Tour of Norway - Stage 7
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_001_zps9ad39eae.jpg

Last flat stage finishing in Sarpsborg: 185km in total, featuring three short climbs and a slightly ascending finishing stretch.

The sprinters dominated all the flat days so far, so we should expect yet another fight between triple stage-winner Bewley and Swift on first hand.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_002_zpse8995472.jpg

Like yesterday, it's 6 riders in the break of the day, with the best-placed riders at + 4.30 in GC:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Martens, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Vichot, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Vermeltfoort, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Ovechkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Reichenbach, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev

So we have Stage 3's winner Vichot again going for line honours and also Vermeltfoort, who took out a breakaway-stage in the Tour de Suisse last month!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_003_zps89e90d64.jpg

Opposing to the previous days, we see Pendleton's and Wikipedia leading the chase back in the peloton. They still face a 5'30"-gap with now 68km remaining though..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_004_zps00a4d651.jpg

And it ain't exactly looking like the dominance, which the peloton showed in the flat stages here before: Wikipedia all alone at the front, no sign of Pokerstars or Good Energy to join them.

33km to go and the escaping group holds on to a 3'35"-gap!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_005_zps3c1c9558.jpg

Still the same gap with now just 13km remaining! So this stage is likely to go to those escapees, while race-leader Schleck ain't looking in danger to being attacked in the GC. Anyway, given this latest gap, three of those riders at the front may at least hope for a nice jump in the GC today (Vichot, Martens and Vermeltfoort are all about 4.30 down on Schleck)!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev is the first to not wait for the sprint and attacks the group!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_006_zps4018109a.jpg

He established a 15"-gap with now 4km remaining! But his former breakaway ain't giving up, as also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Vichot attacks!

The peloton is down by 3 minutes, so at least tries to limit the losses and avoid any "stupid" GC-moves today..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_007_zps94a37301.jpg

As soon as Vichot caught up to Samoilev (2km to go), some kind of tactical play begins.. so the duo slows down for a moment:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Martens is the next out of the chasing group to bridge across this leading duo!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_008_zps1f6944aa.jpg

And he went for a strong attack, moving past Samoilev/Vichot as he enters the final km..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_009_zps7d3dd7ab.jpg

..to take out this seventh stage: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Martens beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Vichot, who misses out on his second victory here! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Samoilev 3rd ahead of the remaining three early escapees.

Will those three mentioned possible GC-threats really stand a chance to move up the rankings as well?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_010_zpscfa6b64d.jpg

Not as far, as the latest gap might have suggested: the peloton kicked off the bunch sprint about 2'30" later, so did just enough to avoid any major changes inside the GC's Top-20 here.

But it's still a nice move for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Martens (15th in GC) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Vichot (18th) in particular! This may be their maximum to achieve, but they are capable of defending this Top-20 til the end.

It's about minor points towards the points-competition though: while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Mohs leads the sprint into it's final hundred metres, points-leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley has a small advantage on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Swift in this tight sprint..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_011_zps556f15b1.jpg

..and the Kiwi lungs in for today's 8th place, just ahead of Swift and only beaten by Mohs!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Norway/14Norway_7_012_zps69ebd703.jpg

This gives i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png "Beastie" Bewley another 8 points to keep the points-lead (97) by the small margin of three points ahead of Swift (94)! With still a stage (though hilly rated) to come, this battle might not be all over.

Tomorrow should be the day for the more serious GC-contenders anyway: while Bewley/Swift still maintain nice positions in the rankings and a realistic chance to finish with a Top-15 in the GC here, it's mostly about race-leader Schleck and his 30"-advantage over Gilbert and some more threats for the final GC. Should be an interesting day!
