Tour d'Azerbaijan - Stage 4

There's no question, that today's 114km challenge is the queen stage in this race: featuring three steep climbs in the final 50km of the day, including a long summit finish up "Pirgulu"!

It's the day, where former race-leader Rodrigues and top-favorite Arroyo have to deliver. Rodrigues ain't too far behind new leader Schurter in the GC and already took line honours on second day. Arroyo is a further minute down in GC and needs to put some pressure on both.. also, Ochoa Quintero hadn't his best race here and has to bounce back today.

i.imgur.com/UuGuoKI.jpg

The day kicks off with quite a bang, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Beltran, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Rosa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Castano went for an early breakaway attempt! A group far too dangerous for the other teams though: it's just a short-lived attempt.

A few minutes later, we seem to have finally found today's breakaway:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Yermane, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Firsanov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Semple and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Cerny go clear 78km before finish! Firsanov as best-placed in GC (+ 2.42) and Semple (8th in KoM, 10pts) as the most promising rider to attack mountain-leader Jeannesson (16pts).

i.imgur.com/iIZ64H8.jpg

Euskaltel is well aware of the dangerous situation for Jeannesson and sends one of their best climbers on the attack with now 45km remaining and the escapees just 1'40" in the lead:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez (+ 1.49) will aim for both the next two KoM-sprints and putting pressure on the other GC-favorites!

i.imgur.com/yKVpYUI.jpg

He almost catches up to the two remaining escapees Firsanov and Yermane at the first of three climbs, but it's the Russian to take this sprint.

Fernandez 30" in arrears, with the peloton further 50" down.. this is going to be a tough race with the pace already being quite high back in the bunch.

i.imgur.com/52P4tlY.jpg

Yermane is dropped, too: Firsanov is joined by Fernandez to enter the penultimate climb (28km to go) with just a 39"-gap on the peloton (121 riders)!

i.imgur.com/2NrlIIr.jpg

And close to the mountaintop, the peloton is soon to pull this duo back. Firsanov though narrowly holds off an attacking i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Rudaskov to also take out this sprint for the provisional lead in the KoM-rankings:

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Firsanov 26 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Jeannesson 16 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Chamorro 14

i.imgur.com/wl8uuEw.jpg

His escape though is over a few moments later, as the peloton reeled him and Rudaskov in and bring it all back together with just the challenging final climb to come.

13km to go now and as the peloton more and more goes into pieces (49 riders), we see the next attack:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Tiernan-Locke (+ 2.27 in GC) goes for an early move!

i.imgur.com/Z1rxNNg.jpg

The Brit ain't the best climber and is therefore allowed to establish a 55"-gap with now 6km to go:

the bunch continues to get smaller with now just 25 riders remaining and some first notable names being dropped:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab was one of the first to got dropped! Another disastrous day for him.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Haga, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png De Greef, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Raisin/Rosskopf, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Ardila and also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Montenegro can't follow anymore! Bad news for Chiquita in particular.

i.imgur.com/aaPxDgg.jpg

A few of them manage to re-join the first bigger group (at least for a few moments), where the GC-contenders kept shadowing each other, allowing Tiernan-Locke to grow his lead to a minute!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues (GC's 2nd, + 0.12) is now the first big gun to launch his move just at the 5km-mark! The mission is clear: drop race-leader Schurter that way!

i.imgur.com/tnquDMr.jpg

And he opened up a notable gap quickly, with now a few more riders trying to jump behind about 3km before finish:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Sorensen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Martinez as well as GC-leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter, who's obviously the GC-rider for his team now!

i.imgur.com/2xmIL5e.jpg

Just 1.2km to go for still leading Tiernan-Locke, who may fear a strong companion to join him soon though:

Leading i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Tiernan-Locke (+ 2.27 in GC)

at 0.14 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues (+ 0.12)

at 0.52 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo (+ 1.10) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Sorensen (1.15) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Martinez (1.47)

at 1.11 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter (GC-leader)

at 1.25 27 riders including i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Chamorro i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Losada/Paulinho/Nicacio

So Schurter desperately fighting to hang on, but at this point more likely to get swallowed by the bigger group instead of joining group Arroyo!

i.imgur.com/f3hSrlG.jpg

..even more, since Arroyo attacks the chasing group to narrow the gap to Rodrigues at least! Schurter definitely won't follow, it's all about how much time he will lose on both Rodrigues and also Arroyo!

i.imgur.com/zh04Hjz.jpg

Rodrigues caught up to Tiernan-Locke in the meantime, though not yet in striking distance to fly past him..

..Arroyo out of reach for the stage-win (with just a few hundred metres to go), but fighting to close up..

i.imgur.com/k5zswwB.jpg

..while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Tiernan-Locke managed to hold off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues til the finish to take out this queen stage! A huge result for the puncheur, who may even climb some places in the GC. Rodrigues still with an important result, too, as he is likely to slip back into yellow today.

i.imgur.com/NUNDLA5.jpg

+ 25" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo, who might have attacked a bit too late and missed a chance to beat Rodrigues!

+ 50" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Martinez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Sorensen

i.imgur.com/odKxAfx.jpg

+ 1'22" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter, who held off the first bigger group by a few seconds! This was a huge fight and he may have a chance to keep a podium-spot in the GC. No more notable names got dropped by the bigger group, so except of those names being mentionend, most GC-contenders avoided any serious troubles today..

..just like Rodrigues, who re-takes the GC-lead by quite a margin on... Schurter! The Swiss fought hard and is rewarded with a 2nd place in GC, just 5" ahead of Arroyo! With just one flat stage to come, he's on a very good way to an outstanding GC-result here.

In other news, Rodrigues keeps his points-lead thanks to some consistent racing so far. Firsanov also maintained the KoM-lead by just 4pts on Rodrigues. There's no more mountain-sprints on final day, so as long as he finishes this race, he just secured himself the polka dot today.
