Chapter 1 - American Memorial
Yet another cold winther in North Yankton, thought I would be used to it by now, I was wrong. As I walked through the cold and snowcovered town I noticed a father stopping by the local bookshop with his son, not older than 7 I think, to have a look through the windows. ''Daddy who is that'' asked the son and pointed out a book in the windows. ''Thats Duke Daniels, or ''The Demolisher'' as he was called back in the days, he was a very famous cyclist.'' The father replied, before they started walking again. I turned to the window and admired the book, ''The Demolisher'', perhaps the greatest cyclist who had ever lived, Duke Daniels, me.

It was never the plan to become a cyclist, it was in the family, and I guess so was I, though my father never reached professional level i had big expectations for my career back then. I did not only reach my dreams, I climbed past them and put milestone after milestone behind me. How it all started you ask? Well allow me to explain it to you...

Chapter 2 - A Sharp signing
Before the press conference started I felt extremly nervous, with good reason. Signing a UCI ProTeam at the age of 19, it was incredible. Surely I had a couple of good results on the hilly youth races in and around North Yankton, but signing with the perhaps biggest american cycling team? No, it was just to much for my young brain to handle by the time, however the nerves where quickly replaced with disappointment and reality.

As I and the other riders walked in I hit the wall of reality, the media couldnt care less about who I was or my story, their attention was going towards one of the other newcomers, Sebastian Langeveld, who achieved a 7th place in Paris-Roubaix the year before. Sure a fine result, but did that make him a star? No, I was gonna asure that they was gonna regret this, the media, turn me into a joke before the world even saw what my talent could. The press conference changed from an artellery of nerves and butterflies in my stomach, I felt absolutely nothing. I sat there for hours, it felt like days, but then finally Jonathan Vaughters, the Garmin-Sharp manager, ended the conference and we could head home, some more happy than others, as you can imagine.

When I came home i got a phonecall, against my own will I picked it up and managed to spit a ''Hello'' out to the caller, good thing I dindt pass that call, because...

Chapter 3 - Other papers
If you have any interest in fashion or atleast clothing brands you have most likely heard of Hugo Boss. Hugo Boss is the perhaps biggest clothing brand in and around Germany, and also one of the biggest in the world overall. Hugo Boss lifted to air in 1924 when Hugo Boss started the clothing company in Metzingen. In its 90 years age it has become, as I said earlier, one of the biggest brands in the world. So why would a representative from Hugo Boss call me?

I couldnt believe the words going through my ears. ''Why of course I would like a sponsorship with your brand'' I answered, and all the concerns from the conference earlier seemed far away. Even after i thought it through for some time after the conversation I couldnt see why the would sign me. ''We have our way in and around sport, we have watched you and we think the deal will be great for both you and us.'' Unbelieveable.

When I entered the Hugo Boss offer to finalise the contract i tried to keep calm and act professional. That was hard when I saw the offer, I dindt even hesitate, looking back on it now it was not the most smart decision to sign without even thinking about the consequences, but I got a sponsorship and thats what mattered at the time, as i was already in debt. A financial giving me 1000$ over a 1-year deal, also they sponsored my clothing. Things were starting to look up for me, finally.

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
