The second stage of Algarve is most probably the last one with possibility of mass-sprint finish, but it is in the same time very tough stage. Few steep and big hills on start, as well as few speed bumps later should make some problems for classic sprinters and should favourise the guys that were good yesterday - hilly sprinters. But, everything can happen so bring on the report!
No problems for breakaway today, as 3 guys attacks once again and creates a breakaway of the day group. This time, it's Bajadali, Rubiano Chavez and Arredondo who attacked.
The result on all checkpoints was the same today, with Arredondo winning all KoM's and sprints in front of Rubiano Chavez and Bajadali who finished as 2nd and 3rd. No fight for these checkpoint points which was pretty interesting.
Once all checkpoints passed, race entered the boring mode once again. Evonik, as the lace leader alongside BoI and Vontobel once again controlled the race. No drops on first half of stage which was interesting. But still, alot of short bumpy hills that can make problems to sprinters until the end.
And just as it was predicted, some guys fell off the peloton after the circuit/lap race started in Lagoa city. The trio of TomTom - Duggan/Schoonbroodt and Van Ooijen, as well as Stannard, Stroetinga Renang, Cruz and few others were in the group the dropped. Pretty bad day for TomTom, as these guys above never made it back to the peloton.
However, last 20 kilometers arrived quickly. Exactly at 20km to go, the BOTD group had less than a minute of advantage and peloton could finally see them. It was getting more and more clear that this will once again finish in mass sprint of peloton.
12 kilometers after, 8 kilometers to go, peloton finally caught 3 breakaway guys. Such a brave rides from them, but there was no way to escape. They can now only hope for good sprint from their leaders here.
Almost immediately after that, the first trains were created. Evonik and Azteca were once again on the very top of peloton and unlike on first stage, the clasic trains were now created. This is how it looked in that moment, around 5 kilometers to go:
Boivin Milan Saramontis Crespo Geschke Farrar Lang Hawkins Lilholt Aistrup
Alot of other sprinters back behind tho. Arango, Roulston/Haller/Meyer, Schuler/Hollenstein, Mendes were all there, too.
Soon, after 2 kilometers, at exactly 3 kilometers to go, this was the situation. Still, Evonik and Azteca remained on the top of the peloton as 2 only team-organised trains. Some guys, such as Fernandez and Haller came out of nowhere and made the situation look like this:
Boivin Milan Saramontis Crespo Geschke Farrar Lang Hawkins Arango Fernandez Aistrup Haller
Back behind, big mess once again. Some new guys, such as Brammeier, Paulinho/Borges, Pires, Iglinski, Friedman were there, as well as some guys that were on the same positions 2 kilometers ago, such as Roulston/Haller/Meyer, Schuler/Hollenstein, Mendes.
2 kilometers to go now and the holes appears between 2 trains. Azteca's ones has huge problems and falls behind a bit taking down all the guys that were on their wheels, while Saramontis launches sprint for Geschke. Lang is still on Geschke's wheel, while Fernandez and Arango are trying to catch up with the guys above.
Big mess and chaos behind with Azteca's train having problems . Hawkins gets out of their wheels and is now going on his own, which isn't the smartest idea, while Aistrup takes the wheel of Farrar and is trying to be patient there.
Even more behind, guys like Friedman, Haas, Bogues are having problems to find the perfect wheel, so they just tries to stay behind someone until the final sprint launches. Which is going to be very soon!
Meanwhile, in the front of peloton, guys slightly passes under 1km to go banner. Geschke and Lang launches the sprint so strong they even made big, big advantage. Aistrup somehow found the way to pass and he's the third at the moment. Not much left, no space for any tactics, just pure strength.
Behind, despite all problems, Farrar finds a way to get to the front and is now sprinting. Fernandez, Arango, Haller, Borgues and Hawkins are also there, but we're not sure how much energy they have in their tanks, considering that they had to accelerate quickly after all of the mess that happened before.
Soon, Geschke and Lang made even a bigger advantage and it was 100% clear that one of them was going to win this, but which one? 300 meters to go, Lang gets out of Geschke's wheel and it's now or never. It will be close!
But he couldn't do anything, as Geschke kept a great pace once again and took the 2nd win in a row here. What a Tour of Algarve for him and Evonik! Just great! Lang once again had to satisfy himself with the podium place. They almost got a new time on guys behind.
Although he lost a bit of advantage, Aistrup managed to keep his position and get a last podium place. Great result for him and his team aswell, after a pretty bad start of the season. He finished in front of Hollenstein (4th), Borgues (5th), Farrar (6th), Saramontis (7th), Haas (8th), Fernandez (9th), Marentes (10th) and the rest of the peloton.
Others just took it easily and only the guys that were named before in report (12 of them) lost the time at the end.
