A hill stage, which if the GC riders really go for then they could perhaps expose Alarcon's weakness - and they could certainly put pressure on high flying Suaza, 4th overall, who is awful in this terrain. The only problem is that all the hills come at the start.

Atapuma until the 3rd climb to catch up with Konig, Scarponi and Aru again.

Then came the very long descent, and suddenly there is just 20km to go. The break has a 3 minutes lead, but Simply Red Bull don't seem to be chasing too hard.

Skip to 11km to go and clearly the breakaway are going to win the stage. Atapuma now attacks!

Aru joins him, and they open up a 20 second gap over Scarponi and Konig. The latter two already showed themselves to be the strongest of the group, and they are the marginally better sprinters too, but they have work to do now.

Guldhammer, Schreurs and Kritskiy are next ahead of 3 of the rare remaining sprinters: Howard, Demare and Kreder.

The peloton finished at 3'39, while the Solis group rolls in at 8'18. Not bad a loss having been dropped all stage - just shows how little the peloton tried. A 2 place drop to 22nd for Solis - to the benefit of Faiers and Medvedev.

Konig picked up the most KoM points today, 31, put that only puts him 15th in the standings. Good Energy meanwhile reclaim the Teams Classification lead from Project 1t4i, now 2 minutes ahead.
