Vuelta Guatemala - Stage 2
TheManxMissile
i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0006_zps22915c58.png

Stage 2 and one of the trickier hilly stages. Tough slopes and long climbs could cause havoc in the peloton today. The top favorites are: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Duggan, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter

After only 2km we have thdays first attackers. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Sutherland goes first, quickly joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Wurf and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Bakhin. They pull out a slender 30" gap

Various other riders try and join the move over the first decent and climb but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png ONCE and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Nutresa block all the moves.

18km into the ride and the days first KoM is taken by Bakhin ahead of Wurf and a slightly gapped Sutherland, who will rejoin on the decent with no issues. The peloton drops to 3'30 back.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0009_zpse23d0590.png

The first IS sprint comes after 46km of riding, and it's Bakhin who leads the way ahead of Wurf and Sutherland. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Nutresa are forcing the pace and have cut the gap to 2'37.

Ten kilometeres later and Sutherland has to relax and let the better climbers go ahead. He takes third at the KoM point and is caught soon after. Up ahead Bakharin again outplays Wurf to take the KoM points. The peloton is still closing, now down to 2'20

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0010_zps74486b18.png

With 40km to go Wurf and Bakharin are caught by the hard charging Nutresa! This sets up race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Caethoven to take the final IS sprint, ahead of teammate Golas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Salleh.

Instantly after the sprint i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Ardilla makes a move! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Schoffmann, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Kulhavy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Moreno counter the moce. But Nutresa move quickly the prevent the dangerous group from progressing.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0012_zpsb26354fc.png

29km to go and finally Schoffmann, Kulhavy and Moreno get a tangible gap following multiple attacks. They pull a small advantage towards the KoM point, which is taken by Kulhavy ahead of Moreno. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Valencia is 3rd at the line, just passing Schoffmann, and 19" behind the leading duo. But that gap lasts barely 300m before it's all together again at the front.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0016_zps2042e3c6.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Nutresa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png work incredibly hard on the front to block out any attacks and keep the group stretched, all without hurting race leader Caethoven who is looking strong today.

Finally, with 7km to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter can create a real gap! He presses hard and pulls away and away, with Nutresa looking cooked after a hard days work.

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0020_zps32950752.png

3km to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Montaguti, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Marentes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Sayar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes get away from the peloton, it's a strong group but the gap to Schurter is 45"....

1.5km to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Kulhavy joins the E2 group, but Schurter knows he has the win. It's all a question of gaps now....

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0021_zpscd55bea5.png

1km to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo jumps the peloton to take a small advantage. Ahead it's a very even sprint for second...

i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag175/themanxmissile/Guatemala%20Stage%202/PCM0022_zps5274ed4d.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Nino Schurter wins Stage 2! He keeps a slim 12" gap ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Marentes in second and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Bugge in third. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Kolobnev might feel dissapointed in 4th, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Sayar 5th and a really dissapointed i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes 6th. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Montaguti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Kulhavy finish the group in 7th and 8th. 52" behind the winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo shows good signs in 9th ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Dyball in 10th.
