Another flat profile, but it's definitely more challenging than yesterday's: 226km in total, featuring a kinda "classic" profile with several short climbs especially in the first half of the stage.
Yesterday's winner Rowe, as well as Geschke and Farrar should be considered the top-favorites anyway, as they pretty much dominated the bunch sprint. The likes of Caethoven or Sutton/Opie will need to bounce back from that loss today.
It took a while for a 5-men-group being allowed to go clear and it's again a rather dangerous breakaway with no rider having lost any time (except of bonus seconds) on GC-leader Borges so far:
Parra Bustamante, Hansen, Bissinger, Kiserlovski, Myagmarsuren should except a long day at the very front of this race..
The first and only intermediate sprint comes rather late into the race: 35km before finish, to be precisive. The break holds on to 1'50"-gap at this point:
Bustamante takes the sprint ahead of Hansen and Bissinger!
23km remaining and the peloton - mostly led by Azteca, ASDA and Eddie Stobart - keeps pacing, narrowing the gap to 1'10" in the meantime.
And the long stage obviously makes for a very tough race today: the peloton is down to 71 riders, as we've noticed a major split on that final short climb today!
Some sprinters, as well as a few minor GC-contenders suddenly find themselves being dropped and already more than two minutes down on the first peloton:
Sutton, Caethoven, Hawkins, Arango and Dahlberg as the most notable sprinters..
Bochman and Ochoa Quintero as those possible GC-contenders, who already might have lost all ambitions today!
Yap, they definitely did, as the dropped bunch sits up to lose more than 15 minutes eventually!
Back to the front though, where the first peloton pulls back the escaping group at the 10km-mark. With some promising sprinters being dropped, this may become an interesting finish here. ASDA, Azteca and Eddie avoided any damage though.
And so we have almost the same trains like yesterday, with just a different overall picture behind those teams:
Crespo Millan Farrar Bole Edmondson Gaywood Sweeting P. Vd Ploeg Murray Opie Rowe Geschke Beltran Borges Earle Fernandez Golas
Farrar is the first of the top-tier sprinters to kick off his sprint, thanks to a nice leadout with a small advantage on the remaining contenders.
Rowe already on his own at this point, with riders like Bole, Opie, Sweeting and Geschke still in the mix for line honours!
Farrar though appears to be a class of his own yet, opening up a bigger gap now with the final corner ahead!
A few metres behind, it's getting closer again: Bole, Opie, Sweeting and Geschke almost head-to-head, while Rowe struggles now. Race-leader Borges doing fairly better than yesterday..
..he definitely does, but may be out of reach for bonus seconds: Farrar is on the way to the stage-win, while Bole sprinted for a small advantage over Geschke, Sweeting and a "comebacking" Rowe!
Farrar with a dominating win today! His team played it to perfection this time, a well deserved victory for the US-boy.
Bole holds off Geschke and Rowe in a very close decision for further bonifications, while Borges did pretty well as 5th ahead of Sweeting, who still maintains his points-lead by just a point on Farrar!
Borges remains the GC-leader, even though Geschke is now ranked with the same time to jump onto 2nd today. Barta 3rd ahead of Sweeting and Bole. The punchy sprinters did quite well here so far.
No more major changes inside the GC's Top-10, though it must be mentioned, that the breakaway-group couldn't hang on with the bunch eventually. And of course half of the field lost 16 minutes today. So quite a disastrous day for a few GC-contenders and sprinters, too.
