The Mont Megantic stage arrives with the big hilltop finish following another lumpy run across these Canadian roads. Plenty of home cheer yesterday as Veilluex took the stage and the leaders jersey.
This really is the day for riders who have ambitions on GC to show themselves ahead of tomorrows time trial. The testers need to be put to the sword.
Morning break:
Tatarinov
Semple
Carter Jones
Tatarinov dominates the early prize points winning both sprints and the 3rd category climbs, however Semple finishes second at all of them and goes into the outright KoM lead.
Azteca - NBCSN and In-n-Out Racing Powered by Auchan control things behind.
Tatarinov also wins the later second category climb with Semple only taking 3rd this time with Jones in second.
It means Semple still takes the provisional mountains lead with 22 points will hold this now through to stage 5 which is a worthwhile performance by him. Tatarinov though moves up to 16 points and Jones 10 and both should have a chance of scoring points in the final KoM standings now.
The breaks chances of stage win are very low though with the gap under two minutes - indeed riders are beginning to get twitchy with Jeannesson attacking on the descent from this final mid stage categorised climb.
The pressure causes some ruptures in the pack with the likes of youth jersey wearer Schachmann in a large aurobus of 61 riders forming off the back of this late climb.
Azteca are keen to make a nice strong tempo today they catch Jeannesson, Jones and Semple.
The gap for Tatarinov who has really been the man of the day so far is 45 seconds with 12.5km to go.
Finally the Azteca and In and Out control relents as this now encourages the finale to begin with attacks coming out of the pack left right and centre.
To start we have Jeannesson again along with Losada and McConvey
The tactic though was really from In and Out and Azteca to draw other teams into controlling Wounded Warrior Racing and Dell - 361° Racing step up to the plate and bring back these three.
Tatarinov still holds out though up front with 15 seconds but the road now starts to ramp up dramitically as Megantic begins in earnest.
In and out are at the head of affairs, can they control the attacks now?
Bugge goes hard as soon as the gradient rises.
Moreno and Gaimon go after him. So much for In and Out control and sensibly they send Gaimon on the attack he needs time before the chrono.
Fonte and Pourseyedi also attempt to bridge. Fonte has a good ability against the clock so this could be key.
It is Bugge that looks the strongest though as no-one can bridge to him, with Pourseyedi the best of the rest chasing behind. Moreno, Gaimon and Fonte are finding this tougher than they thought it seems. Tatarinov of course is now blown and falls back to the pack.
Moreno says shut up legs as he gets out of the saddle again to drop Gaimon and the definately struggling Fonte.
What about everyone else, well De Greef and Rosskopf have diesel engined clear of the pack that is beginning to spread itself all over the mountain.
Parisien is doing super domestique work for race leader Vielleux
It is a case of escape now while you can though with the chrono diesel men looking to come over Parisien as soons as he tires.
Godoy tries with Castano also.
2.5km of this destructive climb to go as Bugge continues to ride with confidence at the head of affairs.
The gaps:
Bugge - - > Pourseyedi at 48 seconds - - > Moreno at 1.11 - - > Gaimon at 1.26 - - - > Rosskopf, Fonte, De Greef, Castano at 1.45 and the pack (including a fallen back Godoy) at 2.12.
Rosskopf impresses here behind as he drops Fonte (who keeps going through bad moments) and pulls Castano, De Greef up to Gaimon.
Fonte then is slowly being caught by a large group now being led by Dyball.
Azteca have disappeared from the front as Veilleux struggles to hang on.
Bugge continues to power on, whatever time he can gain here is more he has to defend tomorrow over the likes of Rosskopf who is looking like his main GC challenger.
Indeed Rosskopf is now dropping Gaimon and De Greef with Moreno and Pourseyedi next on his radar, this is a good solid climb from the American.
Also doing a diesel job is Dyball who is hauling up a large group of 18 other riders.
The names:
Godoy, Soto Pereira, Losada
Rodas, Di Gregerio, Kern
Mate, Ghyllebert
Montaguti
Fonte
Jeanesson
Parisien
Bochmann
Tiernan Locke
Olsson
Safarzadeh
Sarabia
Jumebekov
There are a few good chrono guys in there like Montaguti, Fonte and Bochmann.
But they all have to ride amazingly to bring back Bugge tomorrow who takes a dominant stage win
Pourseyedi has been quietly climbing up in second place, not a stage win today but another impressive climb by the Iranian.
Castano manages to sprint awaay from Rosskopf and past Moreno to third place, these two mixing their mountains and hill skills well here.
Rosskopf though is fifth and rode really well also today.
Gaimon and De Greef maintain a gap on the pack also, not quite what Gaimon probably had in mind when he attacked at the bottom.
Dyball has ridden determinedly today, has he burnt some of his chrono matches for tomorrow though?
