You rarely see such a time trial. 3 mountains to climb and 46,7km shows how difficult this stage is.
For the GC riders it`s all about gaining time on the direct opponents while the sprinters and weaker climbers will have a day with lots of pain ahead.
Early on some pure time trialists, who are still in the race seem to dominate the race as Fiedler got the lead ahead of Malori, Bonnet or Viviani.
But the stronger riders will obviously beat those by a lot of time.
Already a bit later we see a lot of changes as the better climbers are taking over with Jakub Novak taking the lead ahead of Zabriskie, Geniez or Bookwalter.
French super star Coppel with a rather weak ride already 3'31 behind. But the mountains are not his strength, so he had no ambitions anyway I guess.
Let`s start the real broadcast with the 25th in the GC: Keinath. The German is a pretty good stage racer but is not able to take the lead.
He comes in 2nd behind a pure mountain goat: Suaza.
This shows that a high combination of climbing and time trialing is important today as the descends and few flat parts will need some strength against the clock, while the mountains will obviously only need good skills on the uphill part.
Keizer is one of the best time trialists but a weaker climber than others. Seeing him passing Fothen here shows the tough injury of the former German Tour winner.
First though with a really strong ride as he beats the best time by a bit more than 1min, while Fothen is losing ~4min to him.
Tenorio as 13th behind expectations so far. But together with Phinney he is one of the big favourites today. Next to all those 85 climbers of course.
At half time after the most flat part he is beating Keizer by almost 1min! And also Intxausti, who is 26s behind the Spaniard.
Other climbers such as Kohl, Marquez or Monsalve are all a bit more than 2min behind him at this point. Huge gaps can be expected obviously.
Spilak has not reached this point yet. But after the first climb he is just 9s behind Tenorio within the same time as Taaramae, Dekker and Intxausti actually. Amador, Madrazo and Pluchkin all 11-15s later.
One rider though did set a new best time there: Schleck. The Vesuvio leader is proving to be in a better form the longer the Tour goes. 1s faster than Tenorio after one climb.
Phinney was not able to top10 after the Cat.2. So it`s actually not looking too good for him to take this stage win. But the flat bit should favour him a lot more.
And as said above Pluchkin also did not ride as strong as eventually expected. Only 9th after the first climb 25s behind Schleck.
Kritskiy as 10th being 34s down at this point.
Intxausti just goes over the next mountain top and again 2nd behind Tenorio. Only 34s though. So the last climb has to decide.
Kritskiy as 3rd already 1'39 behind while Úran comes over with 1'51 behind Tenorio.
Dekker with a good ride. 3rd and 40s behind Tenorio and Intxausti.
Madrazo improved a bit on the 2nd climb. But still behind the leading trio. 4th and 1'32 behind his team mate.
Taaramäe with the same time as Dekker a bit earlier. 3rd and +40s at the top. In front of him Sicard lost 2'05 as 8th.
So the top10 GC riders also finish in the top10-15 on this stage. But the gaps are already quite big.
Tenorio comes to the finish passing Marquez. With 1h20'16 he takes the lead 2'35 ahead of Keizer, Suaza and Keinath.
Monsalve, Henao Montoya or Ratiy all 2min behind Keizer today.
Intxausti can`t beat the Spaniard but with only 37s he gets a nice 2nd at the moment.
Kohl with +4'19 not that strong today.
Meanwhile all riders have passed the Cat.1.
Andy Schleck as 3rd is 36s behind and a few seconds ahead of Taaramae/Dekker. Spilak with +1'03 a bit behind those while Pluchkin +1'18, Amador +1'27, Phinney +1'56 are further behind.
A strong finish by Dekker with +43s coming in 3rd just a tiny bit behind Intxausti.
Uran ahead of him and Kritskiy lost a bit more than 2min but stay ahead of Keizer.
Madrazo as 4th can`t be that happy. He might be not as strong as others against the clock but is the far better climber. So losing 1'40 coming in 4th is quite a lot.
Sicard coming in as 7th being 2'26 behind. A decent performance by him today.
Taaramäe almost caught him in the end but is missing a few seconds. +42s though means the 3rd place in the finish.
Amador losing a bit more but still fighting for the top5 overall. As 5th with +1'34 he at least will gain on Madrazo and Phinney today.
Spilak beats him being a bit under 1min behind Tenorio as 5th. So the gaps were expected to be a bit higher at half time actually. Still we will see some changes.
Schleck with an excellent stage. His regeneration seems to give him a big advantage. He is almost able to beat Tenorio but comes in as 2nd only 12s behind.
Pluchkin has to fight. He is 1'27 ahead of Schleck in the GC but the pressure is high now.
Phinney ahead of him is no danger as the US rider will lose time today.
Phinney finished 2'24 behind Tenorio and will surely drop behind Schleck and Spilak in the GC off the podium.
But what about Pluchkin? Can he defend the lead?
Yes. As 7th he is losing 1'20 to Tenorio, who wins the stage but stays ahead of Schleck by 20s only. Spilak as 3rd is 1'13 behind with Phinney as 4th being almost 2min back.
So a very close fight on the remaining stages can be expected with 2 more mountain stages. Andy Schleck has once more gained time on his opponents and is now very close in the fight for yellow.
With his 2nd today Andy Schleck will take over the KoM jersey being 8 points ahead of Vanendert.
