Tour de France - Stage 2
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0001.jpg

It`s the first road stage in this Tour and despite having a flat rating it clearly isn`t flat. In especially the final is far from flat with some hills and a very steep last 3km, which might actually be something for the puncheurs. Also the GC riders need to be careful as you can easily lose time here when missing the right moment.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0002.jpg

195 riders at the start including 3 control riders obviously. Fiedler in yellow after the TTT while Phinney is having the U25 lead, which might be an interesting one to follow as his biggest opponent there is Justo Tenorio. All others like Pinot or Monsalve are big outside favourites only.
Regarding the point and KoM jersey, todays stage will bring the first leader as yesterday did not reward any points yet.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0005.jpg

Wildcard team Quickstep gets the award for first attack of the race. It`s Belgium cobbled talent i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Vanbilsen followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Chtioui and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Allonca.
Quickly the trio is gaining time and creating a nice gap as no other team/rider seems interested.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0010.jpg

ING has the obvious task to control the peloton with German time trialist Fiedler leading the GC. Helping out though are the sprinter teams Aker (Van Heerden), Good Energy (Guarnieri) and Pokerstars (Boonen). Obviously they expect to have a chance today no matter that harder finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0016.jpg

With 50km to go the gap is down to 3min. The sprinter teams take a rest though and so it`s only ING still working.
Best placed in the break is Chtioui with +1'05.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0019.jpg

First sprint of the race and it`s the Morrocan taking 6 bonus seconds ahead of Vanbilsen and Allonca.

Sprint

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Vanbilsen4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Allonca2

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0024.jpg

As said in the preview. The first few stages are in the Bretagne going along the coast. This usually means high wind speeds possible. This also happens today and with classic team Pokerstars as also Lotto for Bennati really increased the pace now, many riders are dropped. Only 125 riders are left in the first group.
Biggest names behind are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Vanendert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Kreder
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bilbao
So some riders, who might have been expected to show something today. That said, no GC rider behind is probably better news for most managers.

But more riders need to be careful as the peloton is very long now and following riders should really move forward to avoid being dropped next:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ulissi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Froome
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Demare
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Tzortzakis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Howard
So quite a surprise to see those top puncheurs being in a bad position with that finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0035.jpg

A bit less than 30km most sprinter teams really go fast now having already more than 2min to the dropped riders with a bit less to the breakaway.
This fast pace sees more riders dropped:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Froome
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Brenes
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Navarro
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Solis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Levarlet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Anacona

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0047.jpg

With ~15km to go the peloton is down to 51 riders only! Really windy today and within the newest dropped riders are most sprinters as we have hit the hills.
But also some GC riders are dropped this time. Biggest victims surely are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Kohl and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti alongside
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ratiy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Pinot
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png König
Most of these riders are pacing behind now trying to limit their loss, that surely will be there.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0063.jpg

What a show of strength here by Pokerstars. 5 riders are still going fast as Tom Boonen is still inside the peloton obviously feeling strong today.
Other sprinters still here are Bennati, Guarnieri and Van Heerden. So pretty much the four strongest.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0065.jpg

We mustn`t forget the breakaway though as they still have a 1min lead going up the penultimate hill, which is also the KoM decision.
Vanbilsen having a small gap to the next with Allonca clearly being the weakest of them.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0067.jpg

The young Belgium also takes the points on top.
Behind still Pokerstars with 2 riders ahead of Tom Boonen in an excellent position.
Also in the first rows Sicard, Pluchkin, Taaramae, Amador, Spilak, Dekker, Tenorio. So the GC riders are already showing themselves on the first real stage.

Cat.4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Vanbilsen5
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Chtioui3

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0073.jpg

Last kilometer and Vanbilsen might have this one in his pocket. His former companions are a bit behind and the peloton is just around the corner closing and being much faster.
Last 1,2km though are steep and this is surely an advantege for the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0075.jpg

The 51 riders accelerate around the corner and already start their sprint with Boonen being in an excellent position.
Several GC riders behind him: Pluchkin, Sicard, Spilak, Dekker, Amador and Taaramae. Then already a very small gap to the next led by Kritskiy, Tenorio, Phinney, Uran, Keizer and a bit later Monsalve, Schleck, Madrazo.
Even worse placed Marquez, Henao Montoya, Scarponi, Keinath, Fiedler.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0089.jpg

Boonen has reached Allonca and Chtioui and also Vanbilsen looks totally exhausted.
Behind some riders clearly dropped such as Bennati or Fiedler. So we will definitely see a new GC leader after today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0091.jpg

Going around the last corner Boonen is struggling. Dekker goes past him and also Pluchkin, Sicard and Amador are soon to go around. Behind him Taaramae and Spilak.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0096.jpg

Lucky Vanbilsen that the last 200m was a bit more flat again and it wasn`t far after this corner. So the young Belgium with a huge win here. He is even rewarded a 11s gap, which shows that the jury is going to reward gaps here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0098.jpg

Dekker proves his sprint skills once more to take 2nd ahead of Pluchkin. Both with nice bonus seconds here.
Boonen hangs on to 4th, which is a strong result on that terrain and gives him a first advantage in the point competition against other sprinters.
Sicard as 5th will take over the GC lead from his team mate Fiedler.
Also in this group Spilak, Taaramae, Chtioui, Kolesnikov, Dzamastagic, Phinney, Wallays, Amador, Alonca and Kritskiy.
So all others are losing time including half of the GC riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0099.jpg

And the gap is not that small actually. Andy Schleck tries to close it with a very strong sprint but he still is losing 55s today to the others.
Behind him even another 8s gap including the other dropped riders on that climb like the Santander duo Tenorio/Madrazo, Uran, Keizer, Fothen, Monsalve, Keinath, Marquez, Henao Montoya, Scarponi.
So while some have surely expected a small loss here, for others it`s a huge disappointment, which in especially counts for Vesuvio and Santander.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20de%20France/mg2014_tdf_2_PCM0101.jpg

Losing even more and actually 3'06 to Vanbilsen are the dropped riders earlier in the wind like Kohl, König, Intxausti. Really bad luck for them.

So what a first stage of this Tour de France with already quite a few gaps.
