The Rider

Some different names are in the list of favourites today as this is the hilliest stage in the whole race, however, the sprinters should cope well with the terrain. Although the final few meters to the finish are uphill at around 7%.

Plenty of action early on.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Barclay, 7th @ '14, tried to get into the break of the day, he was a bit too high up in GC to be allowed to get away.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c2_zps3e6533d8.jpg

A four man break did get away:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.pngGhafari@ '20
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.pngIglinskiy@ '32
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.pngRedecker@ '32
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.pngWohler@ 6'25

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Ghafari, 10th in GC, does really well to sneak into the break of the day. With bonifications he could rise still more yet.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c3_zpscf0b5064.jpg

Results from intermediate sprints:

80 KM to go:

1st - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.pngIglinskiy
2st - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.pngGhafari
3rd - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.pngRedecker

40 KM to go:

1st - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.pngRedecker
2st - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.pngGhafari
3rd - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.pngIglinskiy

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Redecker and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Ghafari each take '8 seconds of bonuses. Meaning the Namibian moves, provisionally, into the white jersey and the Iranian moves to within '12 of the GC lead.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c4_zps8ad20c67.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Oz Cycling Project driving along the peloton with 15 KM to go. The break are proving really difficult to bring back today, with 6 KM to go they still have '50 ahead of the peloton.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c5_zps203dd014.jpg
The break can still make it: with 3 KM to go the break have '30.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinskiy leads the break towards the final, at this point the break look like they may hold off the sprinters and contest the win.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c6_zps8302a5c2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Meiji - Cannondale have to launch their final effort very early if they are to catch the break. With well over 500 meters to go:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.pngNapolitano
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.pngLo Cicero
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.pngVantomme
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.pngGreipel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.pngCiolek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.pngLavoine
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.pngGoss
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.pngVanderbiest
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.pngVan Poppel

The break still lead, which is great news especially for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Ghafari. However, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinskiy has been left to do all the riding and he doesn't want to drag the three passengers to the line. The break slow up.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c7_zps0792e067.jpg
300 meters to go.

The break begin to play cat and mouse at the wrong time and are caught, they threw that one away. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel looks to catch everyone off guard by launching his final sprint a bit early.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c8_zpsade5ba5a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Greipel, did go too early, he is caught and passed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel, for the first time here, coming up fast.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c9_zps7b01f195.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel comes level with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest. These three will decide the stage today with little over 100 meters left. Whoever, has most left for the 7% hill, traversing the last few meters, will take the stage.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c10_zpsaad5d9d7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest edges into the lead.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c11_zpsf9f123aa.jpg

Stage win i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest! After multiple podium finishes the Frenchman finally takes a stage win here. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel edges out i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek for second place on the stage.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest will move back into the race lead ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Ciolek by '8 seconds and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Lo Cicero by '12 seconds ahead of the final stage.

i1374.photobucket.com/albums/ag411/ramblingman92/c12_zps4cf99b99.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Cavendish, 4th finished very quickly and almost caught the leading trio. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Goss and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Hoffman round out the top 6 with a ways back to the rest.

In the final the lead group split into a group of 69 riders, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Barclay was the only rider up there in the GC to miss out.

- i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png SB Park is the first rider to abandon.

With just one stage to go it looks like only four riders are in contention for the GC win.
