The first stage of this years Tour of Algarve is the longest one actually and one of the two flat stages. It is rated as flat, but it can be hardly said that it is flat. Huge amount of small bumpy hills that may favourite the breakaway. If breakaway fails to win this, then hilly-sprinters are definitely in big advantage over classic, pan-flat terrain sprinters. Everything depends on positioning.
The 2 sprint checkpoints were early in the race and that meant the early creation of breakaway group. It indeed was like that, as 4 guys: Umberkov, Wu, Lebris and Ochoa attacked just as the guys got out of Fano city.
The result on both sprint checkpoints was the same. Umberkov won twice, in front of Lebris and Ochoa. Wu missed the sprint-points, but he easily got the only KoM pass today and secured the polka-dot jersey for tomorrow.
Peloton never let the breakaway group get big advantage, thanks to
Vontobel, BoI and Evonik who were the teams that chased the most today. They clearly had some win plans!
You'd expect the race to be passive until the last few kilometers, but it wasn't the case here! Jorgensen was the first one to have problems. He actually dropped on KoM hill, but thanks to his mates, he got back in the peloton.
The same situation happened to Renang and Stannard , who were one of the guys with highest GC and TT chances. I guess they'll just focus on GC now. But, they weren't the only ones, as both Friedman and Stroetinga fell of the peloton and never came back. Just as the reminder, they're 2 best Chiquita sprinters here. What a sad day for this minion team.
It was luckily the end of this chaos and peloton calmed a bit. Riders were at around 60 kilometers at that point and basically nothing happenned in next 40. At 20 kilometers to go, peloton still had the gap around a minute. It looked like it's going to be close.
Riders in both groups continued riding strong. 15 next kilometers, before 5km-to go banner could be described with one sentence "Peloton slightly reducing the gap". 5 kilometers to go, riders are about to enter the city of Albufeira where the finish is and there is almost no gap now. It all smells like a mass, sprint finish.
2 kilometers to go and peloton finally caught the BOTD group. Great fight for them it was, but it just wasn't enough. No big trains created behind, except Evonik's one. Looks like they're all in for Geschke today!
And it didn't just look like it, but it was like that. The first train and clearly the best-prepared one was Geschke's train. He was on wheels of his 2 teammates, Boivin and Saramontis. Hawkins and Lang were the only 2 guys following it. It looked like the best option to follow this one at that moment. On another side, just behind them, Fletcher created 3 riders train with Roulston, Haller and Meyer in it.
Big mess behind them, as most of the riders still couldn't find the perfect wheel to follow. Calsberg trio Aistrup/Andersen/Sabatini, Iglinski, Fernandez, Farrar, Arango, Milan... were all a bit behind at one kilometer to go.
We soon arrived to the point where Geschke got out of his teammate's, Saramontis' wheel and started sprinting himself. He looked so dominant and it looked like no one could follow his great, great pace.
Meanwhile, behind him, the real fight for 2nd position Hawkins and Lang were close to each other and had a bit of advantage over others. Azteca's Farrar and Milan duo were accelerating alongside Arango, Fernandez and Andersen, while Fletcher's train failing strongly, with only Roulston sprinting and Meyer being passive in last few hundred of meters.
Big sprint chaos behind. Iglinski, Meyer, Schuler, Arango, Hollenstein, Aistrup sprinted behind, with the rest of the guys just trying to catch up with the high pace.
Meanwhile, on the top of the race Geschke was the first to cross the finish line! Such a great result for both him and the team. Definitely not one of the favourites here, but with a great teamwork, it paid off! He, for some reason, didn't raise his hands to fully celebrate it.
However, the fight behind, for 2nd, 3rd and the rest Top 10 places was much, much better and more exciting. Andersen, Farrar and Milan accelerated and re-gained the slight gap they had to Hawkins and Lang and it was really, really close at the end. Photo-finish had to decide the 2nd and 3rd for today and luckily for blue-teams, Lang got 2nd, while Hawkins finished as 3rd. Farrar, Milan and Andersen were the guys that shared positions from 4 to 6.
Even more behind, guys such as Marentes, Saramontis, Fernandez, Schuler, Roulston, Ochoa, Hollenstein, Aistrup and Haller had to fill the positions from 8 to 15.
The rest of the peloton took it easy and just made sure to have the same gap. 10 guys finished with the different time compared to pelotons one, which is pretty solid for a stage with profile like this. We'll see what will happen tomorrow!
