Final, 4th stage of Volta ao Algarve 2014 is 34 kilometers long Indivudal Time Trial that is most likely going to mix things up a bit in GC. With one big hill in the middle, it's definitely not going to be an easy ITT. Hilly timetrialists surely has a chance here, but with more than 20 kilometers of flat road, classic-flat tt-ists cannot be forgotten too.
As the last one in GC, Ian Stannard was the first one to start. He clearly is the best flat- time trialists on the list, but he's pretty bad in hills and that could make him problem. However, he finished his ride with not that impressive 52'46" time. He also was the only rider from his team that performed well, as the next guy was on 60th position at the end of the day.
Renang was the next guy to start and yet another good TTist. His ride was awful and he looked pretty bad whole day. He finished with 32" seconds behind Stannard. However, his two teammates, Taciak and Imhof had a pretty solid ride and they both surprised today finishing in front of Renang.
Risa - Ergon, however, was one of the positive surprises today. At the end of the day, they had 3 guys in Top 15 which can be definitely considered as a success for this team. Walker was the best one of these 3 guys, as he finished in front of Haas & Lindgren. He also outbeaten Stannards time by huge 47" seconds.
Cruz and generally team Dell - 361 were the ones that underperformed so far in this race, so they desperately needed a good result in this TT. Freddy finished his ride with 7" seconds of advantage over Stannard, while one of the surprises today was Lewis who finished on shared 23rd position.
Four guys in Top 50 for Team TomTom which wasn't a big surprise. Due to illness or whatever made him drop, Duggan was one of the guys that started early too. He set one great time (52'03" ) that only 7 guys managed to beat at the end. One of them was his teammate, Elijzen (more to come).
Guys of Fletcher weren't completely anonymnous today, too! 5 guys in Top 50 for them there, with all Roulston/Sutherland/Vink finishing in Top 21. They missed Top 10, but with nice 52'33" time, they got 13th place. Can't say this was awful day for them.
Another team that surprised today was Euskaltel Bavaria. Althought they already got a pretty decent result by Moinard in last stage, it wasn't expected from them to have 4 guys in Top 50 and two of them in 20. Fernandez had a pretty good day, as he finished on solid 17th place at the end, having 52'35" time.
Bonsucro guys justified the name of probably the best time trialists here and scored some great points for their team. Nicacio was the best of them, as he managed to finish 4th at the end, leaving his teammates Paulinho, Oyarzun, Broco, Melo, Oyakua all behind him (and in Top50). Really, really good result in this ITT for Brazilian team!
Velits and Barta, as well as whole Team Ameriabank-Novatek showed some class today. The two guys finished as 9th and 13th at the end, while finishing only behind Duggan at that point. Their gaps were 9 and 21 seconds. Solid, very solid.
Other than these guys/teams above, nothing spectacular happened before first 50 riders in GC. Haga was the guy that was the biggest surprise today, as he managed to finish his ride with absolutely insane 51'29" time. He finished in front of all guys that started until that point and it all looked like he'll be in front of rest at the end of the day, too. Quite good result for Chiquita after being very unlucky in first 2 stages.
The guy that was expected to get a good time, Elijzen justfied the name of one of the favourites here and managed to get a same time as Haga. That was waaaaay better than everyone else that started until that point. As there was no real TTist in Top 10, everyone started to think that these guys are might the winners of this ITT.
After that, nobody surprised and most of the riders done pretty much what everyone expected from them. Even no one from 6th to 10th position managed to get a good result, so the fight was now on. Hollenstein was considered as one of the top favourites, as he's awesome in both time-trialing and as a puncheur and he definitely justified his name. At the end of his ride, he managed to finish 19" seconds behind 2 provisional leaders, which secured him Top 5 place in GC, at the end.
Moinard did nothing impressive, so Marentes was next one. Once again, quite solid TTer and great puncheur, which once again produced good result. 10th provisional and 11th final time for him, as he finished 52" seconds behind Haga/Elijzen and 33" behind Hollenstein.
Haas was the next one and the last rider before Mendes/Geschke duo. Really solid ride for this Australian rider, which in combination with yesterdays good performance gave him a solid final GC result. He finished as 14th with 57" behind leading duo, who, at that point, was almost a sure winner of this race.
It was now or never for Mendes to win his home-race. Great, absolutely great result for him after one very focused and solid ride. Even despite he isn't a classic TT rider, he managed to finish "only" 31" seconds (as 6th) behind leading duo and to secure at least final GC podium, if not the win.
Only Geschke left now! After 2 great wins, after one great hilly stage for this German, it was final time to prove that he's worth a GC win. It was, but he failed. After one really disappointing ride from him, he finished 2'22" down on 81st place, behind winner duo Elijzen/Haga. He certainly could do better, but no one has any right to blame him. Great race for him and the team!
He definitely lost the GC win now, but who got it? Let's take a look on the Overall results of VaoA 2014.
