After yesterdays hillier opener, we have the first probable sprint stage today. That said it`s not completely flat with some bumps in the middle part and a hill on the final 20km. But the difficulty is far below the hills on yesterdays stage.
So stage favourites are the fast sprinters Vanderaerden, Drapac or Andriato followed by a longer list of similar strong riders.
The peloton didn`t allow any breakaway until the first sprint and so it`s Drapac taking the 6 points.
Behind him nobody shows any interest and Gudsell and Poulhies pass the line next while working at the front.
So Vontobel is no longer going for their no.1 sprinter here after Wyss conquered the yellow jersey.
Just a little bit later 4 riders attacked and created a gap.
Petrus
Chamorro
Carapaz
Grau
All four have lost time on the opener and are +4'52 already.
4 sprinter teams are seen at the front. Fletcher (Vanderaerden), Bank of Ireland (Drapac), Africa (Rangel) and Repsol (Andriato) all have possible winners today and so it`s logical to see them chasing the break.
Grau is the strongest at the KoM ahead of Chamorro and Petrus. But no matter what young Kudus will keep his jersey for at least another day.
The previous sprint was won by Carapaz ahead of Petrus and Chamorro but actually they just crossed the line without any interest.
For a long time it was a game between the breakaway and the peloton as they did not want to catch them too early.
Now with only 8km to go it almost looks like a surprise as the gap still shows a bit under 1min, which could be enough.
All 4 riders still working together very well.
3,7km left and still a gap to the guys in front when two trains are forming. Of the 4 working teams only Africa and Bank of Ireland without one. And second surely the stronger one as Rangel is already losing his first leadout and only has Day ahead of him.
Harrison Hawkins Day Drapac Rangel Uugunbayar Andriato Redecker Dupont Poulhies Haedo Lang Wyss Avery Kolobnev Sutton Tiernan-Locke Vanderaerden Caethoven
2km and the breakaway riders are caught. What a bad luck for them.
Also Tyler Day with a brilliant leadout moving past the BoI train.
Behind them already Andriato, who found the perfect wheel it seems.
Also Uugunbayar and Dupont in a nice position.
Rangel going the long sprint with 1,7km to go!
Drapac still having Hawkins ahead.
Also the group behind around Sutton, Vanderaerden and Caethoven was able to come closer again.
1300m and Rangel still in front. But Drapac also in the wind now as he left his leadout.
Only Uugunbayar can follow while Andriato and Dupoint have a small gap.
Rangel really looking good today as Drapac struggles to close the gap. As the finish here is slightly uphill on small percentages, this surely comes into favour of first one.
Uugunbayar in third position now ahead of Sutton and Caethoven, while Vanderaerden must be disappointed as he drops back.
On the left we have Andriato, Dupont, Haedo and now also Selig and Golas, who weren`t mentioned earlier due to their bad positioning.
Drapac drops back while Rangel still has that gap. And remember that he started his sprint early!
Uugunbayer, Drapac, Dupont, Andriato, Caethoven, Golas and Selig fight for the spots behind.
Also the yellow jersey of Wyss is coming fast from behind.
But it`s Rangel taking the stage and seeing his sprint today, he surely was the strongest by far! Great win for him and the team.
Andriato and Dupont in the end take the remaining podium spots in that order as they outsprint a strong Golas and Selig, who both had a great last 500m.
Uugunbayer lost a bit and comes in 6th ahead of Wyss and Caethoven.
Drapac as 9th surely disappointed but the small uphill sections did hurt him the most I guess.
Haedo as 10th ahead of his team mate Kolobnev completing a good team result with 4 in the top11, but no podium though.
Sutton 12th and Vanderaerden 22nd surely the biggest disappointments of the day.
GC wise no changes as Wyss keeps the lead.
