The 11km ITT might become the GC deciding stage. It`s not only a fight of the top time trialists Reus, Olman, Ligthart, Tennant, Stannard, Elijzen, Johansson, Wetterhall or Barth against the sprinters ahead with Holloway and Lo Cicero needing a mention of course. Also the time trialists will have to fight each other as the short opening prologue did seperate them by only a few seconds.
Between Reus in 3rd at the moment and Wetterhall in 18th it`s only 11s with all others above being in between. So every second might count.
That said it`s already a 50s gap to Holloway and a 18s gap to Lo Cicero. First is a decent timetrialist for a sprinter, second a good prologue rider. So question is if todays stage is more for the short TT specialists or for the power machines.
Also worth a mention prologue winner Ford, who again is the top favourite here but due to a crash without any GC chance now.
Ford obviously the earliest top time trialist on the road and it`s hardly surprising that we have a new best time, which will last for a long time now.
14'52
Not Reus yet but his team mate Mazur also a specialist.
Pretty good ride by him actually even though he is 27s behind the Aussie. But he did beat others by quite a bit as well. Let`s only have some riders at the end of todays ranking and we have more than 2min seperation! Possible to gain time here.
15'19
Schär next and actually a very similar time trialist than Mazur. Not his best ride in the end it seems as he can`t beat the Polish and is 6s slower.
15'25
Wetterhall the weaker of two Swedbank time trialists. Being 5th at the intermediate 16s behind Ford and behind Mazur, Haga and Khatuntsev as well, this is an okay first half for him. In the end not with the very best as he finishes 2s faster than Schär but behind those riders, that were ahead of him at halftime.
15'23
Tennant had an awful prologue but today he looks far better on his bike, which is good news for his manager.
It`s not enough to beat Ford`s time but being "only" 16s behind could mean a good GC in the end.
15'08
Also his team mate Lagab with a decent ride today being just behind Schär.
Barth might be the rider to save his team in this race. The German with a good performance today beind in provisional 3rd behind Ford and Tennant.
15'12
Johansson coming next and he proves to be the stronger Swedbank rider but he can`t finish on todays podium as he is 2s slower than Barth. Still could be a top10 GC in the end.
15'14
Stannard could deliver huge points here for his CT team. He is one of the strongest riders despite being one division lower normally. And his intermediate time was already great beating Ford by 2s!
And he also beats him in the finish and extends the gap even more. 5s faster in the end! Small disappointment for Oz Cycling I guess. This could also be bad news for the next time trialists. To Reus for example he had a 7s gap in the GC. So pressure is on the Dutch now.
14'47
Similar could be said about Elijzen. That said the Dutch is a bit weaker and can`t beat the Brit. But his result today is slightly disappointing as it might not be enough for a top10 stage result being 8th at the moment with Reus, Olman and Ligthard still to come. Also losing 33s on Stannard is more than expected. Same time as Haga as well, who had a huge ride today. But thanks to the crashes of Ford and Haga this might still be enough for a final top10 actually.
Olman is the teams hope for a good GC result after Ford crashed out. 6th at the moment being 55s behind Holloway. A good 3rd at half time behind Stannard and Ford only.
And it`s also the provisional 3rd in the finish. So hanging on tomorrow could give him a top5 GC.
15'07
5th at the moment is Castaneda. So a sprinter and decent prologue rider but far from a ITT specialist. 27s were already lost at the half and it`s 55s in the end. Only having an advantage of a few seconds will see him dropping in the GC. His team mate Bret though will be ranked higher GC wise with a decent result actually.
Ligthart had a great prologue and together with Holloway it`s probably the strongest GC duo here. 8th only at the half is not that good. Improving one spot in the finish though. But he loses his GC position to Stannard and Olman for sure being in 3rd provisional now still ahead of todays better finisher Tennant, Barth or Johansson.
Reus, Lo Cicero and Holloway still to come though.
15'16
Here is Reus. The last pure time trialist on the road. 7s between Stannard and him at half time where he sits in 3rd!
7s? Yes exactly his advantage on the Brit. This will be a very close fight now until the finish line. Not only Holloway is a threat now. Also the Brit is in the fight for the GC lead.
Lo Cicero is less of a threat.
61st at the sprint being 34s behind Stannard! So his weak ITT skills hurt him a lot today as it`s too long for him.
Can Holloway defend the lead? 45th at the intermediate. 28s lost of his advantage. Close one.
Reus crossing the line and he is not happy. 3rd for him behind Stannard and Ford. 16s behind! So it`s definitely not the GC lead for him as the Brit beats him by quite a bit, which is a small surprise.
Holloway got 60s bonus with his 3 stage wins. In the end those saved his advantage. Again not the best ITT by him being beaten by a few other sprinters. But he is losing 56s! What does this mean?
He has exactly saved 1s of his advantage to defend the GC lead! Perfectly done I guess and now tomorrows stage has to see them defending it again.
Also a small note tsmoha won`t like. Without a crash, Ford would be the GC leader now.
