ortega has 67, so it looks very much like the German has stolen the King of the Mountains title on the very last day of climbing.
Kritskiy is closing in, while Monsalve has now attacked the peloton. Antón and Solis follow, but so does Alarcon! Incidentally the earlier split has been closed down, so Keizer, Eastman, Brambilla and co. are back in contention.
But these new attacks do lead to a new split. There are 12 rider who have made the selection:
Alarcon
Antón
Brajkovic
Contador
Solis
Monsalve
Guldhammer
Amador
Denifl
Suaza
Velits
Machado
Kritskiy catches the breakaway at the foot of the 2nd part of the climb, with a nice 3 minute gap on the GC rider group. Within a kilometre he has left them all behind.
It all comes back together again in the peloton, Alarcon doing all of the pace setting, they soon close in on the breakaway.
With 9.5km to go, he attacks! His rivals are just left speechless, they can't respond to that.
Amador picks up the pace setting with Machado. Contador, Denifl, Suaza, Velits and Brajkovic can follow, but the rest cannot.
Alarcon has already opened up 1'20 on his rivals, danced past the former breakaway, and now it looking at a similar gap up to Kritskiy.
Alarcon's gap just keeps growing, now to 2 minutes. The race for overall victory is surely being concluded today.
And now with 4km to go, Alarcon has caught Kritskiy. The Russian might have thought he was on for a stage win with a 3 minute advantage going into the final climb. Well he still has a 3 minute advantage, but he did not count on Alarcon being able to cross that gap and join him.
4'40 behind those two, and about 1'30 behin the main chasing group, is a group of 15 featuring Keizer, Eastman, Guldhammer, Henao Montoya, Antón, Costagli, Monsalve, Brambilla, Dombrowski, Ratiy and a few others. This is not looking good for Guldhammer in his fight with Denifl, while he may become under threat from Brajkovic too - the Slovenian already set to pass Eastman and Keizer on GC.
Into the last 2 kilometres, Alarcon is turning the screw on Kritskiy.
The gap to the chaser has stopped ballooning out, and is holding firm at 3 minutes.
Suaza and Brajkovic are starting to struggle! The others are much better climbers than them, so it has taken a lot to hold on until now.
The stage, and the race, belongs to Jose Alarcon. He has destroyed the field here today, not for the first time this season.
Kritskiy suffers in, exactly 1 minute later. He started the day a disappointing 17th overall but will at least be moving up into the Top 15 now.
Machado really went for it in the final kilometre, finding an extra bit of energy to leap away from the chasing group. He needs the time on Amador ahead of the time trial, and this might be it. He finishes 2'57 behind Alarcon today.
Amador is at 3'18. Throw in the time bonus and Machado now as a 1'04 advantage over him.
Contador, Velits and Denifl are in at 3'37 - gapping Suaza today was critical for Contador and Velits and with the Colombian in at 4'11 they do both move ahead of him in GC - just 17 seconds separate the trio though.
Today completes the recovery for Brajkovic, after his time loss from a crash, and he will be back inside the Top 10.
Eastman and Guldhammer manage a 10 second gap on the rest of their group - they come in 5'51 behind.
Henao and Brambilla are in there, and the performance of Ruijgh, finishing a few minutes later after a day in the break, helps them back to the top of the Teams Classification - with a 4 minute lead on Good Energy.
20 more outside the time limit today. It was a tough stage but only 138.2km long, which reduced the size of the limit. With only a TT to come, all this means is less riders receiving their 5 point finishing bonus, although Howard may have held on to a Top 10 in the Points competition.
