Volta ao Algarve - Stage 2
admirschleck
The second stage of Algarve is most probably the last one with possibility of mass-sprint finish, but it is in the same time very tough stage. Few steep and big hills on start, as well as few speed bumps later should make some problems for classic sprinters and should favourise the guys that were good yesterday - hilly sprinters. But, everything can happen so bring on the report!

i.imgur.com/tFhJFIv.png

No problems for breakaway today, as 3 guys attacks once again and creates a breakaway of the day group. This time, it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rubiano Chavez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo who attacked.

The result on all checkpoints was the same today, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo winning all KoM's and sprints in front of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rubiano Chavez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali who finished as 2nd and 3rd. No fight for these checkpoint points which was pretty interesting.

Once all checkpoints passed, race entered the boring mode once again. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik, as the lace leader alongside i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png BoI and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Vontobel once again controlled the race. No drops on first half of stage which was interesting. But still, alot of short bumpy hills that can make problems to sprinters until the end.

And just as it was predicted, some guys fell off the peloton after the circuit/lap race started in Lagoa city. The trio of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png TomTom - Duggan/Schoonbroodt and Van Ooijen, as well as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Stannard, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Stroetinga i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Renang, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Cruz and few others were in the group the dropped. Pretty bad day for TomTom, as these guys above never made it back to the peloton.

However, last 20 kilometers arrived quickly. Exactly at 20km to go, the BOTD group had less than a minute of advantage and peloton could finally see them. It was getting more and more clear that this will once again finish in mass sprint of peloton.

12 kilometers after, 8 kilometers to go, peloton finally caught 3 breakaway guys. Such a brave rides from them, but there was no way to escape. They can now only hope for good sprint from their leaders here.

Almost immediately after that, the first trains were created. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca were once again on the very top of peloton and unlike on first stage, the clasic trains were now created. This is how it looked in that moment, around 5 kilometers to go:

Alot of other sprinters back behind tho. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Arango, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Roulston/Haller/Meyer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schuler/Hollenstein, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes were all there, too.

Soon, after 2 kilometers, at exactly 3 kilometers to go, this was the situation. Still, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca remained on the top of the peloton as 2 only team-organised trains. Some guys, such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Haller came out of nowhere and made the situation look like this:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Boivin i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Milan

www.dodaj.rs/f/2K/Ov/PVW5cHm/1/2014-05-21-123614-greens.jpg

Back behind, big mess once again. Some new guys, such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Brammeier, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Paulinho/Borges, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Pires, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Iglinski, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Friedman were there, as well as some guys that were on the same positions 2 kilometers ago, such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Roulston/Haller/Meyer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Schuler/Hollenstein, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mendes.

www.dodaj.rs/f/13/FM/2sF0rOEl/2014-05-21-123627-greens.jpg

2 kilometers to go now and the holes appears between 2 trains. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca's ones has huge problems and falls behind a bit taking down all the guys that were on their wheels, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramontis launches sprint for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Geschke. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Lang is still on Geschke's wheel, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Arango are trying to catch up with the guys above.

www.dodaj.rs/f/2J/Az/3M34Fuo3/2014-05-21-123655-greens.jpg

Big mess and chaos behind with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Azteca's train having problems . i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hawkins gets out of their wheels and is now going on his own, which isn't the smartest idea, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Aistrup takes the wheel of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar and is trying to be patient there.

www.dodaj.rs/f/3W/ao/2w1GfULZ/2014-05-21-123709-greens.jpg

Even more behind, guys like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Friedman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Haas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Bogues are having problems to find the perfect wheel, so they just tries to stay behind someone until the final sprint launches. Which is going to be very soon!

www.dodaj.rs/f/1y/Eo/48Erg7vZ/2014-05-21-123743-greens.jpg

Meanwhile, in the front of peloton, guys slightly passes under 1km to go banner. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Geschke and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Lang launches the sprint so strong they even made big, big advantage. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Aistrup somehow found the way to pass and he's the third at the moment. Not much left, no space for any tactics, just pure strength.

www.dodaj.rs/f/3K/ar/MckFJQU/2014-05-21-123807-greens.jpg

Behind, despite all problems, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar finds a way to get to the front and is now sprinting. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Arango, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Haller, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Borgues and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hawkins are also there, but we're not sure how much energy they have in their tanks, considering that they had to accelerate quickly after all of the mess that happened before.

www.dodaj.rs/f/1X/5q/1BZ8tpp5/2014-05-21-123821-greens.jpg

Soon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Geschke and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Lang made even a bigger advantage and it was 100% clear that one of them was going to win this, but which one? 300 meters to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Lang gets out of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Geschke's wheel and it's now or never. It will be close!

www.dodaj.rs/f/3e/UI/xnKmFHE/2014-05-21-123835-greens.jpg

But he couldn't do anything, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Geschke kept a great pace once again and took the 2nd win in a row here. What a Tour of Algarve for him and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik! Just great! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Lang once again had to satisfy himself with the podium place. They almost got a new time on guys behind.

www.dodaj.rs/f/1B/m9/2f2yzoDB/2014-05-21-123845-greens.jpg

Although he lost a bit of advantage, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Aistrup managed to keep his position and get a last podium place. Great result for him and his team aswell, after a pretty bad start of the season. He finished in front of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vtb.png Hollenstein (4th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Borgues (5th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar (6th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramontis (7th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Haas (8th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez (9th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Marentes (10th) and the rest of the peloton.

www.dodaj.rs/f/1S/C/1GNJr1YY/2014-05-21-123935-greens.jpg

Others just took it easily and only the guys that were named before in report (12 of them) lost the time at the end.
