Stage 3 is a 191,1 kilometer long stage from Hoogerheide to Aalter. The first two stages has seen two different winners. Will a third one win today? Gerald Ciolek will for sure be wanting a stage win.
Lots of attacking early on today, but in the end, just five riders are allowed to go: Vojtech Hacecky, Faycal Hamza, Freddy Johansson, Jay Sparling and Michael Boros. All the riders are 28 seconds after Goss in the GC, except for Boros who took bonus seconds on the first stage. He is just 18 seconds behind in the GC and is leading the youth classification. It must be said to be a surprise that he is allowed to be in the breakaway today.
Intermediate Sprint 1
1. (6) Hacecky
2. (4) Johansson
3. (2) Sparling
The breakaway is not allowed a very big gap. As they reach the feeding zone, it's down to 3'44", with Quickstep, Puma and Belarusbank doing the work in the peloton. Meanwhile, Oleksandr Golovash and Kasper Klostegaard goes down in a crash.
Having maintained a steady pace, the breakaway has a big enough gap to fight it out for the second intermediate sprint of the day before being caught.
Intermediate Sprint 2
1. (6) Hacecky
2. (4) Johansson
3. (2) Boros
There is in fact quite a lot of wind today, and not everyone can stay with the peloton. The biggest name losing contact is Oscar Gatto, as the number of riders in the peloton is down to just 78 with 38 kilometers to go. But luckily for them, everything comes back together as the pace comes to a stop when the break is caught just a few kilometers later.
There is surprisingly little interest for the last intermediate sprint. Van Asbroeck leads Vantomme over the line, securing easy bonus seconds.
Intermediate Sprint 3
1. (6) Van Asbroeck
2. (4) Vantomme
3. (2) Kastrantas
Venchi and Heineken moves to the front and increases the pace, causing a huge split to emerge in the peloton with 20 kilometers to go! As many as 94 riders lose contact with the peloton. Among them are Richeze, Haussler and Lavoine, as well as Boros (8th GC) and Manfred (9th GC).
More drama here as Roman Maksimov crashes! Luckily for him, he is able to fight back, as the peloton once again comes to a stop with 8 kilometers to go.
Up front, things are very unorganized. Heineken is the only team able to organize something close to a lead-out. Gaudin is leading out Holloway. Vantomme, Goss and Greipel follows on the American's wheel, while Venchi and Puma struggles to organize a train behind.
Coming into the final three kilometers, Claudio Corioni is the first to launch his sprint, although not being in contact with his captain, Michael Van Stayen. It might be an idea not to launch too early here, though, as the wind is coming from straight ahead.
But with Gaudin fading, Holloway sees the need to do just that. He flies past Corioni with 2 kilometers to go. Vantomme is clinging to his wheel.
Riders are everywhere now, as Vantomme moves into the lead. Here's an overview of the situation:
Vantomme Holloway Goss Grillo Greipel Van Stayen Corioni Kankovsky Ciolek Giaux
Vantomme is pulling out the gap and is looking good for another stage win! Ciolek is however moving even faster, and is storming past Greipel to move into 4th position.
With the 1st position seemingly sealed, it's a fight for 2nd place on the last few meters. Holloway and Goss is fading, while Van Stayen is moving out behind Ciolek trying to get ahead.
Maxime Vantomme takes the win! Great day for him and his teammates as he takes his 2nd stage win in a row and the leaders jersey.
Ciolek keeps Van Stayen behind him to take 2nd. Holloway comes in as 4th and Goss 5th. They might have launched their sprint a bit early today. Behind, Cavendish sprints to 6th, followed by Tolleson, Van Avermaet, Thomas and Vedel Kvist.
The Haussler-group comes in 1'48" behind.
