The 3rd stage leads us further West in the Bretagne and is expected to be the first chance for the sprinters. It also has some speciality as we hit those gravel roads known from Tro Bro Leon making the stage a really unique Tour de France experience. And just like yesterday the riders probably have to take care of the wind even though the forecast seems to be a bit better for the riders this time.
Top favourite is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Boonen after yesterdays performance. As only sprinter he was able to challenge the GC riders on the final climb, while his biggest opponents i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bennati, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Guarnieri and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Van Heerden at least stayed with the best.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0003.jpg

Quite early three riders were able to create a gap and form the break of the day. Those are three time trialists in

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Scheunemann

This was also the order at the first Cat.4.

A lot of Pokerstars riders in front alongside 1-2 riders from Lotto, ING, Good Energy and Quickstep.
Mentionable that it`s some strong riders sent to work such as Froome, Rabottini, Diggle, Ivars or yesterdays winner Vanbilsen.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0014.jpg

2nd and last KoM sprint of the day and again Kittel takes it making it 10 points now moving him up the the shared 1st with Vanbilsen, who will keep the jersey though.

With 120km to go and almost 8min for the breakaway it`s in especially Lotto highering the effort behind. 3 of their riders are working now. Also three riders from Pokerstars and still Vanbilsen, Froome for Quickstep and Rabottini for Good Energy. So it`s actually only Aker not helping out.
Also the clouds are getting darker and it will start to rain soon, which is obviously not the best with the gravel roads soon to come.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0023.jpg

But already before we have the first crash of the race. It`s a Santander rider but the team will be happy to see Gonzalez Salas down instead of their leading duo. He is also the only non climber in their huge mountain squad here and was mainly nominated for the TTT. He though gets up again to continue the race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0025.jpg

At the sprint the rain has indeed started and while there was some competition at the mountain sprints, the trio does not care about the bonus seconds at all.

Sprint

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0027.jpg

The wet roads see the next crash victim. This time a bit more serious as Oscar Solis goes down. He is an excellent climber and is supposed to help Taaramae in the mountains. So it`s good to see that he gets up quickly.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0029.jpg

It took him 17km but with the start of the first gravel section, which actually become quite muddy now, he makes it back with 50km to go. Still a gap a bit under 3min for the breakaway.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0031.jpg

It`s Team ING coming to the front now trying to avoid any crashes by race leader Sicard. Those conditions on these roads are not very good obviously.

Christensen of the B&O team was the next rider to hit the road.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0042.jpg

19km to go and still 67s for the trio. And good to see the sunshine for the first time today. The final should be dry then.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0044.jpg

Under the 10km banner the group is almost caught. Kittel tries it and goes solo.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0047.jpg

But no chance the four sprinter teams are in full control of the situation catchin the duo and a bit later also Kittel with 7km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0049.jpg

Great sprint preperations here with four teams willing to create their own train. Actually all four teams, who already did a lot of work today and so they all want that win. Aker without having done a thing today still in a good position as Van Heerden found Bennati`s wheel, which is at the moment the best it seems.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0064.jpg

Lotto still doing great with Von Hoff showing a strong leadout. But it`s the Good Energy train now speeding up, which is not a surprise as on paper, they should have the best possible train for Guarnieri. Also Nizzolo has closed the gap being behind Zabel on the Quickstep train.
2,6km only left and still all trains with 2 leadouts left.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0066.jpg

Powerful sprint by Luke Rowe now with Guarnieri behind him. The other trains are somewhat disturbed after 1-2 corners.
The first Lotto rider is Croket actualy with Bennati having a small gap to him. Also Vantomme has lost the wheel being behind Bennati now with the Pokerstars train a bit blocked on the left side of the road.
This also counts for Tzortzakis, Howard and Nizzolo behind them while Zabel is having Vantomme`s wheel and Van Heerden going the long way alone on the right side.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0072.jpg

Rowe still in the lead. Behind him Guarnieri and also Bennati has found his wheel now. Vantomme having a tiny gap while Zabel is starting the sprint.
Van Heerden seems to struggle getting any faster as he started far too early after losing Bennati`s wheel earlier.
All other sprinters look beaten as it`s not Boonen on the left but Dzamastagic.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0079.jpg

One rare difficulty on the final kilometer now as the riders have to go around a roundabout. Only 600m left and Guarnieri had waited until this point to make his move past Rowe after a brilliant leadout.
Vantomme passing Bennati now having Zabel and Van Heerden right behind him.
Then 2-3 leadout riders behind them before the next group of sprinters around Boonen probably won`t make it back in time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0085.jpg

It will be a duel between Guarnieri and Vantomme. Bennati can`t challenge them today and Zabel and Van Heerden might have a bit too much of a gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0087.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_3_PCM0088.jpg

This was a close one until the end. But the photo finish proved that it`s Maxime Vantomme making it two in a row for his Quickstep team. What a start for the wildcard team.
Guarnieri couldn`t deliver his team a win here after this great leadout and has to live with that 2nd. Bennati in the end found some more energy and comes in 3rd ahead of young talent Zabel with an excellent performance today.
Van Heerden as 5th also very strong seeing how long he sprinted today.

Rowe as 6th also strong ahead of Tzortzakis, Boonen, Dzamastagic and Howard as next.

Except for some helpers, who got dropped in the end as also Gonzalez Salas, who never made it back after his crash, no riders lost time. Most notable might be Brändle.
