Today's 205km road race is expected to be the key stage for the GC: it's by far the toughest off all three hilly stages, with several steep climbs all the way to the finish.
The GC-contenders seemed to save their energy for this queen stage yesterday, so it's now up to the likes of Boasson Hagen, Ginanni, Van Garderen or Schleck to go for a selective race today.
A breakaway group is quickly formed, featuring 8 riders (with several of those being + 3.17 in the GC):
Amanuel, Preidler, Vermeltfoort, Vansummeren, Edet, Rybakov, Landa and Gallego Martin!
Gallego Martin (12th, 7pts) and Preidler (17th, 4pts) as potential KoM-contenders to attack mountain-leader Vichot (18pts)..
The race kicks off with a bang, as a general high pace would lead to the peloton going into pieces early today! With the escapees being hold to just a minutes-gap with still 128km to go, we notice a big group with more than 90 riders being dropped by the pacing first peloton:
Sagan definitely as the most notable name in this second group now, with his team working hard to bring him back to the first one..
..which they do 110km before finish, where the race seems to settle down! So maybe just a moment of shock for Becherovka here.
Slicky roads and the still fast race lead to several crashes as well and the most notable so far happens in the leading group:
Preidler (who went for the provisional KoM-lead in the meantime) hits the turf on a tricky descend 73km before finish! As if wasn't always bad to crash out of a leading group, it's even more frustrating that he may lose this mountain-lead again now..
..and if one rider crashing in the front group and maybe losing his KoM-lead weren't already bad news..
..what about Volkswagen's second rider going down just 25km later? Flügel with a nasty crash here, but he will be back on his bike quickly! Still a bad moment, just when the peloton would start narrowing the now 2'40"-gap on the breakaway. Horrible minutes for the German team here!
So how about some good news for the team?
Flügel re-joins the peloton (131 riders) about 35km before finish, with the break of the day still holding on to that 2'44"-gap!
Wait.. some more good news? Okay, here we go!
Preidler managed to fight his way back to the breakaway, where Rybakov took out the previous mountain sprint to take the KoM-lead. But the Austrian takes today's penultimate sprint for the lead again:
KoM-competition Preidler 26 Landa 24 Rybakov 22
On the following descend, we also see the first serious attacks back in the peloton!
Bobridge and Gastauer went for a short-lived attempt a few moments before, but now it's Van Garderen and Caruso with another attack with about 16km remaining for this still big group!
The duo struggled to open up a bigger gap with the pace back in the peloton of course kept very high at this point.. anyway, the duo went for another acceleration at the bottom of today's final ascend and were joined by two more riders then:
Roux and Claeys caught up to Van Garderen/Caruso and now (7km to go) also Gilbert tries to jump behind!
The peloton and those teams still pacing is well aware of this tricky situation though: a few moments later, both the early escaping group and most of the latest attackers are pulled back!
5.4km before finish, it's an all open race again: Caruso, Gilbert still hold on to a small gap, with now also Schleck launching his first move today!
Van Garderen jumped behind quickly to join Gilbert/Caruso, while Schleck opened up a 15"-gap on this three in the meantime!
Claeys and Sagan are next in line to attack the bunch. It's an action-packed race now!
And more GC-contenders try to not miss out on this probably crucial attacks: Costa, Schumacher, Schreurs and earlier crashed Flügel!
4.2km to go for Schleck, who's still leading solo with group Van Garderen being joined by Claeys..
The attacking goes on, as some top-favorites want to jump behind those latest group Costa/Schumacher:
Ginanni catches up to Flügel quickly, as also Bobridge follows! Anyway, those three are already down by a minute with less than 2km to go for Schleck!
1.8km to be precisive: Schleck grew his lead on Van Garderen/Gilbert to 23" in the meantime, with the following groups coming closer to each other..
For the overview: a third group with Schumacher/Costa/Claeys as the most notable names, while Ginanni still fights to close a small gap!
Back in the 39-men-bunch: race-leader Swift, Bewley, as well as Hagen and Sanchez Gil!
Van Garderen/Gilbert still fight to bridge across Schleck, while also holding off the strong chasing group by 15" with now a kilometre to go..
No chance to catch Schleck though: the veteran finishes off his perfect timed attack to take out this queen stage with a notable gap on the chasing duo. Well done!
+ 22" for the next group lead by Gilbert and Van Garderen! Bad luck for those two, as the 6-men-group with Schumacher, Claeys, Sagan, Schreurs, Caruso and Costa managed to finish with the same time as Gilbert!
+ 58" for Ginanni, who couldn't bridge across this group ahead!
+ 1'10" for Bobridge and a late attacking Hagen! The latter clearly with a too late move here to finish outside the Top-10 on this important stage..
+ 1'37" for the first bigger group with a strong race-leader Swift, Bewley, Flügel and vd Hugenhaben! While the first two did very well to stay in contention for a surprising good GC-result, the latter two definitely had hoped for more. Flügel might have suffered from his crash, of course.
Schleck takes over the GC-lead from teammate Swift, who hangs on for a strong 11th place though. Also Bewley did not drop too far as 14th in the GC with now three flat stages to come.
Gilbert new 2nd ahead of Van Garderen, while Hagen has to settle for 12th place at this point. Of course the final hilly stage with a hilltop-finish offers another chance to bounce back and so Schleck still as a way to go here, too.
