Vuelta Guatemala - Stage 5
TheManxMissile
i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0001_zps053ef4f2.png

Welcome to stage 5! Quite a bit of steep climing early on but a long downhill should bring things back together. Note the Cat. 3 climb just 12km from the finish, should be a perfect place to attack. With that in mind the days favorites are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge and based on yesterdays sprint i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Marentes.

It's a slow uphill start and after three kilometers i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Kern, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Schoffmann and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Ito are the first to breakaway.
After 6km we see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Rake and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Sobal also attack away. It will take some time for them to reach the leading trio but nevertheless they do join up to form the days break.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0004_zps5f754683.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Postlberger takes a tumble at the 20km mark. But he bounces well and is soon back into the slow moving peloton without serious injury.

At the 34km mark the days first IS is passed, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Kern takes the points ahead of Ito and Sobal. The peloton is already 5'25 behind the leading quintet.

48km into the day and we pass the races highest summit, the Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan! Kern takes the honors ahead of Ito and Sobal again. The gap to the peloton is 6'00 as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Bakhin takes 4pts for his KoM jersey.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0005_zps4c1d622b.png

At 63km IS2 is won by Ito over Kern and Sobal. 68km KoM2 is won by Ito over Schoffmann and Rake. The gap to the peloton is now 7'07 and starting to be pulled back in. From here we enter the long downhill run and a chance to breathe for the rider.

Unfortunately i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rodas takes a tumble! The In-n-Out leader takes his time to get up and then no teammates come to help. It's the end of his day and probably the end of any GC ambitions he had.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0006_zps8a3f399d.png

We pass through the 20km to go mark! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Team Chiquita-Universal have been forcing the chase and have reduced the gap to just 2'12.

15km to go and we hit that final Cat. 3 climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Sauber-Petronas hit the front to discourage attacks and keep race leader Zoidl safe.

13km to go and things explode! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fahnert, yesterdays great attacker, is back at it and forces a split at the head of the peloton! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Firsanov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Wurf, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Marentes and Parisien and race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zoidl are the riders to get a gap. It's not much but it's very very dangerous moments.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0007_zps6bad924e.png

Over the summit and now mostly flat 12km to the line. Rake leads Schoffmann and Ito over the line. 1'32 behind is Sobal, Kern and now Mendes. That's two Bank of Ireland riders to work together. Only 20" behind that E2 trio is E3. This group contains Marentes, Zoidl, Kolobnev, Firsanov, Fahnert, Parisien, Wurf and now also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Duggan. 30" behind that is a trio of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Passalacqua, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Haga and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schafer. 20" behind them is the peloton, still containing well over 100 riders. Simply put there are riders pushing hard all over the place!

Through 11km the Zoidl group, E3, is joined by the Haga group, E4. They continue to chase the Mendes group, E2, who chase the lead trio. Riders are working hard everywhere, it's hard to keep track.

9km to go and Rake attacks the lead trio! This has to be his bid to win the stage! Sobal continues to work hard for Mendes, but the Portugese leader is visably suffering behind his teammate. Passalacqua pushes E3 hard and actually cracks Haga off the back! The second place GC man is swallowed by the peloton and his teammates should keep him safe.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0008_zpsc315227b.png

With 6km to go Ito and Schoffmann cooperate well to pull Rake back. The Norwegian gave it a good try but you feel he's given too much to challenge again now. Meanwhile the Zoild group, E3, has been pulled into the peloton. This negates a serious chunk of the days GC battle, leaving only Mendes able now to gain time.

The next few kilometers settles down. The trio continue to work together to win the day. Sobal continues to push for Mendes. The peloton chases. A chance to breathe before the sprints for the line...

And with that Schoffmann launches first under the 1km Kite! It's a great acceleration neither Ito nor Rake can match...

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0009_zpse653550f.png

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%205/PCM0010_zps908d9b4e.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Schoffmann wins Stage 5! He timed that sprint perfectly. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Ito and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Rake tried hard and finish 2nd and 3rd for reward.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Sobal leads the chase trio in 4th. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes just edges out i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Kern for 5th, perhaps he should have done more.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev wins the peloton sprint for 7th. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Agnoli is 8th, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Moreno 9th and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Kulhavy rounds off the Top10.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rodas ultimately looses 5'49. And we have our first retirement in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Gert Rajala, although no reason can be given he just threw in the towel.
