So I'm actually a newbie here and this is my first year with PCM. Like it so far but I feel a bit overwhelmed by carrer options. So my questions: How do you play it? do you create a rider calendar all by yourself or just let the ai choose who to ride in various races. Do you sim all the early season prep tours and less important races or you just 3D-play it all? What else pay attention to in career mode?
Both are personal preferences. If you want optimal race selections it's best to do everything manually. If you like racing prep races, do them, but it's not really necessary.
The rider calander i allways tried to put the sponsors objectives; in the rider objectives. so like this you have the best riders doing the races in a good shape.
I allways played the races there are objectives for my sponsors; and i play all the dificult races [climb ones] to put my lider in the top 5
In career mode you have to pay attention to your money.
Depends on the level of your team and also yours ...
1. As a beginner, i would give you the dvice to race the standard calendar for 3 or 6 month to get a feeling of the fitness and rythmus aspect.
2. Normally i take the sponsor goals and fit them to the suitable riders. These riders will get a small team, so you know their strengts and weaks. (depends on your amount of riders). At least i will try to get invitations for races i want to participate (at least WT´s or 2./1.HC)
3, Money is a aspect so its not a fault do release your complete staff at hte beginning. Second year you know your finances and then you can build up a new staff ( and probably a better than the first one)

The way i approached this game for the first time was with trial and error. Just keep on making mistakes, the more you make the quicker you will learn.
For season planning i like Conardo's 3 (4) steps.
What i did was (take a good team with atleast 1 rider for each specialty) Then devide my team into 4 subteams.
1 for Giro (tirreno, Romandie, dauphine, Poland, USA pro)
1 for Tour (P-N, catalunya, Swiss, Sansebastian, Utah or WC andLombardia)
1 for Vuelta (catalunya, Basque, hill classics, Burgos, WC)
1 for Cobbles and hill classics (2nd part of season fill up the vuelta team)
At the beginning of the season your riders need to get in a rythem, so you need to race them a lot. For the 2nd part of the season for each group you only need 1 race (atleast 5 stages) to get them back in rythem.
Don't use the (cheat) trainingCamps for upping your stats,
If you feel your riders are too weak for a certain GT, then the recon training camps should be sufficient.
