Tour de Beauce - stage 4
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a0-parcours_zps69bb4213.jpg

The race of truth awaits as the calculators are switched on as the riders go off one by one to take in turns to ride round this 21km mainly flat route - perhaps not in keeping with this lumpy Tour de Beauce in general.

Before we get to the GC contenders we have a number of low down on GC testers who are looking for a high stage placing.

Vassdal (Risa) is our earliest leader.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a1_zpsda0b0453.jpg

However is is beaten by Euskatel Bavaria's Adamou.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a2_zpsc298bd1c.jpg

These two set times of 32.18 and 32.12 respectively. They are not quite stage win contenders and are unlike Vontabel's big TT star Schar who does indeed set a new best.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a3_zps240e49d0.jpg

It is a disappointing time though of 'just' 32.09 and considering how close that is to the relatively modest Adamou it is possibly beatable by later starters.

In fact it is beaten before we get to the big GC contenders - Zabalo (Nutresa) drops the new best down to 32.03.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a4_zpsc7cbb580.jpg

It is a cracking time and here is the stage timings situation before we get to our top 25 or so on GC.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/timecheck_zps612068fc.jpg

So onto the Gc contenders - we had five really decent testers who were places in the the Dyball (Wounded Warrior) led group yesterday. Who are all at 3.29 to the race leader Bugge (Risa)

First Bochmann (Carlsberg) who rode steadily up yesterdays tough climb.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a6_zps3493521c.jpg

Nutresa have the current stage leader and two big GC shouts in Soto Periera...

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a7_zpse36cbdca.jpg

... and Fonte who tried to do something spectacular yesterday but didn't have the legs to go with those who broke clear.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a8_zps69c4aae4.jpg

We also have the diesal engine himself Ben Dyball (Wounder Warrior) no acceleration from him yesterday just steady strong climbing.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a9_zps4c48659c.jpg

Also we have Schars more favoured GC teammate Montaguti (Vontabel)

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a10_zps0687b6d9.jpg

One of these five will be our clubhouse GC leader for now, here are the fab fives times:

Lasse BøchmanTeam Carlsberg - Danske Bank31.54
Cesar Andre FonteGrupo Nutresa32.01
Matteo MontagutiTeam Vontobel32.04
Benjamin DyballWounded Warrior Racing32.04
Jorge Adelbo Soto PereiraBonsucro32.35

Bochman and Fonte having good days eclipsing Zabalo for the stage lead, it seems the GC guys have had the best of the conditions or are perhaps extra motivated for the stages.

Next name watched on course is De Greef (Lierse) who had 31 seconds on Bochman and the others before the TT started today.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a11_zps41a8db75.jpg

He produces a solid ride of 32.06, slower than four of the previous men but only 12 seconds slower than the fastest Bochman and enough to take the new provisional lead. Rodas (In and Out) drops behind Bochman, Fonte, Montaguti and Dyball on GC but his teammate Gaimon who finishes 15 seconds slower than De Greef only loses his place to the Belgian.

However Rosskopf (Dell) is setting the course alight.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a12_zps45b20cfd.jpg

Having matched Bochman at all the checks he then manages to put time into the Carlsberg man and finishes with a new stage best time of 31.46. A brilliant time from the American who is having a sparkling race. Can this put pressure on those ahead of him?

Certainly Moreno (TomTom) who slips back on GC behind De Greef splitting him and Gaimon - Castano who got better as yesterdays climb wore on is a better chrono man.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a13_zpsbb2bb063.jpg

But his time is 38 seconds slower than Rosskopf and he slips 17 seconds behind the American. Still he is good enough for provisional GC second before our last two riders.

So our top two on GC, not the best testers but with good advantages of 1.31 and 2.29 on Rosskopf from yesterdays climb and bonuses.

Pourseyedi (Siam) has quite a battle.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a14_zps5ef353b3.jpg

Bugge (Risa) should probably hold unless he badly misjudges his efforts.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a15_zpsafae6e42.jpg

Bugge loses time all the way down the course and rounds the final corner giving his all.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a16_zps0ec7d197.jpg

In the end he concedes 1.19 to Rosskopf just over half his lead is wiped out. Pooreseyedi also holds out, his 20 seconds gained on stage one proving valuable here as he loses 1.22 of his 1.31 on Rosskopf.

Rosskopf can be proud of his efforts today though winning the stage convincingly over Bochman (who moves to GC 8th).
