The hardest stage of the race. After yesterday's monotone ending, gaps are required today to prevent the race being dominated by the time triallists.
Here's the breakaway:
Eliad
Ospina
Matteau
Jacobsen
The Norwegian is quickly dropped, and Matteau later is too. Eliad and Ospina managed to share the KoM points evenly over the first 4 climbs.
#1 #2 #3 #4 Total Eliad5 5 3 3 16 Ospina3 3 5 5 16 Matteau1 1 1 3 Arredondo1 1
Arredondo had attacked the peloton on that 4th climb and he kept going. By the 5th climb - the hardest of the day as a Cat 3 - he had caught and passed Eliad and Ospina.
Crucially Eliad beat Ospina for 2nd, and so the Dell rider moves into a provisional KoM lead.
1 minute behind Arredondo are a group of 4 other attackers:
Geschke
Ito
Malle
Di Gregorio
The peloton are reduced to 27 and trail already by 2'45, with a further group of 70-odd at 3'40. Surprisingly Duggan is amongst those to have been caught in that 2nd peloton group.
The American is amongst those to regain contact though, and into the final 25km the peloton of 61 trails Arredondo by 2'40. Tiernan-Locke goes on the attack.
Di Gregorio, Geschke, Malle and Ito have caught up with Eliad and Ospina but are losing ground on Arredondo, the gap slipping to 1'20. So they try to attack again to keep the pace going.
Tiernan-Locke's attack did not get a gap, but the peloton has split once again. Soto Pereira is on the front for Bonsucro, who have a strong presence in this first group.
The Uruguayan is in fact the 2nd best time triallist in the group, behind Zoidl and just ahead of Hollenstein.
A number of team leaders have been caught out and are now 1'20 behind in the 2nd group. Duggan again, fellow American Rosskopf, and also Fonte,
Joeaar and Sobal amongst others.
Arredondo still leads the way atop the penultimate climb, with 16km to go.
Di Gregorio and Geschke are closest, but trail by 1 minute.
And into the final 10km they fall back to Malle and Ito, as the Euskaltel rider's lead extends out to 90 seconds.
No sign of any aggression from the peloton. Bonsucro are getting a little bit of help from Risa, but that's it. Yesterday's winner Marentes can't help, while possibly the GC favourite Zoidl has no teammates there to push in the chase.
Finally an attack comes from Bonsucro. But it isn't their top puncheur Godoy, but Soto Pereira, who has been doing most of the pacing.
Meanwhile Rosskopf's day is getting worse in the 2nd peloton, he has crashed.
Into the final climb, Arredondo's lead is now up to 1'40.
Ito leads the chasing group. It is a surprise that these 4 couldn't catch up with the lone leader, but at least they all look set to gain time - as none of the 4, nor Arredondo, are good time triallists.
The peloton trail Arredondo by 3 minutes and now, with 3km to go, some real action. Soto Pereira is already caught - as have been Eliad and Ospina - but still Bonsucro have their presence stamped out on the group as Paulinho leads the attacks, followed by Godoy, as well as Tiernan-Locke, Zoidl, Hollenstein, Moinard and Walker.
The winner is already clear. Arredondo decides to imitate the TV camera man as he comes in for a comfortable victory after 50km of solo riding.
Di Gregorio wins the sprint for 2nd, cutting the gap at the end to 1'26. Ito is 3rd as Geschke can surprisingly only manage 4th, at least beating Malle.
To complete a fantastic day for Euskaltel, Amael Moinard gets a gap on the peloton in the finish to take 6th place at 2'24.
Zoidl is the first peloton rider, at 2'45. Is that too much to make up in tomorrow's time trial?
Despite his crash, Rosskopf still managed to be the best finisher of those in the 2nd peloton. Still, he has lost 4'19 and will be very disappointed today. Duggan is in at 4'39, with the rest of the group at 4'52.
Marentes finished 11th to at least defend his Points jersey lead. Eliad takes the KoM lead on 20 ahead of Ospina on 18 and Arredondo on 17. Bonsucro's Borges was the only young rider in the first peloton, so takes the U25 lead. Euskaltel obviously now lead the team standings.
