just bought the game on sale, after a few years break. I played a stage, and got used to the new 3d interface, and now I want to start a custom career. I'm using the pcmdaily database.
Any advice on how to setup my Custom team? I want to make it a primarily Danish/Scandinavian team, and would like to have a competitive, but not too overpowered team.
Do I just pick whatever riders I fancy and go, or do you have any advice on how to get the most enjoyment of the game. I'll propably only want to play a season or two, unless the sim engine has gotten better over the last few years (I've yet to try it).
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Depends on what type of team you want and in what division you want it to be. Would be nice to know these two, as I'd be able to write couple of things/"advices" then.
I'd say sticking to a realistic team would be good.
It doesn't really matter which level, at least don't overpower your team(a team with Cancellara + Froome + Kristoff wouldn't be fun for example, you'd win everything). Just try to stick with a few nationalities and don't choose too many leaders.
Signing some scouted riders(you can sign some in the custom team screen) is a nice idea too, it's fun to see them developing into useful riders or even leaders(just don't pick only future greats, that's overpowering your team too )
Oh, and picking a few riders you like is always a fun idea of course, it helps keeping motivation for the career and it's awesome to win with a rider you like.

I havent really decided on division or anything, except no world tour team.
A couple of years Ago I tried putting together a sort-of realistic Carlsberg team. Thinking of just doing that again, Except I made it continental last time, which wasn't that much fun and took a little too long to rise to the top.... Thinking of just taking the middle road this time and starting with a decent Pro Conti team...

yeah, but as I recall I found the economics hard to control. Still thinking as I reinstall the pcmdaily package. It seemed that installing the 1.3 patch after installing that was a bad idea

If you want a Danish Pro Conti team you could build it around Breschel and the Sorensens... Cort Nielsen, Ebsen, Norman Hansen, Klostergaard, Steensen and a few regens would make a nice team imo considering Nicky and Breschel are good on cobbles, The Sorensens should be in 1 team and Cort Nielsen is so all-round he could help eiter C.A. or Breschel...

I am just playing a career with quite good Pro Conti team (and I play most with PCT teams, so yeah), so here are few tips. Note, these are just how I like to play PCM, opinions from other guys are probably different.
- Do not go too much in-depth and do not have like 20 guys with 70+ AVG rating. I, personally, do not like to have more than 8 of those. It's a (quite strong) PCT team after all.
- Do not go too much all-around, as it's PCT team (once again). Focus on 2, most 3 "specialities". F.e., try not to have guys with 75+ in all - COB, TT, MO, HIL, SP. You can have a good sprinter, climber and a puncheur, or cobbler, tter and a sprinter, but never all of those. It would be OP.
- Try not to have guys that have any stat (except FTR maybe) higher than 77. Also try not to have more than 3 guys that have 75+ in any stat (connected to the "tip" above).
- Don't go mad with nationalities (focus on few, not billion of them) and try to stay realistic in terms of getting OP talents and high-waged PT guys!
- Get as much riders you like as you can get. This will keep your career going for a longer period.
Hey guys, any tips for building a world tour custom team (with the aim of winning grand tours or top 3 finishes over there and also for cobbles) without being OP?
When I've built the team, I had in mind not to pick guys like Froome, Contador, Quintana (not even guys like Talansky, Tejay), Cavendish, Kittel, Vanmarcke.
The GC guys are: Fuglsang, Kelderman and Ten Dam (one for each tour).
Their climbing aids are guys like Izagirre, Intxausti, Nieve, Kangert, Gesink.
The cobble guys are Boom, Stannard, Keukeleire.
The sprint guys might look a bit OP, it's because at PCM 2014 I seem to mess up a loooot more sprints than 2013. At least for me, it is a bit more difficult to win sprints in 2014. So, I took quite a few good sprinters in order to practice: Kristoff, Degenkolb, Goss, Viviani, Swift, Haussler.
There's a general career discussion for this, I think
Though your depth might be a bit too high, really a lot of 76+ climbers, too mich if your leader is 78.
I played conti team long time ago so please correct me if I'm wrong but sponsor "calculating" their expectations base on your team "power" in relations to the other conti teams, right? So, when my sponsors want TOP3 in some spring mountain 2.1 tour then they dont care that Nibali, Contador, Froome, Porte and Uran are on the startlist and I have literally NO CHANCE to meet their expectations, right?

I might be able to help a bit, I enjoy playing Custom Teams the most , as I want to play with riders I like and since I go in for Realism 100 % , I always end up with a descent team , that isn't too strong , but then again not that weak.
So the first thing toward realism is how big your sponsor is, so I have made an example of the danish company CSC , which every cycling fan will know about and the secondary sponsor is Orbea. CSC is known for it's history in Cycling, so getting bigger names won't be a problem.
So it's an Danish - Spanish team, which will have to be good in almost every terrain ( except Cobbles ) and will have a good chance in getting an invitation for the Vuelta. They will probably target Stage Races in both Spain and the Nothern part of Europe.
Now I want a team with 3 captains, one for each their category. Each captain usually have around 2 Lieutenants that they prefer racing with. So that is 9 riders, then as a minimum I would want at least 3 sprinters on the team, and one of these will have to be a Captain, in this case.
And with Sprinters mentioned, they need a strong leadout in order to be able to participate against the others, so my goal is to have 4 of these riders, which monthly can shift around the stage races as you please them to. The rest will be helpers, breakaway specialists and bottle catchers.
Captains
Captains is usually those with the most experience , and they are the strongest riders in their category of the team. They put good faith in their team and especially their Lieutenants , which is usually almost as good, but then again not quite.
First captain that I want is an overall leader, that can win stage races and is still descent in time trials. I chose Daniel Navarro, former of Cofidis and an excellent rider, which already were in the Pro Continental Tour. He has a lot of experience and can easily fulfill our goals.
Next captain is a sprinter, and I'm looking for a strong one, that is still left out with a small role of his team, my choice is Francisco Ventoso. Because he wants to be able to ride for himself on a smaller team and because he is pretty strong upward, and he will be an overall leader for the team.
The last spot is either for a younger one, that have excelled at an young age or it would be one with as much experience as the previous choices. I want this one to be danish and will function as a backup to D.Navarro as he can't be in every race.
I had two choices : M.Cort or C.A Sörensen and I chose the latter because the rest of the team didn't fit Cort's riding style in the end.
The Team
So I could explain further for each role, but I won't. Instead I will post the rest of the team and explain the goals of the team :
The main goal is to get a wildcard for the Vuelta, and we have good chances of getting that. Ventoso got a descent leadout available. Navarro got a strong line of helpers in the mountains and we have plenty of young talents (2 future great , 2 promising and 1 Worth Watching) + some great helpers in general.
Hope I have helped a bit and I may consider trying this team out

How you can get a secondary sponsor at the start with a custum team?
You can't in the new game, but it was just as the team is called CSC - Orbea , which is two different companies. CSC is a danish company and Orbea a spanish.
So I consider Orbea my second sponsor.
The only way that you really can make your "second sponsor" to have some sort of responsibility, is by editing in the database, where you can choose 60 % to be from Denmark and 40 % from Spain as a minimum ( example ). You can also choose where you want to have your target races, sorted by region in the Dyn_Team tab Edited by sgdanny on 29-08-2014 08:33
