Reconnecting to an online game

Me and a friend is playing an online stage race (TDF), but we have some issues with the game crashing from time to time (as i've seen a lot of other people have too). But it is possible to reconnect to a stage in progress if someone is disconnected? Or do we have to wait for the stage to finish, and then he can rejoin the next stage?
