Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 5
SportingNonsense
We arrive at the 2nd mountain stage, but it not the hardest of the race, and might not see huge gaps.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-1.jpg

Let's go straight to the top of the Cat 1 climb. We did have a break of 3, but now i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Rosch and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson have dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Vermeltfoort, and the Dutchman won't be coming back.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Curfs led the attacks for 4th on the climb, which would give 8 pts, with there being 4 points scoring positions left for the peloton.

It was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Saldarriaga who won the fight for 4th, but he doesn't gain much in the KoM standings, as leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Ortega was right behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri also managed to beat Curfs.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-3.jpg

Onto the Cat 3 and signs of recovery from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Henao Montoya. He attacks, and is followed by Hacecky, Faiers and Curfs.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-4.jpg

It does not stay clear, but indicates he can still fight for stage wins later in the race.

Onto the long descent towards the finish - with only the last small climb to go to make a difference. Or is it?

Many team leaders start attacking on the descent. First off is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Denifl with 36km still to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-5.jpg

Race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado is at it too, this time at 32km to go. Eastman, Velits, Dombrowski, Monsalve, Brambilla, Keizer and Denifl all follow this move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-6.jpg

There's enough pursuers in the peloton to bring things back together but closer to the finish the elastic finally breaks. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers is the first with the gap, after he managed to attack alone.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-7.jpg

He is less of a threat so maybe they let him go, but now also away is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Machado and he has i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Contador and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador for company.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-8.jpg

Alarcon, Guldhammer and Suaza are closest to catching up, while Keizer is also getting away - but being closely followed by attacks from Eastman, Kritskiy, Denifl, Velits and Brambilla.

With 7km to go, Peterson and Rosch still lead, but their gap is falling.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-9.jpg

Onto the final little climb they go. The gap on Faiers already decreasing to 30 seconds.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-10.jpg

Machado gets a little gap from his group and catches up with Faiers. Amador, Contador, Alarcon, Suaza and Guldhammer are in this group - everyone else is back in the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-11.jpg

There is a slight lull after Machado joins Faiers and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon takes advantage by powering away to the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-12.jpg

Also taking advantage are the day long breakaway. They won't be caught, and today's stage winner is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png David Rosch, after outsprinting wildcard rider i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-13.jpg

Alarcon takes 3rd but can't quite force a time gap - so he must settle for the 8 seconds of time bonus.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/col-5-14.jpg

Machado is 4th, from Contador and Guldhammer.

There is a gap between this group of 7 and the peloton though - a whole 45 seconds. This isn't great news for the likes of Monsalve, Velits, Kritskiy, Denifl and Eastman, who lead in the peloton.
