35 degrees, 203km of panflat roads.. many sprinters in the mix for the win.. let's get it on..
The break of the day is quickly found, as 9 riders were allowed to stay clear from the bunch early into the race:
Lehtinen, Verbiest, Guozhang, Mas, Mayho, Jiang, Edmondson, Sabido, Zafferani
So Edmondson in particular is an already well known name in such breakaways - like grabbing a podium late in May at the Bucks County Classic..
Azteca and ASDA would start chasing when the breakaway established a 5-minutes-gap..
120km remaining: 4'34"...
75km: 2'44"...
46km: 1'45"...
42km: Paiani attacks the peloton, trying to bridge this gap for a solo-attempt!
Empty-handed though, as he's reeled in by the bunch 20km before finish.. the early escapees still hold on to gap..
18km: 50"...
9km: Wurf tries the same like Paiani, but opposing to the latter, the Aussie is soon to close up to the leading group.
The peloton is still led by Azteca and ASDA, which share the heavy workload on the pursuit. The gap is down to 40" in the meantime.
And almost closed as we already enter the final 2.5km! With the leading group still fighting to stay in the mix for the victory, we may take a look at how the sprinters did position themselves for the sprint:
Gaywood Murray Rowe Sutton Caethoven Debusschere Cano Manarelli Peeters Guillén Crespo Hawkins Gudsell Forero Haedo Duque Drapac Sinner
Just as the bunch would catch up to the 10-men-group, Wurf would launch another attack! Unsurprisingly, it looks like he will at least drop the early escapees easily.. but can he hold off the bunch sprint as well?
Wurf enters the final kilometre with still a gap on the peloton, which now swallows the escaping group:
moving forward now - the Azteca duo with Drapac at their wheel.. also Serebriakov finally catching Guillén's wheel, now kicking off his sprint, it seems..
Wurf though holds on to still the same gap.. too late for now kicking Haedo? Behind him it's Drapac, Caethoven, Sutton and Forero..
Rowe is yet to kick off his sprint, but the ASDA-duo struggles to keep the other's pace..
moving forward to their left: Peeters, Serebriakov and Gudsell!
Gudsell though drops as fast as he moved forward... behind a still leading Wurf, it looks like a battle between Haedo, Caethoven, Drapac and Serebriakov on the other side of the wide road..
..could become a very close finish here...
..not in Wurf's eyes though.. a quite confident Aussie celebrates a few metres prior to the line, with the sprinters closing up with top-speed now..
..but his celebration is as perfect timed as his solo-attack 10km before finish: Wurf claims the Rutas de America-victory, beating the top-sprinters in a thrilling finish! Well done by him..
..bad luck for those, who needed only five metres more of this road to overtake Wurf: Haedo clear 2nd ahead of Caethoven and Serebriakov (a very close decision between those two).
Drapac completes the Top-5 ahead of compatriot Sutton, who's teammate Matthews (21st) obviously hadn't his best day. So good news for Risa, that Sutton beats sprinters like Guillén, Forero, Peeters and late-accelerating Clavero..
Rowe completely lost his speed to finish 11th ahead of Manarelli, Gudsell and Sinner. Definitely disappointing for Rowe, as his team spend most of the day at the front of the peloton (which might have cost his train the power to compete with the fastest today).
