More mountains, but this time the hardest climb is in the middle of the stage, and we have a downhill finish. Can there still be gaps?
Here's the break:
Camier
Peterson
Olivier
Up to and including the Cat 1 climb, it was Camier who picked up the most KoM points with 38, compared with 32 to Peterson and just 22 for Olivier. Peterson already had 26 points but never attacked on the climb for points, unlike Camier who did later on in the stage. The American's tally is now 58, so he would need to win the final Cat 2 to take the KoM lead from Ortega.
Faiers beat Curfs, Ratiy and Saldarriaga for the minor points behind in the peloton.
Ratiy joins Faiers in continuing to push on, even though there is 55km to go and there is at least 20km of flat roads now before the next climb.
By 36km to go those two are still clear, now 2 minutes ahead of the peloton - although still 3 minutes behind the break. And they aren't the only ones who think attacking on the flat is a good idea.
Contador, Machado, Suaza, Henao Montoya, Velits and Amador have sensed a chance to gain time on Alarcon!
Others try to follow, including Brajkovoic, Monsalve, Brambilla, Dombrowski, Eastman and Denifl, but don't get a gap.
This group catches Faiers and Ratiy, and we can see that Machado, Velits and Amador are really trying to make this stick.
The problem is that Wikipedia, B&O and in particular Simply Red Bull are driving hard. Sure enough, they catch them even just before the final climb. Wasted effort?
The breakaway are already climbing. Their lead is 2'46 and the climb only 6km long, so they have a good chance of reaching the summit perhaps - and maybe staying away on the downhill?
But Suaza has immediately instigated a South American move in the peloton. Henao Montoya is with him, and this time so is Alarcon. He knows to wait for the climb to make his move!
Machado leads the chase with Contador and Keizer closest. Denifl, Brajkovic, Amador and Guldhammer also well placed and a gap has formed behind them.
A scramble follows behind with Eastman, Anton, Brambilla and Velits attack to try to catch up again.
Machado takes advantage of it being Suaza doing the relaying, and not one of the other two, to close the gap - with the breakaway's lead falling to just 45 seconds now. Only Denifl, Amador and Contador are still with Machado.
As soon as these groups merge, Amador attacks!
The breakaway are just going to hold on for the points, but Camier beats Peterson to deny the American the chance to take the KoM lead - he ends the stage just 1 point short of Ortega.
Here's the situation as the descent begins:
Monsalve and Costagli were the last to attack from the peloton on the climb - the pack is slow moving and the inactive riders like Kritskiy and Dombrowski are losing out here.
Velits is able to solo across the gap to the front group.
Guldhammer, Brambilla and Keizer attack to do the same - it's a tough 50 second gap though.
Alarcon attacks!
No initial reaction, so much so that the gap to the chasing group completely vanishes. Finally Machado tries to do something.
Alarcon now has a 25 second lead though.
It's 1 vs 18 with all attackers now together in the large group, but they aren't exactly cutting the gap.
Amador leads a new attack attempt
But with the finish moving into sight, nobody can find a way to close the gap. They're sprinting for it, but the stage may be lost.
Best sprinter in the group is Guldhammer, and having started a little way back he is now moving forward fast.
The stage goes to Alarcon, he extends his overall lead.
He only gets the bonus seconds though, no actual gap, and in 2nd place is the serial over-achiever of the race Suaza. The Colombian does have the best acceleration of the climb, which may explain his sudden sprinting prowess. Guldhammer edges out Denifl for 3rd.
Siutsou and Dombrowski went on a team exertion on the descent, but they finish 2 minutes behind. They at least gain nearly a minute on the peloton, which features a lazy Kritskiy.
Project 1t4i move ahead of Good Energy into the teams classification lead, but Heineken were the best team on the stage and now trail by just 36 seconds.
