What if the world champion in cycling was decided the same way as in boxing?
Every time the current WC raced, the winner of that race would be the new world champion. I found this a fun project and decided to try to find out who would be the reigning champion.
In theory you could start for the first bikerace in history and trace the line, but there a quite a lot of obstacles on the way. Which races to count, missing results list and doped riders is perhaps the biggest challenges.
So for now I started at the first WT race this season: Tour Down Under.
22 riders have had the jersey this season.
The current wearer is Alejandro Valverde after San Sebastian.
You find all the names and more on www.bindajersey.com
You can also follow on twitter: www.twitter.com/b...
The name Binda Jersey is after the first rider to wear the Rainbow jersey, Alfredo Binda who won the 1927 World Championship |

Perhaps you could give an overview of who wore the WC-jersey until now. One thing I don't know is how you decide if there's a GC. Do stage wins also count or is only the GC-victory important?

Hi, u can find the past wearers under "the Binda Jersey 2014"
https://www.bindaj...page_id=17
Actually I'm not counting GCs or TTs. Since GCs is not an acutal race, and TTs got their own WC (and hopefully also soon their own Binda Jersey...)
You'll find all the details under "The Rules"

Interesting idea! Would be cool if you added number of days a rider has carried it. |

Well, I actually thought about calendar days, but it could be too much work really, so race days could be good as well. |

It's actually not to hard to do calender days, but I'll have to figure out how to make it look good (and easy to keep updated...
perhaps a top 5 "most days" would do?
racedays would be the same as number of wins -1
I've added the top 5 to the bottom of the stats page:

First off, great idea. Really like it.
Personally though, I would exclude stages in a stage race though, and instead go for the General Classification & One-Day Races. Basically, anything were people actively and surely want to go for the win in total.
In stages themselves, there's too much fluctuation. Also, GC riders race under different "conditions" than, let's say, a sprinter. They focus on the GC win, the sprinter more so on the stage win. I guess, stages (for me in this context) are like the qualifications for a cyclist, while the GC is the fight itself. Lastly, it cancels out a bit the randomness since a GC win or One-Day race win (at least in my opinion) reflects more so on the quality of a rider than some stage win (eg breakaway win, though of course that's an admirable quality of a rider too).
It'd be weird if Nibali constantly would have got the World Champion jersey, just to get it snatched away from Kittel on the Champs for example.

Thank you! Nice to see that the jersey gets discussed
Initally I gave the GC winner the jersey, but I changed my mind for several reasons:
- One reason was that the list quickly got dominated by stage races, and almost none one day races (just 4 vs 9 now) Thats because many of the GC winners rides few races, and almost just stage races.
- Secondly I thought that just counting stages are what resembles the boxing title matches closest. Its the strongest that day which gets the jersey.
- Third GC may have a TT in it, and I dont count TTs as part of the jersey (plan to make a TT jersey as well)
- And it also gives the underdog some chance to keep the jersey after a stage race - and perhaps bringing the jersey to some smaller races (which in my opinion would be fun)
And for your Nibali vs Kittel case, event though Nibali won the GC, Kittel for me was the just as dominating on many stages.
Finally, this project is purely fun, and in my opinion it would be boring if the jersey always was worn by the biggest names. I want more rides like Simon Geschke to wear it, but without favoring them to much. |

I see your reasoning behind it and thanks for the explanation. It'll be definitely more in flux and surprising on who gets the jersey- Maybe at some point, there can be two WC jerseys, much like heavyweight and lightweight?

Imagine Pozzovivo or Dumoulin wearing heavyweight one. Oh irony.

First Grand Tour for the Binda Jersey soon, will be some heavy changes going on. Tony Martin to leave Vuelta with the jersey I guess.

a 10km TT will probably see an alternate winner, and I'm not even sure if Martin will be in the race, because of World's |

Yes, you're right. Didn't know it was only a 10km long, only knew that there was a TT. Sounds like an epilogue then.

You are aware ITTs don't count and stage 20 therefore will likely be the decider?

Ouch.
Best to ignore everything I write in this thread, silly me. Thanks for the correction.

Looking forward to the Vuelta, will be great to get some new owners of the jersey!
I'll try to update the page as ofte as possible, but I'm afraid i wont be able to update everything each day. At least I'll try to update on twitter each day, and then update the page as often as possible
