Tour de France - Stage 7
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0001.jpg

The 7th stage could be one for the sprinters but also is considered to see a breakaway opportunity with some hills in the final third. Also the finish is on a short uphill section.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0002.jpg

3 breakaway riders.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Kittel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Vaugrenard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Brutt
The Russian is by far the best placed as 27th being 5'50 behind Taylor Phinney. More interesting though is Marcel Kittel, who could take over the KoM lead if taking any points at the late Cat.4. So far he has to share the lead with Vanbilsen.
Also the finish seems to be Cat.4 rated and so he could actually get a decent KoM gap if finishing ahead of the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0006.jpg

Good Energy, Aker, Pokerstars, Lotto and 1-2 Wikipedia riders show that the sprinter teams expect to have a chance here as well. This is obviously not the best news for the breakaway.
With 100km to go the gap has reached the maximum with 7min but starting with the hillier part it`s going down again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0013.jpg

Only 3'30 are left with 55km to go where Vaugrenard takes the sprint.

Sprint

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Brutt4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Kittel2

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0016.jpg

As seen on most stages the sprinter teams stop working with ~50-40km to go and the GC leader team takes over. It seems to be some sort of rest before the last effort and sprint preperation really start.
But with 42km to go and a gap of still 3min the sprinter teams are back to the front doing all the work. In especially Pokerstars and Good Energy with 3 riders each are working, while Lotto still has 1 rider there. Aker stopped their effort. A first sign that this stage starts to be too difficult for the sprinters?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0020.jpg

The hardest bit is yet to come. First two short hills of which the 2nd is quite steep and then the uphill sprint in the end.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0021.jpg

Lotto with a 2nd rider and also Aker is there again.
So Bennati, Guarnieri, Boonen and Van Heerden all seem to be confident to perform well on this terrain. First though they still have to catch the trio in front. 90s left with 22km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0024.jpg

On the first and less steep climb it`s Brutt doing the most while Kittel as weakest puncheur has to go out of his saddle already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0026.jpg

Then on the next climb, which is rated a Cat.4 the steepness makes the breakaway suffer. Surprisingly it`s the Brutt having the most problems, while Vaugrenard looks best now.
The peloton though has closed the gap a lot and still 10km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0028.jpg

Good Energy shows most interest and increases the pace behind with the Pokerstars riders just behind. Boonen actually is the first of them while Guarnieri also sits in a very good position just ahead of Bennati.
Then already lots of GC riders who want to avoid a split. Schleck and Phinney in the best position.
Also Madrazo, Spilak in this first bunch of riders with Pluchkin, Amador, Taaramae, Sicard, Tenorio, Uran, Van Heerden, Dekker right behind.

Other riders like Fothen, Intxausti, Kritskiy, Henao Montoya, Vantomme, Keizer, Kohl, Monsalve struggle a bit more in the 2nd half of the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0041.jpg

Vaugrenard being the first rider on the top ahead of Brutt, while Kittel seems to be totally exhausted. Still the one points he gets here will most likely give him the KoM jersey tomorrow even though there still are 5-3-1 points to give in the finish.

Cat.4

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0043.jpg

With 6km to go the breakaway still has a very small gap as the peloton obviously had to slow down a tiny bit to help their sprinters making it over the top in the first positions.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0050.jpg

Only 47 riders are left in the first group with a 2nd peloton of 103 riders might lose time. One of those riders being dropped and the best placed in the GC is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Keizer. He is working now with his team mate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom dropping back to support.
Other mentionable riders in this group are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Kohl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Vantomme

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ulissi
In especially the puncheurs must have been weakly placed on that hill as otherwise they were the last to be dropped normally. Ulissi was also expected to be strong on that kind of finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0061.jpg

With a bit more than 3km to go the breakaway still has a 20s gap. Time for the sprint trains to speed up. Behind you see the desperate fight of the 2nd group to make it back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0070.jpg

Those last hills and the strong sprinters today made it a late catch when Dzamastagic starts his leadout with 2,5km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0072.jpg

Boonen has to go a long way in the wind with 1,8km to go. The stage just did not allow strong leadouts and this is obviously perfect for Bennati and Guarnieri just behind him. Those three look the strongest here even though Howard and Van Heerden are also in the first ten positions while the GC riders might close the gap on the uphill.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0076.jpg

Last view over the dropped riders. Vantomme and Tzortzakis are sprinting alongside the dropped GC riders. They need a strong final push to avoid any gaps.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0079.jpg

Back to the front the riders hit the uphill section. Almost 5% and still 700m left.
It`s Bennati going into the lead now with Guarniere and Boonen equal in 2nd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0082.jpg

300m and it`s still BEnnati while Boonen still looking strong. Guarnieri not able to pass the Belgium.
Behind it`s Phinney ahead of Van Heerden and Howard coming next.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0084.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0085.jpg

Close one. While Boonen might have been strongest after being in the wind for so long, it`s Bennati taking his first Tour de France stage win in 2014.
Guarnieri as 3rd defends the point jersey having 4 points more than Boonen and 10 to Bennati now.

Phinney as 4th as best GC rider getting no bonus seconds though. Van Heerden also inside the top5 with a decent result ahead of GC riders Spilak and Pluchkin.
Howard as last sprinter coming in next.
No gaps within the first group on that hill but what about the dropped riders?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_7_PCM0087.jpg

The hill in the end saw Vantomme and Tzortzakis struggling to close the gap and better puncheurs such as Ulissi, Kreder etc. did probably not give everything.
So we have a bunch of riders losing 67s today including Monsalve, Valls, Marquez, Kohl, König, Pinot, Keizer, Ratiy.
The next group comes in almost 2min behind the winner including Brenes, Levarlet, Suaza or Solis.
GC wise this sees Keizer dropping back to 9th , Zabriskie to 16th and Rolland to 19th as best placed.
