Tour de France - Stage 5
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0001.jpg

It`s the last stage on the Atlantic coast before we are slowly heading towards the Massif Central with the first climbing.
Todays stage though is one of the flattest without any KoM prize giving Vanbilsen the jersey for at least another day.
Favourites are the sprinters obviously.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0003.jpg

Surprise, surprise. 3 breakaway riders again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0007.jpg

The weather is not well today neither and so we have lots of rain and wind all day. Being on those open areas the peloton again suffers strong crosswinds, which leads to lots of riders wanting to be in the first part.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0009.jpg

Bad luck for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Lund. The Norwegian punctures as gets dropped from the breakaway. The duo is waiting for him though and he makes it back quickly.
The peloton seems to ride carefully today on these roads as no team wants their leader to get dropped or even crash. So the gap is up to 8min already with 130km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0012.jpg

The sprinter teams though also don`t want to give this stage away without any effort, so they go a bit faster now with the rain stopping.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0017.jpg

With 55km to go Team ING is taking over keeping Sicard safe. Also many other GC riders are sent to the front by their teams.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0021.jpg

50km and a gap of 2'45 left. This will be hard for the trio today.

Sprint

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0024.jpg

Rain is getting stronger today and combined with a strong wind the peloton is not going all-in today. 40km and the gap went up a bit to 3min.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0028.jpg

Pokerstars with Tom Boonen though is an excellent classic team and so they decide to provide a sprint, which leads to a long line in the peloton seeing many riders having problems to avoid a split.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0030.jpg

This acceleration was also the end of todays breakaway chances as with a bit less than 10km to go the trio is caught. So we will see the next sprint.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0034.jpg

We also get the next split in this first week of the Tour with only 108 riders in hte first group. No GC rider though seems to be dropped.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0038.jpg

So far Tom Boonen and Maxime Vantomme are the sprint winners, while Guarnieri as runner up and Bennati as 3rd both times are still without a win.
Good Energy once more with the strongest train, this time with Malori as first rider creating a gap to most other sprinters.

A bit later the situation changed a bit with Blythe coming to the front and other sprinters closing the gap.

Tom Boonen is 4-5 rows to far behind to make it to the train in time as we have hit the 3km banner already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0052.jpg

Blythe and Rowe do a great job and so only Howard, whose positioning is excellent so far in this race, is able to follow their train, while Vantomme and Zabel have opened a gap to them.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0055.jpg

Still Rowe in front with 1km to go and while Howard sits still behind Guarnieri it`s Vantomme going the long sprint from behind slowly closing the gap and opening one to the next sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0056.jpg

700m and still Rowe in front. What a perfect leadout!
Howard can`t even follow them, which shows the huge pace.
Vantomme has passed him and seems to be the only one challenging Good Energy today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0058.jpg

Guarnieri just has to go into the wind for the last 450m. And with Vantomme already being in the wind for almost 1km this looks to be his stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0060.jpg

Howards still sits in 4th but Phinney, Bennati, Van Heerden and Boonen are closing the gap to him. Kreder, Zabel, Nizzolo and Tzortzakis seem to be at their limit.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0065.jpg

Excellent win for Guarnieri. Perfect team work, which also delivers Rowe a strong 3rd in the end just behind Vantomme in 2nd.
Clearly the strongest sprint train in this race and after two 2nd places, the Italian sprinter finally gets his win being the most consistent sprinter so far, which also gives him the point jersey.

Bennati as 4th just misses his 3rd consecutive podium. Phinney as 5th ahead of Boonen, Howard, Spilak, Pluchkin and Lecuisinier.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_5_PCM0066.jpg

Always the worst scenario to crash late. But being a GC rider crashing 700m to the line is awful. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Keizer though goes down and as he were in the front of the peloton it`s quite a miracle that only 3 riders couldn`t not go around and actually those three were late in the peloton.
Those are

Keizer got up the quickest and sprints to avoid a time gap and indeed the judges were gracious and with the help of Lotto`s Libert he is counted the same time, while the other crash victims are losing more than 4min!
