Tour of Norway - Stage 8
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_001_zpsd3a7659f.jpg

The Tour of Norway concludes with a crucial hilly stage, featuring a steep hilltop finish on the famous "Holmenkollen" and a challenging 187km route prior to this key climb for the final GC.

Schleck took yellow on the queen stage, but still has a way to go with less than a minute on remaining Top-10-riders. Local hero Boasson Hagen (13th in GC) has to bounce back from his dissapointing showing on the queen stage, as his team still lacks a stage-win here.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_002_zps5f93f0ee.jpg

And so it's one interesting decision to send i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk (GC + 1.57) into the 9-men-breakaway! This definitely could put some pressure on the other top-teams, as well as being a tactical move for the team and it's mission for glory in their home tour:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Ruijgh, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Koretzky, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Rybakov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Gallego Martin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Vansummeren as the remaining eight escapees today.

So some faces, we've already seen in early breaks here, with Rybakov (22pts), Koretzky (22pts) or Vansummeren (20pts) as possible KoM-contenders for leading Preidler (26), if this break will make it to the line ahead of the peloton!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_003_zps0e0ed90d.jpg

Good Energy and Vesuvio go for a high pace as we're already in the second half of the stage with just 57km remaining. The escapees lead by 2'18" at this point, but the most notable news just happened on a short, but steep climb a few moments before:

we see a major split inside the peloton with a second group of 85 riders being dropped! And we wouldn't mention this split, if it wasn't for a thrilling and tricky situation..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_004_zps542c47ef.jpg

GC's 2nd i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert clearly didn't pay enough attention here and finds himself amongst those being caught behind! Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys (GC's 6th) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley (10th) were obviously too bad positioned inside the peloton here:

Pendleton's and Lotto are of course those teams, which desperately try to catch up back to the leading peloton, which of course goes for a still brutal pace though! 42km before finish, this second bunch with Gilbert/Claeys is already 1'55" down on the first one and it ain't looking good for at least two GC-contenders here!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_005_zpsd9ffee89.jpg

The first serious attacks out of the first peloton won't make things easier: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Roux (GC's 16th) goes with 34km remaining, trying to bridge across a 2-minutes-gap on the early escapees!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_006_zps8dd3dcad.jpg

This breakaway group more and more goes into pieces as well, as just 5 riders are in the very front now:

20km to go and those five (Samoilev, Ruijgh, Rabottini, Kruijswijk and Kadri) maintain a 1'40"-gap on the bunch (65 riders), with Roux still in between.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_007_zps2414af54.jpg

Pokerstars, Wikipedia and Vesuvio are now keeping the pace up, as Kruijswijk may become a minor threat for the GC now: just 6km to go and the leading group holds on to a 1'20"-gap!

Roux couldn't maintain his small gap and is swallowed by the bunch. Group Gilbert/Claeys is already down by 3 minutes and will lose big time today! Horrible day for those top-puncheurs.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_008_zpsc5dac9e2.jpg

A good day for the breakaway though, as well as for local team Aker:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk (+ 1.57 in GC)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev (+ 3.06)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini (+ 3.13)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Ruijgh

enter the final 4km with still the same advantage (1.25) on the peloton! While they may not be a threat for Schleck anymore, there's definitely a nice chance for especially Kruijswijk to make a nice jump in the GC!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_009_zps4ba97613.jpg

And here we are on the "Holmenkollen"! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini soloes away from the leading group 3.6km to the line. A strong acceleration this is!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_010_zpse67fb407.jpg

Back in the bunch, the real action finally kicks off, too:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher (GC's 5th, + 0.42)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Hagen (13th, + 1.30)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Ginanni (12th, + 1.18)

went first, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck trying to follow, yet facing a 20"-gap with 2.8km remaining!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_011_zps25310bb5.jpg

In the meantime, Rabottini is on his way to line honours, it seems: 1.5km remaining and he holds off Kadri/Samoilev/Kruijswijk by 38" at this point!

Group Schumacher/Hagen/Ginanni with a 31"-gap on solo-chasing Schleck, while the bigger group (38 riders) behind is down by further 18"!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_012_zpsfefe2a02.jpg

Schumacher, as the biggest threat for the GC-victory now, keeps pushing it and goes for another kick with about 1.3km to go for this strong group!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_013_zps7114ca25.jpg

And that's the current situation: Rabottini going strong with three early escapees still in between him and group Schumacher.. Schleck definitely has to fear the German attacking his yellow!

GC's 3rd Van Garderen still in the bigger group 22" behind Schleck, just like Swift, by the way.. Gilbert, Clayes and Bewley though are likely to drop far down the rankings today!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_014_zps84df0553.jpg

The stage goes to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini, who attacked early on the climb and brought it home easily. Well done!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_015_zps0b5a576f.jpg

In the meantime, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen finally launches his first move, trying to bridge across a 16"-gap to Schleck! The GC-leader is still fighting his way back to group Schumacher with another 15"-gap to close though!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_016_zps9604628b.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri crosses the line 24" behind Rabottini to hold off a strong finishing 3-men-group of favorites:

+ 24" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Hagen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Ginanni, as well as escapee i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev!

It's going to be very close one for Schleck, who doesn't finish too far behind...

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_017_zpse03a2ada.jpg

+ 46" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck! An unlucky decision for Schleck, but it might be just enough to defend his yellow..

+ 1'01" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen

+ 1'10" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Gastauer

+ 1'19" for the first bigger group with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Caruso, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Sagan, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Swift, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Schreurs or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png vd Hugenhaben

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_018_zpse401d467.jpg

+ 4'09" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley! It must been said once again: horrible day!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_8_019_zpsa0c17db5.jpg

A huge day for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck though: the veteran indeed defended his GC-lead by 20" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher and 49" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen! A strong performance overall and a huge fight today. With teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Swift also hanging on to finish 10th in the GC (plus 2nd in points and another stage-win), this was definitely a great race for Vesuvio.

Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Hagen (5th) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk (11th) finally gave their team some reason to celebrate. It might have been a rather low-key performance overall, but this final stage went pretty well for the local team.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Ginanni made a nice jump onto 4th, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Caruso, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Sagan, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Schreurs and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa completing the Top-10.. Wildcard-entree i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge 12th ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini, who completes a nice result for his team that way.

Biggest losers today: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert (from 2nd to 40th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys (6th to 41st) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley (10th to 42nd)! Some other GC-favorites like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Flügel (25th) or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png vd Hugenhaben (24th) won't be too satisfied with their showings here, too. Though it must have been said, that Flügel clearly had some bad luck with a crash on the queen stage.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Preidler at least took home the KoM-shirt for his team, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley takes the points-competition (and three stage-wins) for a huge race despite his (somehow expected) losses today.
