Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 11
SportingNonsense
The final mountain stage, with a huge finish to Cerro Calima.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-1.jpg

7 go into the breakaway:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Kwiatkowski
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Ivars

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-2.jpg

Just one in here is interested in the KoM points and that is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Rosch, who already has a stage win from the race. He makes a good start by winning the first Cat 1 climb.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-3.jpg

Let's go straight to the final 30km. The break lead by 5 and a half minutes but most of the remaining distance is uphill.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kritskiy has not had a great race so far, but he immediately attacks.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-4.jpg

Immediately i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon hits the front, there's going to be a lot of suffering today!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-5.jpg

Going up part 1 of the final climb, a split occurs under Alarcon's pressure. 21 in front, but some big names behind: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Keizer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Eastman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Brambilla, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Medvedev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Costagli

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-6.jpg

The breakaway leads over the summit of the Cat 1 climb and crucially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Rosch is first over. This takes him to 68 KoM points. Didac Ortega has 67, so it looks very much like the German has stolen the King of the Mountains title on the very last day of climbing.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-7.jpg

Kritskiy is closing in, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Monsalve has now attacked the peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Solis follow, but so does i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon! Incidentally the earlier split has been closed down, so Keizer, Eastman, Brambilla and co. are back in contention.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-8.jpg

But these new attacks do lead to a new split. There are 12 rider who have made the selection:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Contador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Solis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Monsalve
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Guldhammer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Denifl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Velits
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kritskiy catches the breakaway at the foot of the 2nd part of the climb, with a nice 3 minute gap on the GC rider group. Within a kilometre he has left them all behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-10.jpg

It all comes back together again in the peloton, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon doing all of the pace setting, they soon close in on the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-11.jpg

With 9.5km to go, he attacks! His rivals are just left speechless, they can't respond to that.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador picks up the pace setting with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Contador, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Denifl, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Velits and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic can follow, but the rest cannot.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon has already opened up 1'20 on his rivals, danced past the former breakaway, and now it looking at a similar gap up to Kritskiy.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-14.jpg

Alarcon's gap just keeps growing, now to 2 minutes. The race for overall victory is surely being concluded today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-15.jpg

And now with 4km to go, Alarcon has caught Kritskiy. The Russian might have thought he was on for a stage win with a 3 minute advantage going into the final climb. Well he still has a 3 minute advantage, but he did not count on Alarcon being able to cross that gap and join him.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-16.jpg

4'40 behind those two, and about 1'30 behin the main chasing group, is a group of 15 featuring i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Keizer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Eastman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Guldhammer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Henao Montoya, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Costagli, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Monsalve, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Brambilla, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski,i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ratiy and a few others. This is not looking good for Guldhammer in his fight with Denifl, while he may become under threat from Brajkovic too - the Slovenian already set to pass Eastman and Keizer on GC.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-17.jpg

Into the last 2 kilometres, Alarcon is turning the screw on Kritskiy.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-18.jpg

The gap to the chaser has stopped ballooning out, and is holding firm at 3 minutes.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic are starting to struggle! The others are much better climbers than them, so it has taken a lot to hold on until now.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-20.jpg

The stage, and the race, belongs to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Jose Alarcon. He has destroyed the field here today, not for the first time this season.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-21.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kritskiy suffers in, exactly 1 minute later. He started the day a disappointing 17th overall but will at least be moving up into the Top 15 now.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado really went for it in the final kilometre, finding an extra bit of energy to leap away from the chasing group. He needs the time on Amador ahead of the time trial, and this might be it. He finishes 2'57 behind Alarcon today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador is at 3'18. Throw in the time bonus and Machado now as a 1'04 advantage over him.

Contador, Velits and Denifl are in at 3'37 - gapping Suaza today was critical for Contador and Velits and with the Colombian in at 4'11 they do both move ahead of him in GC - just 17 seconds separate the trio though.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-23.jpg

Today completes the recovery for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic, after his time loss from a crash, and he will be back inside the Top 10.

Eastman and Guldhammer manage a 10 second gap on the rest of their group - they come in 5'51 behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-11-24.jpg

Henao and Brambilla are in there, and the performance of Ruijgh, finishing a few minutes later after a day in the break, helps them back to the top of the Teams Classification - with a 4 minute lead on Good Energy.

20 more outside the time limit today. It was a tough stage but only 138.2km long, which reduced the size of the limit. With only a TT to come, all this means is less riders receiving their 5 point finishing bonus, although i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Howard may have held on to a Top 10 in the Points competition.
