The 42.5km timetrial around Grenoble concludes this year's Dauphine and given the length of this parcours, we may see some notable changes in the GC.
We've witnessed an outstanding fight for yellow with Taaramäe taking the race-lead by just 3 seconds on Col du Granon yesterday.. will Spilak put up a huge timetrial to re-take his lead?
But first let's focus on the two best TT-specialists outside, who have just one target today: the stage-win! Cornu unsuprisingly sets an early best time..
..and no further surprise to see prologue-winner Coppel beating him by just 10 seconds though! Will this be the winning time or will the also strong GC-contenders have more energy left?
Just for the better overview, this is the provisional results at the finish as we now go into the GC's Top-15..
Faiers (15th) fights against Kunshin to jump onto 14th in GC... he does quite well today:
+ 29" on Coppel as provisional 3rd! Kunshin is almost two minutes slower, but holds off Faiers in the GC by half a minute to defend his spot there!
Bibby (12th) has no realistic chance to attack the Top-11, but credit where credit is due: he rode a strong Dauphine and also does very well today..
+ 20" as new 3rd behind Coppel and Cornu!
We will now focus on the GC's Top-11 and take a look at the two splits first... coming off some problems in the mountains, Gesink has still a shot at the Top-5 if he delivers big time today. Ain't looking too bad, as he's the fastest of all at the first split (14km)!
Rider GC Split #1 Split #2 Finish Spilak- + 0'23 Taaramäe+ 3 + 0'08 Dekker+ 3'34 + 0'12 Rujano+ 3'51 + 0'59 Sicard+ 5'30 + 0'34 Sanchez Gil+ 6'11 + 0'21 Martins.t. + 0'38 Gesink+ 7'04 - Pinot+ 10'34 + 1'29 Keinath+ 11'12 + 0'40 Monsalve+ 11'53 + 1'04
Spilak doesn't seem to be able to challenge Taaramäe for the overall win, as he's already losing 15 seconds there.. also Dekker looks comfortable to defend his podium, while this fight for the Top-5 may well become very close with Gesink and also Sanchez Gil riding strong so for!
Keinath with a good performance as well and he's already a minute faster than Pinot at the second split (29km).. this should be enough to claim his 9th place in GC, while Pinot at least looks good enough to hold off Monsalve..
Gesink still in the lead at this second split, he's 32" faster than previously leading Coppel, by the way! The Frenchman seems to fight for a Top-5-result only.
Rider GC Split #1 Split #2 Finish Spilak- + 0'23 + 0'50 Taaramäe+ 3 + 0'08 + 0'15 Dekker+ 3'34 + 0'12 + 0'21 Rujano+ 3'51 + 0'59 + 1'58 Sicard+ 5'30 + 0'34 + 0'50 Sanchez Gil+ 6'11 + 0'21 + 0'42 Martins.t. + 0'38 + 1'09 Gesink+ 7'04 - - Pinot+ 10'34 + 1'29 + 3'03 Keinath+ 11'12 + 0'40 + 1'21 Monsalve+ 11'53 + 1'04 + 2'35
Yap, Spilak doesn't stand a chance to attack Taaramäe, who's on the way to be the only real threat for Gesink today! Dekker still going strong, while Rujano needs to fight hard to defend his 4th in GC! Gesink already overtaking Martin in the provisional GC at this point..
The first Top-11 riders cross the finish line.. Monsalve just misses the GC's Top-10 today by 20 seconds on Pinot, while Keinath will go up to 9th as already to bee seen at the splits.
Sanchez Gil finishes 1" faster than Coppel for the provisional lead on the stage! Quite a strong showing to hold off Martin (both with the same time prior to the stage) in the GC.
Will he be able to attack Sicard (41" advantage in GC).. and let's not forget Gesink, who was just 53" down in the GC as 8th...
Sicard comes in 33" slower than Sanchez, so quite close, but enough for the Frenchman to hold off Sanchez...
Gesink crushes this best time from Sanchez by 58" though! This will be a very close decision for the Top-5 in GC!
Dekker comes in as new 2nd, losing 29" on Gesink.. and he sends quite a message to Rujano, who wasn't even close to be of any danger for Dekker and his podium-spot.. Rujano though comes in 2'43" behind Gesink and may even fear his 4th..
The split-times already told the story for Spilak, who eventually loses 1'09" on Gesink here.. this won't be enough to take the yellow..
..as Taaramäe finishes the stage as 2nd behind Gesink, just 19" slower that a strong riding Dutchman!
Rider GC Split #1 Split #2 Finish Spilak- + 0'23 + 0'50 + 1'09 Taaramäe+ 3 + 0'08 + 0'15 + 0'19 Dekker+ 3'34 + 0'12 + 0'21 + 0'29 Rujano+ 3'51 + 0'59 + 1'58 + 2'43 Sicard+ 5'30 + 0'34 + 0'50 + 1'31 Sanchez Gil+ 6'11 + 0'21 + 0'42 + 0'58 Martins.t. + 0'38 + 1'09 + 1'47 Gesink+ 7'04 - - - Pinot+ 10'34 + 1'29 + 3'03 + 4'11 Keinath+ 11'12 + 0'40 + 1'21 + 1'52 Monsalve+ 11'53 + 1'04 + 2'35 + 3'12
And so it's a well deserved victory for Taaramäe, who wins the Dauphine 2014 by 53" on Spilak, who has to settle for another runner-up after last year and his two titles the season before.
This battle between those two was truly impressive though and maybe one of the most thrilling duels we've seen so far this season. Heads up to both for this entertaining race.
Dekker completes the podium and Rujano managed to hold off the stronger TTlers to maintain his 4th in GC! But who will be 5th?
Sicard eventually held off Gesink by 3 seconds to secure his Top-5! An unlucky, but still strong performing Sanchez Gil goes for 7th in GC, beating stronger climbers like Martin and Keinath.. another close decision there between Sicard, Gesink and Sanchez!
As said before, Pinot rounds up the Top-10 ahead of Monsalve and Bibby, with the likes of vd Hugenhaben, Kunshin and Faiers completing the Top-15.. Costa (18th) wasn't much of a factor here, he clearly missed those hilly stages for a better GC-result.
Taaramäe with the points jersey, Spilak polka dot, Pinot grabbed the white one and Bouygues rode a strong timetrial to win the team's competition quite comfortable eventually.
