Another flat stage and after the last was given to the breakaway, the sprinter teams should do a bit more today despite having reduced riders.
It`s the last sprinter stage before Paris and with 5 consecutive mountain stages to decide the GC, some sprinters might not even reach Paris.
7 riders in todays breakaway though shows that several teams want to avoid a sprint finish. Teams like Volkswagen, Pokerstars or Rothaus, who lost their sprinter already join the attacks to get a stage win.
Oliveira
Goncalves
Kirsch
Brändle
Vanendert
Suryadi
Roux
Kirsch hits the asphalt which shows that the rain can become dangerous. It`s early in the race though and so he is able to join them just a little bit later again.
KoM leader Vanendert wants to take any points here as the harder mountain stages favour other riders.
Cat.3 Vanendert6 Suryadi4 Roux2
Once again a crash and this time a GC rider. It`s Marquez, 16th. The Spaniard is quickly up again though chasing the peloton. Other crash victims in those first half kilometers were Ivars and Bilbao.
Vanendert also takes the 2nd KoM while Suryadi took the sprint a bit earlier.
Sprint Suryadi6 Roux4 Oliveira2
Cat.4 Vanendert5 Roux3 Oliveira1
Nasty weather conditions today to start the 3rd week. At least all crashers have joined the peloton again with B&O controlling the situation for race leader Pluchkin.
84km for the breakaway with the peloton having 6km more or a 9min gap slowly getting smaller again.
With 25km the gap is still at 3'40 but at least the sprinter teams Aker, Lotto, Good Energy and Becherovka are doing a high pace. Even without any wind the peloton is lined up and many riders should be careful in the later rows to not create any gaps.
18km to go and the breakaway knows that a win is possible. The two strongest puncheur in there with Vanendert and Roux attack hoping to get rid of the rest.
10km and they don`t really get a gap but a few seconds.
The peloton is 1'30 behind, so a very close finish between both groups.
6km and 1min. Even König in the first position now working for their sprinters Howard/Vesely. You clearly see the influences of the reduced teams here as some sprinter teams lack the power to go full speed for a longer time.
Roux and Vanendert are caught with 5km to go and immediately the next attack. It`s Kirsch, who obviously has recovered well from his crash.
The sprinters might come too late. They are behind their leadouts now giving everything.
Croket Rabottini Bennati Guarnieri Vesely Spilak Phinney Howard Ulissi Kritskiy- - - - - - Van Heerden Reijnen Kreder
Back to the front where Kirsch still has a gap. Brändle the strongest of those behind.
The recent attackers Roux and Vanendert can`t do a lot to counter as also Oliveira is out of energy.
The sprinters clearly come 1-2km to late.
Guarnieri in the lead ahead of Bennati, Spilak and Howard with Ulissi a bit behind. But it`s only about the last top10 spots.
500m left and Kirsch still looking good to take this one as Brädnle can`t close the gap.
Great win for the young Vesuvio rider, who seem to be everywhere in breaks and mountain stages taking lots of points here and there.
Brändle finishing 2nd once again after the 13th stage already ahead of Goncalves and Suryadi.
Oliveira wins the fight for the last spots ahead of Vanendert and Roux.
The peloton clearly beaten with Kolesnikov, Phinney and Spilak on the first three places, which shows that the sprinters and their leadouts are too exhausted and could really need a rest. With 5 mountain stages to follow this won`t happen very quickly though.
